I've still got a complete diesel motor in the garage--and a 260Z. I may just try it. Wonder what the compression ratio is on the stock DL motor--for turboing? I've got a couple of T3s out there too.

Got it. So April would be the earliest by this list. What does number 3 mean? (LSD Unites Came With Finned Covers) The three I've had, had finned covers. What's "Unites" Oh! It's supposed to be Units! Okay thanks. About the parking lights, I still wonder if this conincides with a model upgrade for the mid year when they also added the LSD? Would be good for quick eyeballing in the yards.

I posed the question if sanyone here had done one about 1 1/2 yrs ago and people poo-pooed it here. I saw one that Arkansas University did before that.

Earliest meaning that a June 87 car most be the earliest month an LSD could have come in--assuming this wasn't swapped in.
-
I just pulled an LSD from a junkyard that was in an 87 turbo with a build date of 6-87 on the door tag. This must be the earliest of cars to come with one huh? The parking lights in the nose piece had semi-circular sides instead of the mostly rectangular ones in earlier cars. Just wondering if this light difference would be a visual exterior cue to look for prior to seeing under the car.

This thing actually runs. http://www.synergistmusic.com/ferrari312.ram

Could be, but I need stats and specs if anybody has an idea where to get them. Like from a factory manual. Anybody have the diameter of the stock 280 torque convertor? I can measure the diesel one for comparing.
-
Yeah, that's the question I have. Are they high or low stall? Diesels are usually low end torque, but that's where my knowledge ends. Maybe it'd be worse, maybe it'd be the ticket. Anyone know the characteristics of them?

Agreed. Leave the RA IV to a numbers matching restorer. It's too expensive. Grog built a 350 Pontiac Z and had a site for it. 326-455 are all the same size. EDIT: Just found the link. http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=14762&highlight= Here's Rick's site. btw, the only advantage to using an aluminum intake on a Pontiac is weight. It flows very well up to the stock redline. http://www.rickeybell.com/

I don't think Steve misunderstood, as I know I didn't in what the "ring gear" spacers are used for--his info was in addition to type of post. IOW, something else to consider--and I agreed. Spacers aren't bad. The Pontiac motors I'm speaking of will commonly be in the torque range of 400-500 on the ordinary street motors and the spacers/gears stay put--they will walk if the wrong Loke-tite and torque is used, but that's common with no spacer setups. IMO, the bolt bushings we're also talking about here are the equivalent of a ring gear spacer in that they will introduce potential "slop" if not done correctly. Ring Gear spacers and bolt bushings, neither were the origianl question though.

I'd guess if you weren't too far off the stock ratio, you'd be okay. My Pontiac 8.2" carriers go from about 2.73 to 3.23, then step up to 3.3?-3.73 then another size up to 3.90-4.11. The 8.5" carrier made for 2.73-3.23 can take a spacer to fit any gear. The clutch style might go to 4.11 without a spacer--that's been done already hasn't it? I'm going with an auto so I MIGHT go with a 4.11 or so. For my taste, the 3.7 was too much gear for the T5 borg until 3rd gear.

Has anybody considered using the diesel torque convertor behind a turbo or stroker turbo? Can anybody offer any specs to stall and generalities/specifics of diesel type convertors? Seems they would be designed to operate with a higher torque at a lower rpm, but maybe I'm incorrect. I intend to use an automatic trans in my 260 turbo. Thanks,

I just picked up an LSD in a Kentucky junkyard for $175 today. I knew it was there for a couple months. The rear cover was busted from an accident. He wanted $50 for the pass side CV and $20 for the driver's. I passed so I could buy some other stuff. Everything inside this unit looks excellent and appears to function well. The oil was sparkling clean. I paid $200 or $250 for one in Dalton GA about 4 yrs ago and sold it (like a moron for $375 a yr later). Supposedly the car owner was driving home from paying the final payment to the bank and totalled the car. Bummer. After installing the first one in a 280ZXT, I took it for a drive and punched it where I normally drift a little,------and almost planted the car into a concrete barrier. Instead of one wheel slipping against the weight, the other side grabbed and launched it in the direction I was pointing.

Okay, I'm guessing the rest would weigh in at around 75-80 lbs.
-
Anybody know what the setup weighs or at least what the trans alone weighs? I'm trying to get a handle on what the total weight of the setup is when used on the earlier Z. Thanks for any help!
-
I'm gonna go with a maybe, too. Is that 50 dollars shipping and handling though? 50 seems a little high, but I don't know what shipping out of Canada costs to TN or what kinda boxing is involved on your end. It could be more than I'm thinking.

It's on Main St at Mostellers. I saw it in 92 and got a picture of it today. Supposed to be people still remaining in it. Sounds like BS, but I've heard two seperate people say hte same thing over the 12 yrs. (Supposedly) It impacted the pole directly on the top of the car at high speed. Is this a fake or what?

I just saw a WRX and a supercharged MR2 jump from a dead stop and was not impressed with the WRX. It made some noise and didn't really go anywhere. I haven't driven one so I don't have a real feel, but the kid couldn't drive I guess. the MR2 waxed it.

550 sounds like a pretty standard price if it's good work. The money you're paying is for knowing where/how to port/polish, not the materials to do the work. Bowl blending isn't too hard to figure out though. Niether is gasket matching. I haven't had any Nissan stuff ported yet.
-
I just found an 83 ZXT and the guy wants $300 for it. He says it has a bad turbo and some injector leaks. Think it can be had for $250. Has a T5 in it.

What's the cost on a 2.8L turbo motor these days?
opie replied to opie's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
The one I'm getting is burned up from the rear. Looks like the gas line at the tank burst and burned the rear and cabin of the car. The engine compartment is still untouched. I'm giving 150 plus whatever the towing is. Minus the wheels, the CVs are junk, the trans is an auto. So, I'm getting the motor with P90 head/auto trans and all under hood stuff for 150 plus towing. Anybody ever have one of these? There's a couple around here, but I haven't seen the owner's out somewhere to ask them yet. I'm not after speed at the moment. I just don't want to drive around in a plain old Maxima and a there's a 71 240 close by for a few hundred dollars that needs a fuel tank/hood/fender and brake rewiring.
-
I wouldn't do it for speed. I hadn't planned to turbo it or anything. Just to experiment a bit. I just got another complete diesel motor and have thought about it. Anybody have fuel economy figures on the diesel Max?
-
Oh yeah, it's gonna be slow. Speed is just a motor pull away with a Z though. Wonder what the MPG is on one though?
