Fuel pressure @ 18psi? + horrible track experience...
Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
7.88 @ the 1/8th. It was 8.061 when i ran the 12.4 and, this time i wasn't bleeding down boost anymore like i was when then so, who knows i guess. Seems like i would've pulled off a better time. This morning, i feel better, and worse. Pulled her off the trailer this morning, driving to work, went to shift and the clutch went right to the floor. Pedal cam back to the top but couldn't push it in anymore? Pulled over, popped the hood figuring the slave blew (again) but it was fine but, fully extended! Had to get to work so i drove it home 5 miles without a clutch and drove the suburban in. I'm figuring, hoping, it has to be the pivot arm that controls the throw-out bearing that bent or snapped. I'll get it on the jackstands tonight (need a JSR # ) to get a closer look. Im figuring it could either be the pivot arm busted, the throw-out bearing disintigrated or the clutch fingers melted. I don't think it's the fingers or throw-out because i didn't hear any unusual noise when i drove it home after she broke. That ACT PP that i complained about a year ago about having a MUCH harder pedal i guess finally took it's toll. Oh well. I feel better because maybe the 3-4 shift wasn't 100% my fault but, feel worse because now it's back on the jackstands LOL. -

Thanks Cygnusx1, but i just got back from the worst experience at a track i've ever had. I went to the "big time" strip here in NJ, Raceway Park, for the first time and it was bad. Got to the track and in line at 7pm. Not too too many people there but a bunch of pro cars. It was suppose to be street muffled time trial night but, ok, not big deal. After the pro cars kept running and running without letting any of "regular" performance cars run, i was getting pissed. Finally, 9pm rolls around and now they announce that only muffled cars can run now. Mind you, Track closes @ 10pm. More waiting. A few hondas sprayed some antifreeze on the track, more waiting. DSM blew an axle all over the track, more waiting. 10pm, my Z still sits in the same spot i parked it @ 7pm and they announce that the lanes are closed so dont bother coming around for another run. ANOTHER run??? We didn't get ONE run in yet! Fianlly, 10:20pm and i line up for my one and only run. Anxious, yeah, just a bit. Light drops, i pull a good light - .093 and really drop the clutch from 5k and she spins a little. Damn. Hit second gear hard and get a little slipchip. Damn but ok, not so bad. Shift into 3rd and now she's pulling like mad and i can see the end of the 1/4. Tach up to about 5800, shift into 4rth...ah..try again into 4th..ummmmm...try AGAIN IN 4th....one more time and i get it. Yup, you got it. I missed the 3rd to 4th shift 3 times. The easiest shift you can possibly make in the 1/4, my opinion, and i missed it 3 TIMES! Finally get it into 4th, slam the pedal to the firewall and run her a bit past the line in aggrevation. 12.9@104mph. Damn. pulled it around, loaded it back onto the trailer in disgust and just got home - 12:50am. What a horrible night. Sorry to vent but it just completly sucked. I'll be going to my usual track from now on that doesn't have all the bright lights and bullsh*t of Raceway Park. At least i can make as large a mistake as i did tonight and get at least 10 more runs in to try to do it right!!! ok, i feel better now -
Hey Cody, seems the T5's have been blowing more and more lately. My cousin just went through his 2nd T5 in 6 months. First one he completly stripped 3rd gear of the teeth and now has messed up the synchro's between 2-3rd and 3-4th on #2. He can only shift it lightly or it'll just grind so, it's shot. I'm looking into the 84-86 T5 to see if it could be made to work, and only if the torque rating is higher. Keep us posted on which way you go because we're going to need to do something soon, just don't have loads of cash to spend on something like the TKO or T56 right now. G force might just be the right way to go. Thanks for the heads up Jeff. Good luck.

Fuel pressure @ 18psi? + horrible track experience...

