Yes. There's a write-up HERE about the shifter and a few pics of the longer eared late 5 speeds. Thanks Doug.

Thanks Doug. I found an 82-83 tranny, to be picked up soon. Since one of the trannys i have has no cover plate, but has the short shifter "ears", i'm going to assume it's the '80 model. I don't know either if there's any difference between the internals of the '80 and the '81-'83 except the 5th gear ratio (.745 vs .780) but at least i'll know that i will have the latest nissan tranny going in to start with. Thanks.

Nice job Terry! Awesome times. Cant wait to see the 10sec video in a week or so

Anyone run these Yokohama's on their Z?
Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
That 60 treadwear on the A032R will burn off a little too quick with my foot. I'm running 215's now and they're a little too thin for me. I'm trying to get the most surface contact i can with the widest tire possible under stock fenders and i think the 225's look just about right on the Z, just my opinion. If i could go wider, without spending a fortune for new wheels, coilovers...etc, i would. I never did get new wheels unfortunately. It's not that i hate the 5 star, i just wanted something different. Maybe next tire change. Congrats on the new wheels and thanks for the info. BTW - i like my pumpkin orange Z -

Maybe the PO didn't tell you he drove 30k miles in that one year datsunlover j/k I was looking at the AVS as well Cody but no 15" in these either. Thanks for the replies guys. -
Anyone run these Yokohama's on their Z?
Jersey replied to Jersey's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
If i could go with the Falken Azenis's, they would be my first choice but they don't make my size - 225/50/15. I guess i'll give the Yoko's a try because i really dont drive the Z in wet weather and if they stick pretty well with the weight of our Z's, treadwear really becomes secondary to me. Thanks again for everyones input. -

Thanks Bill. -
Thanks for the link Larry. So there are 3 different FS5W71B's: '77-79, '80 and '81-'83. Do you know of a way to tell the difference between them by eye, or any other way for that matter?
-
I was wondering how i could tell the difference between the 2, or 3, different nissan FS5W71B 5 speeds? I thought there where only 2 - the '77-'79 and the '80-'83 but then i was told today the '82-'83zx was different also? So i'm a little confused there but, i have 2 nissan units sitting side-by-side in my garage and i'm just trying to figure out what year they're from. One has the cover plate on the tailhousing and the other doesn't (reference here - CLICKY) but again, i was told this may not matter. The ears that the shifter pivot on are the same length if that helps any. I think i've made a choice to try a FS5W71B, the later one with the better gear spread, to see how it holds up. All this talk about how bad the T5 is and the increasing talk of 3rd gear blowups, i might as well put it to the test. I think Joe and Ken planted the seed on this one Anytime you guys want to come to the garage for the swap, you're more than welcome I'll even buy the beer. ha. Thanks in advance to any info.

Nice job Moby. I used to run that same IC. Got me the 12.4. Good luck with it.

White, where are you located in NJ? If it was fairly close, i'd take a ride and look at it w/you. Your fathers expectations do seem a little high considering we're in NJ and the salt has eaten most all Z's in the immediate area but... i'm sure with a good, large pocket of cash, you could find one with minimal rust. No rust... you'll need to look far west and even that's getting tougher. I picked my Z up about 3 years ago that's been sitting in a garage for 12 years in PA. Floors ,battery tray and adjoining firewall were all basically shot. Like Tim said, 1" = 3".. or more. Post or send the pic if you can. Good luck.

Any of you with Dynomax Bullet mufflers? (Jersey you around?)
Jersey replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Hey all. That is the same $35 Dynomax i'm using and don't think it's loud at all, then again, i'm only running the stock T3. It does sound a little louder on my cousins 280ZT which i built the same exhaust for front to back but he's running a T3/T4. I've had some comments that it doesn't sound at all like a 6cyl and they'd swear i was running an 8. When i got done welding up the entire exhaust, the end of the Dynomax ended up even with the back of the Z so, i just cut a 5-6" piece of the 3" pipe i had left over from the exhaust and used it as a tip. I did cut it on a 45deg just for looks. I'm sure the chrome tip would look nicer but, i'm cheap and i know the chrome wouldn't make me any faster Performance-wise... i couldn't tell you what kind of difference the muffler made by itself, if any, because i had made the 2.5" downpipe and full 3" exhaust at the same time and installed it at once. All together i think it really woke the Z up and allowed it to spool earlier and quicker. I will try an snap a pic of it today and post what it looks like. BTW - Happy Easter. -
I just checked it out and it's an open. I think nissan was a little up in the air about which diff to use between 4/87 & 8/87 because i seem to remember them using both the 3.9 open and the 3.7 LSD. Maybe the LSD was an option but i'd be guessing on that. Anyway, thanks for the replies guys.

