  1. How much do you think rebuilding a 5 speed stock tranny costs in the Bay Area? Someone is selling one near me for 50$ condition unknown from a salvaged car. I would like that extra gear and will be doing clutch work soon. Any ideas are good or good companies around to call. Thanks, Kyle
  2. Has this happened to anyone. I replaced my switch with a used one ( I was told it worked fine by the Z barn) and I still only have high beams. Better than no beams at all though. Will the relay install help this? How do I track down this kind of electrical problem? Headlights are new too. Thanks in advance, Kyle
  3. Hey all, I tried to search for cures of vibration but not many were found. I ahve a 78 280 still with the original motor and everything. I replaced my driveshaft with the one from motorsport auto(replacable u-joints) and replaced my tranny mount and diff mount. I thought this would stop my car from vibrating. It didn't, Could I have installed the driveshaft wrong? Are there any other places to look for this problem. Could my flywheel be unbalanced? How do I tell if it is a tranny problem? It is a 4 speed. I notice the vibration at all speeds, but not as bad or at all when sitting idle. I don't have the clunk that I used to before I replaced the diff mount. That is good. What are the best ways to track this down? Thanks once again, Kyle
  4. who is this CD that is spoke about. Is there a link to there site or an address for it? Thanks
  5. Here more than I like to admit. I suppose I could learn a new language or something instead. But this is just too much fun.
  6. Good job PJ. Looks like you picked up welding pretty good. Is that a proportioning valve next to the stick shift for your brakes? How was it doing the 4x4 brake kit? Anything you would suggest, hints tips things you did wrong so I can learn from your mistakes? I have never pulled hubs before, anything to it? Special tools etc? Anyway looks great now. Can't wait to move back east just so I can see it. Good luck, Kyle
  7. 280zx started in 1979. The jtr book covers all swaps done on the Z's up till the zx. The rest of the information is somewhat applicable on the later 280zx's. From what I have read the easiest swap is to put in a 350sbc carbed engine. There is a ton of info on this site. Search it until your fingers are red. The members here are all great and helpful but these are answers that can be found in the search. At least preliminary answers untill you have more specific questions. The moderators are wanting people to search first, that is all. Good luck
  8. when upgrading to the 4piston calipers is it recomended to use the vented rotors? Since there are ways of upgrading to 4 piston calipers that don't use the modern motorsport method I can do it but have to use stock rotors. How much better are vented rotors than non-vented? Will using the s12w calipers plus the modern motorsport adapters be the best and cheapest way to go? Someone here is willing to sell me rebuilt calipers for 120.00 That seems really fair so that is the way I am leaning to go. Thanks
  9. Where is the best place to buy inexpensive 4 runner calipers? I know that modern motorsport sells the kit to adapt them and that is the route I will most likely go. Junk yards? and then get them rebuilt? New from a dealer?I found them for 100 a piece on a website that sells new parts etc. I know that so many has done this and there might be a good place to buy them. All in all 200 for the pair is not bad. Just thought I would ask. Thanks
  10. Thanks, did you guys do the windshield yourselves or have a shop do it. Are there any special tools required?
  11. Hey there, Just washed my car today and realized that I have a leak at my front windshield. In the front left corner. My windshield has small chips so I want to go new. Victoria British has new ones for 100$. Are they any good? Also their OE seals are kind of expensive. Has anyone tried the reproductions ones? Are they anygood? Do you need to replace the molding set when you replace the windshield? Or if mine is in good shape reuse it? Or has anyone tried the permatex windshield sealant that is supposed to flow in like water but dry to create a flexable tough clear seal? I would like to not spend much untill I strip the car full in two years when I move back east and have a garage to do a full rebuild and v8 swap. I would like to spend my money now on brakes etc getting ready for the bigger engine. As always all the help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kyle
  12. WOW!!!!!!!! That is the nicest looking and well constructed Z I have seen here in a while. Which is saying a lot since I look here often drooling over what mine might look like someday. Is that a new dashboard?? Or did you have it refurbished? Did you do it yourself? And where did you get the climate control stuff? What kind of actuator are in the dash to open and close all the valves for heat, defrost etc? Really nicely done.
  13. has anyone found an aftermarket rear hatch seal. Mine I got from Victoria British and my trunk doesn't close all the way. Would the heating in a bucket of water method work there as well? Any tips on the rear hatch is great too. Thanks
  14. The manual is kind of pricy for a book that will just get older and dirtier. Courtesy Nissan has the same book for sale but on CD. It it text searchable too. I have one for the 280z and love it. I just print up the section that I need double sided like a book and add it to a binder. As I need my binder gets all the sections added and if I dirty a page I can reprint it myself. Or I can just have a few pages with me and not wory about the rest. If you are just looking for the wiring diagram I might be able to email them to you. I am not sure if I can, but maybe. Otherwise it is a great investment. I think I spent around 60$ for it so it is a little costly. Good luck
  15. I will sleep well tonight. Good job, nice to hear it wasn't anything really expensive or hard to do.
  16. What was your cost on re uphostered seats? And what did it cost to get the rest of the car done. As a comparison if I went that route. Thanks
  17. sears makes a screw puller thing. It goes in your drill and looks like a mill bit a little. Just back the screw/bolt out slowly or it will take metal away from the screw head. Works pretty good
  18. You can probably get a relay from the Z Barn. They have all sorts of stuff in stock used. There prices are good and low too. Ships quickly too. I th ink they are in Tenn or something. Good luck
  19. You've most likely tried this but I had the same problem before. It turned out to be my ground to my battery. It was on tight and all, looked good but must have been corroded or something. Anyway when the problem happened you could hit the negative cable with a wrench or something or loosen it and jiggle and reconnect. It would solve my problem. I later replaced the connectors with new ones and have had no problem since. I had the same click too......I think. Anyway good luck
  20. from what I have read that was an option that Datsun offered. Wierd huh?
  21. rent a uhaul that will fit the Z inside. Build ramps and have some people help push it in. Uhaul doesn/t care what goes inside as long as it is returned clean. The Z is light anyway. It saves the rental of the dolley too. Plus you can usually barder down the price on truck rentals by calling around and playing one company against the other. Plus location matters. Ask what is the cheapest location to rent from. It is probably away from a city in the boonies but the price diff can mean night and day. I knew someone whod did this and rented a 28 foot uhaul for 800$ one way from Seattle to New York. Good luck and happy hunting.
  22. Hey there. Is there a safe way to dispose of used brake fluid? I flushed my system out and have the old stuff in snapple bottles now. Is there somewhere to recycle it? Thanks
  23. Not a green friendly car aye? I wonder what the fuel economy is?
  24. Oh, I don't mean to say mechanics are bad. My old one still answers my questions and had always done superior work. But it is nice to save even 50% of a normal job, do it yourself and have a little extra money for the next project. However you are lucky to have someone good you can trust.
