look arround. try a search. break your questions up into proper forums. i'm willing to bet anything you have thought of has been discussed here at least 3 times. an example of what searching the suspension forum for "power steering conversion" would have yeilded. http://forums.hybridz.org/search.php?searchid=29753 other than that, learn to search, have fun reading, good luck and posts pics of the pretty when you're done! --gabe

or listen for the fuel pump to run when you turn the key... it does sound like a fuel or electrical problem. check your wires, check for fuel flow, make sure you're not leaking air after the maf... look for that thing you forgot to hook up. --gabe

did they say why they suggested the flush? if it was just because the "fluid is getting old" i'd be kind of sceptical. however, if the fluid is burnt or in someother way damaged i think it's a good idea. i have had a couple of cars where the fluid became 'worn' and the car stopped shifting properly and a flush corrected the problem. something to keep in mind is that the filter is not changed in one of those flushes, so it's not a bad idea to change the filter yourself after a flush. so, if it's just routine maintance, i'd drop the pan and change the filter. if there is something wrong wtih the fluid, a flush is the best way to get the old fluid out. --gabe

California veichle laws and out of state cars on vacation
GabeRoc replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
equipment laws and such should be determined by the county you are regestered in. for instance, knox tenneessee does not require tags for personal use trailers, i was recently in FL where they do require them. i was stopped and i told them they were not required where i was from. no ticket. just make sure you're legal where you're from and you shouldn't have any ticket trouble. --gabe -
i hear you there. at the end of last summer my mom totalled her Q45, got side swiped. then my parents gave the car to a friend that wanted the motor, 2 months later he sold the car, having not taken anything out of it, to a JY and now i want the LSD out of the back of it... stupid dumb luck is all i have to say. guess i'll have to go buy that LSD here as soon as i get paid.... *shrug* --gabe

HELP! almost broke my key off in my lock this morning!!!
GabeRoc replied to olie05's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
is there any water in the lock? i've had more than one car that water went into the lock and when the weather went below zero the lock almost refused to move. if it's a water problem allow the lock to get above freezing (garage or hair dryer) and spray WD-40 (Water Displacer #40) into the lock, should push the water out and lube it at the same time. if it's not a water problem i'd use the graphite powder, it seems to last alot longer in dry rubs than WD-40. --gabe -
my sister used to be afraid to ride with me but then she told me that she reasoned that if God wanted her to die, she would, and if He didn't wish for her to die she would be fine. :| this in my '81 2+2 N/A. i can't wait to see what she says when i get the '73 up and running...

Wired has an article about shushing annoying people on cell phones ( http://www.wired.com/news/wireless/0,1382,...tw=wn_tophead_2 ) and a really cool set of cards you can print out and hand to the next annoying cell user. http://www.coudal.com/Shhh.pdf -gabe

Sealing pipe joints for garage air compressor lines
GabeRoc replied to jhaag's topic in Non Tech Board
i worked in water treatment through high school and summers while in engineering school and i've found that for plumbing where the female end is metal a combination of Teflon tape and pipe dope works best. --gabe EDIT: PVC pipe + compressed air = accident waiting to happen. PVC pipe gets more brittle as it ages making it easier to crack when connecting and disconnecting hoses, not to mention the tugging and pulling. it will break and can be very dangerious when it does. -
you know, my mom and sisters have done things to cars i swore couldn't happen by accident. watching that makes me wonder if i was right...

i have found that used ATF makes a great parts cleaner, be it a bit thick. to help the consistancy i'll mix it with kerosene or diesel. makes an inexpensive vat-o-cleaner for soaking parts and such. i'm also a bit learly of water on machined parts, or at least water that isn't quickly dried and then the surface coated with a lubricant like WD-40. --gabe

Can We Convert An Auto To Manual Transmission?
GabeRoc replied to a topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
if you are asking if you can somehow alter your current automatic transmission to a stick shift, the answer is no. if you are asking if you can buy a manual transmission and swap it out for your current auto, the answer is yes. assuming you meant the latter, the swap is only slightly more difficult than a normal transmission removal and reinstallation. prices... i'm not sure what an decent manual transmission for a z typically cost, other than that you will need a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, clutch master and slave cylinder + hydraulic hose, different driveshaft, a clutch pedal assembly for inside the car and an interior consol made for a manual. that should be all the major parts needed for that swap, there will be at least a couple of 'small' items that will also might be needed, but there always are. hope this helps answer you question, gabe PS for future referance, this topic is more for fixing car problems. transmission questions are generally dealt with under the engine section. -
i do love a good beer every once and a while. some of my favorites are Red Hook ESB and nut brown, Warsteiner, Hollandia (tastes a lot like Heineken), Kingfisher (found in many indian resturants), Bass, Harp, Abita turbo dog ..... ok, so maybe more than once in a while. i tend toward the pale to amber side of things. speaking of beer, man, i'd love a beer right now. too bad i'm at work... --gabe

ok, i'm having some real trouble here understanding why a 3/4 ton truck will pull better than a 1/2 ton truck. in many cases the only difference is slightly stiffer springs in the back of the 3/4. i'm not going to say i'm a towing expert, but the only real issues with towing are tongue weight and pulling power. so, if you load the trailer properly (avoiding a tongue weight issue) and don't overload the trailer (pulling power concerns) there is no reason that a 3/4 ton truck would pull any trailer better than a 1/2 ton. in fact the only real concern i see is not lugging the drive train while towing, in most cases taking the truck out of overdrive while in hilly terain will prevent that. as for a dually, two tires in the back just allow for more tongue weight, not really a problem if you're just dragging a z arround and using your head while doing so. my .02 gabe

Trivial Persuit-timing with out timing pointer
GabeRoc replied to Ferd/289's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
i know that a shop with the proper electronics can do this. i have no idea how, but i had a van that that didn't have timing marks and they "timed it on the scope." i'm not sure if this is what you're asking or not. -gabe -
Still no start, car cranks, fuel, spark but...
GabeRoc replied to EZ-E's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
i would test it before i went out and bought a new thermistor. ( well, i would now that i have a spare one...) go to your local radio shack and pick up a resistor that is *close* to what the thermistor is supposed to be at the current temp. plug it into the harness (it should fit with a little push) if the engine runs, vola! if not 25 cents saved you some money. -gabe -

Driveability of LS1 with T56
GabeRoc replied to qwik240z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Phantom, which 6th gear do you have? i have seen several different ratios for that transmission. Thanks, -gabe -
i'll second the alternator statement. if your voltage regulator is on the blink it can ruin a battery in short order. pull it off and have it tested before putting a high dollar battery in it's place.

if cylinder #1 is at TDC, compression stroke, you point the rotor at #1 cylinder. --gabe

can overly high oil pressure raise crankcase pressure?
GabeRoc replied to Ferd/289's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
even in a wet sump motor high oil pressure won't cause increased internal engine pressure. if you have high crankcase pressure odds are it's the PCV valve. --gabe