Test ran it @ .038" and she coughed again at high boost. Back to the garage and cleaned the connectors - HTS, AFM, ECM, TPS - and all the grounds... now she breaks loose in 3rd instead of coughing I just got in from loading it on the trailer (first time not driving it to the track but have a funny feeling i'll be breaking something tonight) and it's off to the track later tonight (Wed), shooting for an 11.99999999 LOL. Thanks again for everyones suggestions. -

Thanks Drax, Clifton. I just dropped new plugs in gapped @ .038". The originals that were in there were @ .042" for over a year and she never stumbled until about a week ago so i'm hoping the little bit of build-up was the cause. Figure i'll try and drop them down just .004" and see how she runs there. If not, i'll go with your suggestion and go way down to .030". Thanks. Time for a test run... Keep ya posted. -
Hey all. I was wondering if anyone has successfully mated a Z31 T5 to the L28 block? From what i've learned so far, the bells can be swapped from an 82-83 T5 onto the 84-86 T5 but the input shaft on the Z31 T5 is longer. True? If so, a few questions... Can the 82-83 T5 input shaft swap into the Z31 T5? Are the input shafts the same diameter and splined the same? Can a spacer be used between the bell and the body of the tranny to essentisally shorten the input shaft on the Z31 T5? Does anyone know the torque ratings of both or either tranny? I would hope that the Z31 T5 is rated for higher torque since the 300ZXT weighed more and had more HP. Any info is appreciated. Sorry for so many Q's. Thanks in advance.

Fuel pressure @ 18psi? + horrible track experience...
Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Thanks Yo. Any idea about the pressure i should be running? Damn i wish i had bought the LM-1 when i had the cash! I'll see if i can find the 7's and run them. After i posted last night, i pulled the plugs and re-checked the gap - 42. So i brought them down to about 40 and bumped fuel pressure up to about 39 @ idle (21hg vac) which worked out to be near 68psi at full boost, but i still have that little hiccup. I've had these plugs in there for a while now so that could be causing the problem as well. At 68psi of fuel pressure with the small T3 @ 18psi, i think that's plenty of fuel and probably a bit rich up top. I'll try a plug change and back the pressure down a little to see if that's the cure. Thanks again. -
Hey all. What do you guys think fuel pressure should be @ 18psi, stock T3, 370cc injectors on a stock L28ET? I know thats pushing the T3 past it's efficency level but, that's all i have to work with right now I just took the Z out for a "spirited" run and she was coughing a bit up near 18psi. Fuel pressure was up at about 62psi. Pulled the plugs and they seemed a little white so i'm assuming a little lean. The bpr6es are gapped at 39 supplied by an MSD6a. I'm hoping to get to the track Wednesday night so i'm mainly concerned with WOT for now. Thanks.

so with this weight and this rwhp what ya think it will run

P90 that came on the '82ZXT's. No boost controller, just threaded the WG actuator I'm not sure of what your goals are with ol' blue but if they are to build a nice powerhouse, i'd save a little cash and go forged. My opinion anyway. -

My guess would be with Yo's, you may have a possible ringland problem. I found out that i was stretching 3rd too far when shifting @ 6k because i thought it was still pulling real hard but have figured out if i shift out a little earlier, say 57-5800, i can pull a better ET. I pushed it last time i went to 18psi but i think there's a problem because once the speed catches up with itself and there's less torque, the pressure slowly decreases down to about 15 by the end of the 1/4. I'm not 100% sure if this is why the boost is dropping off, because the little T3 just cant hold that type of boost without the torque or, possibly something else is wrong, like the BOV is leaking or something? Anyone reading this have a suggestion? I'm running the stock headgasket. This P90's never been off the block but I'm sure it will be soon... possibly after Wednesday night since i think i'm really going to push it to get an 11 I haven't heard this done yet with the T3, stock block/head and stock electronics. Hope it's nice and cool out ans teh wind is blowing down the track! lol. -