Anyone know the month of the '87 turbo's they starting using the R200LSD? I found a 5/87 but it doesn't have the finned cover? Thanks in advance.
-
I cant believe USDIESELPARTS.COM put that on ebay as a turbo w/Elvis's face on it!!! LOL. They've just made themselves look like complete idiots.

An organic disk is basically for the steet/slightly modified vehicle. A puck type disk is for when you exceed the HP/torque limits of the organic type. I've been running the Act combo with the organic and haven't felt it slip once yet but then again, the Z is light and i'm not that fast.. yet I have no idea if i answered your question but i hope so.

GForce and 5Speeds part company and I'm left without a trans...
Jersey replied to Mikelly's topic in Drivetrain
Ok. So here’s what I’ve got so far… Comparing the ford WC T5 and our NWC T5- Length from the front of the main case to the tip of the input shaft: WC-T5 = 7 1/8" NWC-T5 = 7 1/4" Bell depth: WC-T5 = 7" NWC-T5 = 6 1/2" So, with our bell bolted to the WC-T5, the input shaft would stick out approx 3/8" more. Not a big deal if the end of the L28 crank has the room to accept the added 3/8". If not, this wouldn't be a hard fix by either using a spacer between the bell and L28 or getting the front of the input shaft wacked by the exact amount needed. A pilot bearing needs to be found that would be plug-n-play or, one could be pretty easily made. A clutch would have to be made with a 225-240mm disk attached to a hub that would accept the ford input spline. Someone here just had something similar done from Clutch Specialties and it was no problem so i'm thinking this wouldn't be an issue. I don’t know diameter of the ford bearing retainer that the throwout collar rides on but, if it's the same as the Nissan T5, all set. If it's a different diameter, we'd need to purchase the ford T.O. bearing retainer and bearing ,or just go hydraulic. For the output side, you will need to get a driveshaft made to mate the Ford yoke to the Datsun rear. Here's the catch, measuring from the face of the main case to the center of the shifter location: Nissan - 21 3/4" Ford - 18 3/4" Jon, I've seen that done on other hybrids (mazda/T5) but didn't know if it affected shifting in any way? How does your setup shift, just as if the extension wasn't there? I've got the Pro 5.0 sitting in the garage, never installed, i'm wondering if this would be and easy route since the Pro stick is 2 piece unit anyway. Would just need to make a horizontal 3" extension to get the stick to land in the right position. And if you didn't have and aftermarket stick, the route you went doesn't sound too difficult for the average guy to do or get done. Please take for granted, all the dimensions i wrote on the ford WC-T5 was from others that measured it for me, since i don’t have one on hand. If they’re slightly off, don’t shoot me I called G-Force on Thursday and spoke w/Mark. Much better conversation than i had w/Bubba. They build their tranny with their gearset (or whomever actually makes it), a ford 10 spline input shaft and a chevy 26 spline output shaft. Now i've never seen a G-Force trans made for one of our Z's but i was thinking they use the chevy part to fit through our tailshaft housing without having to do a build up and boring out like Tim's guy did. Not sure on this one. I think this is all the info I have right now. I know it doesn’t amount to much but maybe it’ll spark some other thoughts/ideas on what to do. BTW - what does PMOI stand for? Not up on my acronym lingo i guess -

LOL. No wars! No, i wasn't knocking your idea, just basically explaining my thoughts last night about the exact idea you mentioned here So... John set the L28 back 4", eh? hmmm... -
GForce and 5Speeds part company and I'm left without a trans...
Jersey replied to Mikelly's topic in Drivetrain
The only problem with that is Pete, how many of these specific trans's are going to sell? Believe me, i've thought about doing it myself but it would be a big investment for possible small return. I guess a good risk-taking businessman, not looking to make a real "business" out of it, could go a little further then break-even. I've got the ford T5 figured out except for one small problem... the stick comes up short of the tunnel opening by about 3 inches. And i think since the tranny sits so close to the bottom of the tunnel, there wont be much room for a custom stick. Still trying to figure this WC T5 option out. -
I had a feeling that was going to happen by the conversation i had with Bubba 2 weeks ago, and then Mike Kelly's post yesterday. That option is gone now so, time to come up big.
-
Yes, i do have one completely apart on the bench at home. Do you know what year WC T5 that 7.18" measurement is taken from? And, is that right from face of the gear to the end?
-
Well, i cant speak for Nick because, within 2 months, he's blown 2 T5's, destroyed a piston, blew a T3 and tore up an R200! Not a good track record for him. lol. Me, i baby my Z (grinning) I think i'm going to really look into the Ford WC T5 if i can get my hands on one just to take some measurements. Know of any around? I plan on going in August. You?

We're not the only ones that've done this Joe, Tim and a few others have done the same exact thing. If i had a 280b tranny, i might try it. I only have the 280a trannies and the 2-3rd gear split is horrible. All i'm trying to do is find a stronger trans, in stock form, than both the na 5sp and the T5, but not have to spend $1600 for the G-Force. What are you running Joe?
