Buying an ls conversion?
240z72 replied to drummerwhoservesgod's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Indeed. If you do find one have a few people look at it or even see if you can take it to a shop and have them look ot over. If i was going to spend 10+ k on a swap car id make shur it was up to par. Do alot of reading and you will be able to take with you a basic idea of what to look for. -

I dont know if i posted this yet but i weighed the Z. With me in it and about a 7-9gals of fuel. Im at 2680. Im 200lbs of that. I had my friends at the highway patrol weight it. Notten like a man with a badge telling you to rip on it as i leave hahh! And boy i flew outta that place!

Over the weekend i decided to try and settle down the chattering i had with my CLSD. The standard mix of one bottle of friction modifier wasent doing the trick. So i drained the oil and added 4 bottels of friction modifier. And topped it off with some 80-90. Major improvement. Still vibrates a tiny bit but i havent driven it a whole lot. So i think once its good and worked it the clutches its gonna be good to go. If i can stop buying guns for a bit il try to finish my cv axle swap!
-
I honestly dident have it plugged for a good 300 miles and nothing really came out. Remember im not using stock valve covers.

Come to think of it. I had surging at stops sometimes. I just deleted the left side vent. It just vents into the bay and sometimes a bit of oil comes out. Not alot juat like a mist. I drove for about a half hour today. Starting with no smoke at all now. Happy it was an easy fix.

Domzs: Nice man congrats! Good feeling when you get it running. Now you just gotta get it rolling! From the pics i cant tell much besides your running a single fan setup. I went with the dual fan as thats how my harness came. I must say that radiator dose an awsome job of cooling with just one small 12'' fan on. You will like it! As for my issues. I tore into it and replaced the valve stem seals lastnight. Also checked valve guides. Had only 2 that i needed to pull out the dial indicator on and check. All were well in spec. So i reassembled and fired it up. Ran good. Also dissasembled my vent tubes for the valve covers as i had a high idol. With it connected i was idoling at about 1200. I removed them and plugged the intake ports and im at 850. Also was reading that alot of guys do this on their modern cars and run catch cans. I warmed it up and changed the oil. Read that going to a heavier weight oil would help. So i uped it to 10w 30 from 5w 30. oil was nasty. from all the crap like assembly lube and just from being rebuilt. Got it topped off and ran it for about 20 mins. Up to temp I shut it off and let it sit for about 15 20 mins. Bout how long i would leave it off befor i saw smoke on start up. Fired it up and nothing! No smoke at all. I have yet to road test it but as of now it seems like its fixed. Will update after i take it out for a drive. Jim

Mmmmmm bacon..... -
Welcome buddy! First off nice looken car. The interior looks quite well. If you going budget, id get it on its feet and runnen then do nitrous. If you go turbo it will be expensive and you will have to spend alot more money getting it to work right. Where nitrous is basically bolt on. Even supercharging is said to be easier to do then turbo. All up to you. Even stock its gonna tear it up! Heads and a cam makes it even better. I have a stock 5.7 ls1 and its crazy fast! You will love it. Check out peoples build threads for help. SunnyZ has a 5.3 build. Read up on all you can find and piece together what you need to know. Goodluck! Jim

Well an issue arose. Apon a hot start say i drive some where and leave the car for about twenty thirty minutes. When i start it i get a nice size bellow of smoke. Its oil. As im losing it quite badly. Sadface. Did a hot compression test and im solid accross the board at 180. Plugs are not clean and oily. Im thinking i have bad valve stem seals or bent/bad/worn valves. Not shur. Any thoughts? I did replace the stem seals but i messed up and had to switch some as they make one for exhaust and one for intake. Maby i cut them from moving them around. Other then that its a honda eating machine. I got new roters. Nothing fancy. Much better then.sounding like a pile rolling down the street as the old ones would squeek and clap the pads. Will update as i learn more about the smoking issue. Jim

Ya sorry guys its been busy around here. My car is just fine. Sleeping in the garage. Running really good. Had a leaky valve cover gasket. Thats fixed now. Had my exhaust done. Did duals with a h pipe. Not too worried about getting every inch of power out of this thing as its fast enough for me. Sounds great more tame and easy on the ears of others and not so much of a cop tease. I need new roaters. Mine are warped beyond belife. I guess they were bad when i had my friend at ford resurface them. So they were turned down past the mark and the first hard brake warped them bad again haha. Looken to just get some good slotted ones. Maby drilled also but i dont know yet. I hit a pot hole going to sac and i think i ruined my ball joint. Im not shur. I jneed to raise the front and check it out. Havent updated much as i just been busy with christmas and other hobbys.

Ran the car on a 3hr road trip ovrr the weekend. Total of six hours on the road without a single issue. Did get a bit fishey off the line but setteled right down. Car pulls great. My fave is 3rd to forth as i can put the power down quite good for my narrow tires.

Where can i get a ls1 premade harness for my z?
240z72 replied to 77z280's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
1300 is a bit high IMO. Id go with a speartech harness. Best out the for the money. John is the owner. Hes a great guy and will help you out after as well. He has over 30+ years with gm electrical. -
Yes. Bought a lil bottle of it. How much do you need? I put the whole bottel in. I think it was about 4-5 oz. Thats what the directions sad.

Im on the road!! First of all this car is very fast. I did a easy light throttle pull from 3rd to forth and like my pop would say, feels like a flock of quail fly out your azz. Lol... I dident even push it hard at all. Everything is running great. Sorting out my brake issues. I messed up and switched the adjustment screws and was losing adjustment on the rears. Not good! This afternoon Ill take it out and see how it stops. I think it will be up to par. Just cruised around today breaking in the clutch and what not. Having an issues with my rearend chattering. I have the friction modifier in the rear end but i guess it needs time to work in the clutches. Had my friend align the front end today. Kinda cool to be right there and see how its done and actually help. Also ive read that the ls1 tach signal is a 4 cylinder signal. Soooo i went threw hell setting the tach. Well mine reads 8. At 6k on the tach im only at 3k. So i will have to dive under the dash again and switch it back.... fun. I also stopped by the exhaust shop and im going tomorrow or monday to have my system installed. Car is crazy loud under a load. Too loud for my area. Will post more later. If anybody has some tips on stopping that diff from chattering so much let me know. It only happens at low speed turns. Like pulling out out a parking lot.

GM LS-Series Oil Pan Dimensions and Part Numbers
240z72 replied to RaceDriver's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
That C6 pan looks very tempting to use for LS Z swap. As it is about an inch shorter then the camaro pan which I currently have. It has the same part number for the gasket so im guessing it will fit the ls1. If anybody has info on this let me know. Im going to run this by LS1TECH also. I need the clearance!! --Jim -
Damn your making me want to grow my hair out and learn to surf lol. You have another r200? Lol. Nice. If the shipping wasent so bad id ask you to sell me one of the 10 you now have. Im off this weekend so im hopeing to get so road time. Need to calibrate my speedo!
-
Im alive. Haha. The rain has been the worst in a few years. Figures. My Z8 is ready to go. Just waiting for it to dry up. Kinda frustrating....Yea I have coilovers. I have a decent amount of clearance for the oil pan. I might make some kind of bash guard or something to help prevent the pan from damage. In other news I picked up a 260z the other day. Been playing with that. Got it for 750, has the l28 with the good su carbs. now runs great! Just going threw the brakes now. Other then that I haven't done much to the ls1 as its been raining like crazy. Next things id like to do is maby some Dyna-mat and some carpet or floor mats. Interior work. Ill post up as soon as I get rolling.