What DP are you using 525? If it's that cast 90deg one, see if you can find or fab up a smoother flowing one. My opinion but, i think that stock 90deg pipe really backpressures the turbo and in turn, heats it up real quick. I was running about 14-15psi, stock injectors and smaller NPR. Yes, i'm sure i was realllly lean on the top and took a major chance but i got lucky i guess. I'm still playing with fire even though i can richen it up across the full rpm range with the MSD AFPR but, i just want to see if i can hit 11's with this "basically" stock setup. If and when i do i will be going in some sort of aftermarket electronics way to do it right. 2325 was what it weighed in at the night i ran the 12.88. I may be getting back to the track on Wednesday for the first time since i ran the 12.47 in June and they have a scale which i'll weigh again and let you know. Mike - with the T5, 3.54 and 215/50/15's, i crossed the trap screaming in 4th near 6k doing 106mph, which i think is out of the powerband range for a stock L28ET cam by about 4-500 r's. Now i run the 235/60/15 BFG DR's which are about 26" diameter and crossed the trap in 4th @ 111mph and right at about 5200rpm. I think the r's are a little low now but if i can get down the track a little quicker, it should be right where i want to be. What's your tach reading at the end of the trap in 3rd and what's your MPH? -
so with this weight and this rwhp what ya think it will run
Jersey replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
You guys should be right there - low 13's, high 12's. Mike, i'd say you added about 50hp going from 5psi to 10psi so that should get your times much lower. I'm 165lbs and my Z weighed in @ 2325 at the time i ran the 12.88. 525, the differences between my Z back then and your current setup is a full 3" mandral exhaust, my 45deg DP and a set of 235/60/14 firestone street tires (just so not to run out 4th through the trap) I also didn't have an adjustable FPR back then like you do now. It was 80 degrees w/90% humidity that night and i pulled a 1.96 60ft. Not too optimal but it all worked out for those 13 seconds i guess! lol. I noticed a nice improvement by the seat-o-da-pants dyno from the 45deg DP and the full 3" mandral exhaust so it might get you where you want to be. Then again, once we reach our goals, dont they change to just out of reach again??? -

Jersey replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Mike, why are you only running 2psi? Sorry if i missed it, but i don't frequent the board as much lately. 525, no secret, just driving it like i stole it -
I think as well that 11's are yours once you get the little bugs out. Nice runs! I'm also interested in the Z31 tranny swap. Is it suppose to be stronger that the 82-83ZXT T5? My cousin just burned up his 2nd & 3rd gear synchros in the second T5 within 2 months! Stripped 3rd gear out of the last one. I've have no problems with my T5 but i'm not pushing as much torque as he is but, i think it's just a matter of time. Hey Doug, how are you launching on boost with the 5speed? I was thinking of a linelock but i'd hate to abuse my clutch like that. Thanks.

whats the perfect size slicks for 15x6 wheels?
Jersey replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Mike, not slicks but, i run the BFG DR's 235/60/15 on a set of '83 turbo rims at the track. No rubbing, pretty darn good grip and the price is good. I think i paid $135 each. I also have KYB's in the back but my Z is lowered about 1.5" with approximate 210lb springs. -
Vacuum Control Valve - What exactly is its purpose?
Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
You should be fine john. The N42 doesn't have the port for the VCV. I can't say for sure how high your vacuum is going to be say, when lifting off the throttle in gear at a high rpm because i would think without any sort of vent (ie. PCV) it would be rather high, but i'm just guessing here. Why no PCV? Just curious. EDIT: Sorry John. Just re-read your post and you said no EGR, not PCV. You'll be fine. -
I have a similar AutoMeter boost gauge as the one you posted the link to and it seems to work well. The fuel and oil pressure gauges i have are electronic.

