  1. i got my first short block today for $100, got it from my friends friend. He doesnt remember what was wrong with it when we took it down to the shortblock but he said he'll help me work on it and everything. Told me to tear it down and have the block cleaned up so i can figure out whats wrong with it and fix it. he even said he'd see what parts he can help me get deals with and what not. it was kept in a garage out of the moisture and i trust the guy so im sure its a good block, hopefully i just need some pistons, rings and bearings. Whats generally cheaper a demon or a holly?
  2. ok thats just the info i was wondering on, what cfm would you advise for the carb? because id really rather have a carbed motor for a while i have always wanted to learn how to tune a carb. i think it would be a fun experience. Thomas
  3. Back to this post as i had a thought recently, i might be moving to eather la or sacromento for school, and i was wondering with this cam would idle be a huge problem? With the 108 lobe sep and all? I wanted to be carbed for a while so i can learn to tune the old school way, but with gridlock and all being in the future would you sugest going aftermarket tpi or the like? (summit Weiand 7542 ) Thomas
  4. my friend told me the l26 was a l24 with dished pistons idk if thats true or not tho but idk who makes l24 proformance pistons
  5. depends on motor but if you got a l28.... http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt43033/pd858319/KAMEARI_L28_RACING_PISTON_KITS_ or you can use the pistons out of a ka24 it will lower the compression but ehh i dont know about l26 or l24 pistons, if your talking about a v8 sorry i waisted your time
  6. my other question was going to be what the stock rocker arm ratio? im guessing 1.5 from what you said, and my other question would be, say i run the 1.5 for a while and wanted to get the little extra lift from the 1.6's would i have to redo my whole top end set up to run it (like new pushrods and what not) or could i just swap out the rockers?
  7. Grumpyvette, I was reading John Lingenfelter on modifying sbc engines, and if i understood the camshaft chapter correctly(which i most likely didnt) he said more lift is better even at shorter duration, and i was wondering what cam would be better for street occational strip visits (summitracing) ISK-201274 , or ISK-201278, the first one has more lift, 108 lobe sep and less duration, but the second one has more duration, 106 lobe sep and less lift. I undertsand that smaller lobe seperation means more choppy idle, which i kinda want, are there any other problems with closer lobe seperation besides idle qual? i also wanted to ask which one you would use on a 350 that will mostly see freeway and city driving. im leaning towards the first one for the more lift, but i would still like your opinion on weather thats to much duration for my useage. thanks again Thomas
  8. sorry they where talking about % power used to turn them so i was just asking i didnt know there where superchargers like turbos but belt driven, never seen them before but then again never looked, again i apologise for my ignorance.
  9. Looks like one we have my my work like almost identicle i dont know the name enless your not wondering anymore. i could find out, im fairly certain we have one at whipple just like that, i think its made of magnesium but i might be thinking of a diff copresser.
  10. are you talking about me? because im fairly certain i might have just missunderstood what he said.
  11. im fairly certain your talking about the turbo when you say piping intercooler bov, supperchargers have bypasses, and internal intercoolers and no piping.. atleast whipples dont have bov's yea i understand there basicly the same thing bov's and bypasses yea i know what you mean about the price, i wanna do a intercoolers carbed radial kit from my work but i think even for me with the whole employe discount or w.e id still be paying 5 grand i think....
  12. what about twin screw supperchargers? i dont know much about superchargers and the differance in types, but i know the company i work for makes crazy power off little boost.
  13. if you want better tires you could try these, i "hear" they are bery nice when warm to the touch, and stick well. but ive never used them because i havent had a need yet haha. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?pc=28793&counter=1&ar=50&rd=16&sw=false&cs=225 i hope you fix your problem i think its the tire hopping problem to me.
  14. Did you use the master cylender from a 79-81 280? (im assuming you have a 240) i "think" its bigger and i assume bigger would mean more pressure right? You could also try a differant compound brake pad, might be the one you use isnt "good enough" or something. Im not the sharpist tool in the shed but those are what id look at first, other then that i dont have a clue, but i would try that first. hope i helped if even a little. Thomas
  15. Grumpyvette, i had a couple more (sorry if my consant questions annoy you) i was wondering what the compression was in a third gen camaro 350, i was planing on pulling one out of one next month and checking barrings and what not to see if it needed a rebuild and if not i was just going to rebuild the valve train/ new cam(a little beefier cam) and match port it. I am a polisher at whipple suppercharger ind. and can match port it simple enough with the help of my supervisor. I hear those motors are fuel injected, would it be hard to make it carborated? would it take more then an aftermarket intake manifold and a carborator? i was thinking this route would be a little bit cheeper and easier then startign out with a built motor, i figured it would allow me to grow instead of just jumping to a high torque/horsepower car, does that make sence? and it would that be a wise idea, just to get everything sorta dialed in and get the car running for now? thanks for whatever advice you have. It is much appreviated. p.s. before i rebuild the valve train i was going to read and reread the valvetrain chapters in those books you advised me to read im about half way threw the how to modify chevy small blocks Thomas
  16. it wont let me or i would. the edit button is nowhere to be found
  17. I found them, sorry for asking stupid questions. I was wondering, i can get a powerbrute lsd and as lont as the diff gear lines up i can use it right? (wondering if im understanding all of this right)
  18. hey grumpyvette, i had a thought about a day or so ago. Would it be hard to take the intake manifold off a LT1 and put it on a gen I 350 block? and make it fuel injected or is that a total not ganna happin? (basicly would it bolt up or not even be close kinda like that idea? just a thought i had, still reading those books by the way, things in my household are getting crazy harder to have time to sit and read. thanks again for all the help youve been so far, and all the knowledge youve passed on to us here Thomas
  19. has anyone tried the phantom grip in a z? my friend said they would be to unreliable, but i dont see how. im no genius but i think the only problem would be turning. id rather spend 350 bucks to have an 3.54 r180 lsd then spend time at a junk yard to spend like 100 bucks and then 400+ for lsd. i mean it would be wise for me to just bite the bullet and spend the cash and be sure it would last a while but im cheap. sorry my main question is, has anyone used the phantom grip? Thomas
  20. from what i read on this thread, so far and think i understand. i should be good if i just replace all of my u joints and CAREFULLY inspect the halfshafts often, and not do smokeshows? and that failure takes longer then (really hard launch, "laud boom from rear end")" so inspect it often and make sure there well greased, and that the shock from running drag radials at a strip can cause them to "sudenly" break? did i understand all that so far? hope i understood it all. Thomas
  21. so does that mean after around 300 or so horse they start breaking? what where those ones off of a 280zx?
  22. yup, it was i thank everyone for there replies and knowledge givin. i think i will just get some arp studs for mine i think (hope) that will work. Thomas
  23. yea i have no clue why he said it, i just wanted to know if it was true, i got really mad because i wanted to put a sbc in my 240z, im like its my car... but he finaly came around when i told him off. but thanks for the help all, makes it easier to get my 240 actually running, and driveable, less i have to work on it about what amount of torque do the halfshaft u joints satrt to say goodbye? (or break) or is this not the right spot? nice 280zx there datsun280zx Thomas