Sounds good Pete. I will continue this conversation as well until you accept the FACT this this conversation is based on OPINION and that our OPINIONS on this discussion are just different. Obviously, you are stuck on thinking i am challenging Newton's law or some other article of FACT but no, no i'm really not. I don't understand why you can't comprehend what i'm trying to say? You do at one point and then start throwing your education and Newton in the mix, which cannot be applied to our discussion at this time since we do not have ALL the facts. Ummm,??? Sorry, i dont remember saying anything like that? And why would i when that information is FACT? You say here: YES. Exactly what i'm trying to say. I do not believe the loads applied by the rear towers will compromise the bar i used. You understood my OPINION on this whole discussion right here. This has been exactly what i've been saying from the beginning. Perfect. But then you continue to say: I do listen, you should try it as well. You can have all the education in the world and your OPINION will still not become fact. I hope you know this. I believe some of the friends i debate opinions with on a regular basis do not know this sometimes I do accept your OPINION and have said that many times. Maybe you were'nt "listening" You used the correct word here - MIGHT. It MIGHT, or MIGHT NOT. See, it's a difference of OPINION. What you don't understand is that this conversation is because you can't understand that this is just a difference in OPINION because we do not have all the exact figures to make it a fact that the bar i used is just as strong as a straight bar i used in this application we're applying it to which is between the rear strut towers of an S30, or it's not. It's really that simple. First, i hold onto my opinion because we don't have enough information to make this fact. And if you'd like me to change my opinion based on your education and/or any other credentials that you've stated, it's not going to happen. Why? because we do not have all the exact figures to make it a fact that the bar i used, in this application we're applying it to which is between the rear strut towers of an S30 is just as strong as a straight bar, or it's not. Am i sounding like a broken record yet? If so, GOOD I'm hoping you, and possibly the other readers that may be confused on our discussion, will understand what i'm trying to explain here. I will not listen to your OPINION beacuse that's all you're going on. UNLESS you know the exact mesurement of load the rear towers apply. If you do know these, i stand corrected and my OPINION is out the window. If you don't know these values, you have an opinion on this discussion as well. You THINK the loads are great enough to compromise the bar i used. I DO NOT THINK they are great enough. See? Both opinions. This isn't about last word Pete. What i really think this is coming down to is that you're either trying to make fact out of your OPINION or you just cannot understand my OPINION. I do not argue with my freinds Pete, we have differences of OPINIONS. When there is fact involved, i do not argue against something that has already been proven. That's common sense. What they do is tend to state their opinions so strongly that they actually believe them to be facts, which you seem to be doing the same here. At 36, i am always learning and am always willing to learn. You should try it even with all the education you have. Have you seen me throw in my credentials of all the years of education or field experience i have? No. Why? Because what i'm trying to state is based on my OPINION. Busting chops is good. Believing that your OPINION is actually FACT? Not so good. I accept your opinion Pete. What would be nice and we coould put this whole discussion to bed is if you accepted mine. But if you can't, it would be nice if you could just admit it that you ca't, and i'd understand, nad we'd be done here. I think I just figured out a way that maybe i could have ended this a page ago: If you CAN answer these questions with exact figures, i stand corrected because i wasn't aware that these values existed, and i aplogize. If you CANNOT answer these, then all you are going on is your OPINION. What amount of load is applied between the rear strut towers in an S30, in any driving condition - dragging, autoX, etc.? How much force needs to be applied to the bar i used to start compromising it? If we had both of these figures, we could plug them into proven equasions and deterime which of our OPINIONS is correct. Just a difference in opinion Pete. Looking foward to your responce. PoP N Wood - you are crackign me up over here. lol. And lay off the "girly" stuff. It's a SISSY bar lol. Jon - you've got it - But i think in any application, not just dragging. Although, thinking about it, a hard launch may put the most amount of compression stress on a rear bar because the tops of the strut towers will be pressing toward each other, rather than in the same direction when cornering. And thanks for the props. It was fun just to figure out that i can make it work for something on the Z, otherwise it was going to the junks. I spent more time typing and reading this forum alone than it took me to create it! lol. Mike - If we meet up at summit point, i may have to swap out my rear bar to a straight one. That way i'll be somewhat competitive lol. j/k. But i do like the sounds of racing with some other Z's! Anytime. -

Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
LOL. Thanks POP N WOOD Pete, no reason to break out all your books or make a curved bar or waste any more time on this. It's just my opinion that the rear strut towers will not apply enough force to compromise the curved bar I USED at any time. Another curved bar with different dimensions/charcteristics than what i used, sure, the towers may flex it. If you can't understand or accept my opinion, because there are NO FACTS here that the bar I USED will flex in it's current application, than so be it. Disagreement of opinion is human nature and healthy but if you start to believe your own opinion so much that it becomes fact to yourself, i consider this a pretty closed minded person on specific subjects. A few of my closest friends are exactly like this and i battle with them all the time on many different subjects that are based on opinion, but they can't accept anothers opinion because they believe thier opinion is right and must be fact. Pete, i'm not saying this is how you are but you sure did remind me of them here I'm not pissed, this was nothing personal and probably just a big waste of HybridZ's server space. BTW, i've worked on cars, trucks, boats since i was a kid, holding the flashlight for my father at the age of around 8. Please don't let the "Network Administrator" or "Husband/Father" titles scare you on my technical opinions -

Drax, i think this is just a difference in opinion and a good possibility and a mis-understanding of what i'm trying to explain. I'm not argueing one bit and i hope that Pete doesn't think that. In responce to your reply, I bet you can feel the rear bar move when the rear flexes, but they're flexing in the same direction when you feel it, not in opposite directions. Also, it's don't think it's common knowledge of what i stated - The "specific duties" i was referring to was in the back of a Z between the strut towers. I don't know what the amount of compression or expansion load is applied between the rear towers but, if it is common knowledge or posted somewhere that i missed, i apologize, i didn't know someone had measured that already. Maybe you and Pete both already know these values and that's why you cant understand my opinion? Maybe here's an easier way for me to explain all i'm trying to say. If i grabbed a straight bar with my arms on both ends and compressed it with as much force as i humanly could and measured the amount the bar compressed, i dont think there would be any different results with the bar i used, just because the simple fact that i cannot apply enough force to compromise the bar. I just dont think that the rear towers apply the amount force it takes to comprimise the bar i used. Now if you incresed that force by 3, 5 or maybe 10 times the amount (guessing because i dont know the exact #'s), the bent bar i used will absolutely flex much quicker than a straight bar, i agree 100% with you both on that and i do know that is basic knowledge and a proven fact. I don't know how else to put it. I guess it's just hard for to explain sometimes what i'm trying to say here typing it. I'm just trying to state my opinion, thats all. Not trying to argue and not meaning for anyone to get upset or pissed about this post. I now feel like going home, taking that bar out and smashing it into about a thousand pieces, just because. j/k. I like my snazzy chrome bar. It even has two threaded t*ts on top that i mount my camera to when i'm driving/racing -

Pete, Pete.... PETE It seems your getting all fired up over nothing. I'm trying to put it in the simplest terms as i can but obviously i'm not succeeding by the way you're responding. I'll try again because i think this is a simple disagreement of opinion but you may be thinking i'm trying to take your credentials away, which i'm not. I do AGREE with you that a straight bar has more rigidity, and i know you have more education in structural engineering than i do. With the "Network Admin with family...blah, blah" signature, it was just to bust chops. Sorry if you took it the wrong way. Here's all i'm trying to say... i'll try this way with a question - Do you think that the curved "sissy" bar that used, which is 1/16" thick and 1" OD, will flex at all by any amount of pressure that the shock towers can apply to it? I don't. If you do, that's fine and i respect your opinion. We just may have different opinions, that's all. Unless we have all the exact measurements of load/stress/strength etc. on the table, there's really no way we can come up with a definitive answer that this bar would be outperformed in it's specific duties than a straight bar, leaving us with basically just opinion.... and one snazzy chome bar I think this may be my last post on this because after all, i love this site, you are an admin, and you can ban me at any time from hybridz BTW, i see you're in the northeast like me - we should try to get some type of Z track meeting together up here. The west coast boys seem to be having all the fun! I missed SEZ this year but would love hook up with a bunch of Z's at a track before it gets cold. Let me know if you're interested. Truce? 8)
