Well, here goes.. My $200 paint job, year of work to rebuild this hulk, and $3000 hard earned bucks.. I'll put the link to my gallery first... http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=coppermine&file=thumbnails&album=180 ...because I'll try to get a few pics up here, but I dono if this will work.. Hmm.. well that sucked..can anyone else see those pics? All I get is those stupid boxes with red X's.... crap.. why can't I do this?!?

Well, as for the hight inside the car, I'd like a bit less.. but I can deal with the stock hight..I can always cut it down easily enough. I just wanted a shorter ACTUALL 'throw' ie; less distance needed to shift to the next gear. I'll see what happens tomorow (Im goin to pull some parts from that 72) and decide while Im there if I can determine if its a short throw, or just a stock handle. Thanks for all the info though guys!

1979 280ZX L28E, Air flow meter choaking the engine?

Do you have the other computer still? It wouldnt hurt to throw it in to see what it does.. And you should clean up those coroded loking conections.. and put some di-elecrtic grease on them. I think I will agree with your uncle.. might be a bad spring in the AFM..or a 'dead' spot on the circuit board/contact point (inside the AFM)... have you cut the glue on the black cover (on the side of the AFM) and looked in there? I'd try adjusting the spring tension (assuming the spring is good) in the AFM... Just hold onto the wheel with all the teeth on it, and crack the retaining screw loose. (its held on with red glue most likely) Carefully move the wheel a few teeth (tightening it) and lock the screw back down. (if you let go of the wheel now, it will unwind the spring and then, well.. that just sucks.. ask me how I know!) Fire it up and see how it runs... You might have to play with it for a bit to get it to run right, (repeat the process a few times.. one or two teeth at a time.. and try going loose and tight to see if there's any change) but then again, it might be someting else... Although the AFM is ussually the big prob with the ol' Z FI.. along with the TPS.. Have you tested that with the ohm meter? -
Hmm.. well, I think this 72 parts car has an aftermarket shifter in it, which is why I ask about the interchange betweel 72-75... It just doesnt look stock to me with the bends n it... Something else I was curious about.. will I be able to use all my 'hardware' and whatnot from my 75 to instal this other shifter? (assuming it IS and aftermatket short throw) Or would it have different parts/shims/??? than a stock Z? Sorry if this sounds stupid.. but If you make the space between the ball and pivot longer, (yes, I understand how this makes the actuall throw shorter) do you not have to raise the pivot point UP so the ball will still make contact inside the tranny? Or are the 'fingers/shift linkages' ( what ARE they called.. ?) in the trans long enough to have the ball end of the shifter stick down more than the stock one?

Wow... I likey!

Well, I did a quick search but didnt turn up anything... I know that there are 'short throw' shifters out there for my 4 speed (I'v seen them in VB and MSA I believe..) BUT; I think I may have found one in a parts car.. and I have a few Q's; 1. Would the shifter from a 72 fit in my 75 280 trany? IE; are there major difrences in the trany/shifter handle from the 240 to the 280? 2. How can I tell if it IS a short throw? The one I'm loking at (in a 72) has two slight bends in it(one going back, then it goes back up straight), sort of like the stock shifter in a Stang...wearas my 75 has a straight shifter, with no bends.. and apears to be a few inches taller. Anyone have some info?

I think its a brand new motor.. well, as far as I know they started building it for the new frontier P/U a few years back, then put it in the Z... but I mihgt be totally wrong on this..

Thats really strange... if the boot between the AFM and the throttle body is off, then the car.. well, shouldnt run! The air rushing past the flap (suction basicaly) in the AFM is the main sensor the computer uses to control the FI..(along with the tps, temp, ect) ...and it dies when you put the boot on?!? hmmm.... I'd say check the AFM for mechanical damage or wear.. maybe the flap is sticking/bent? or maybe something is cloging the boot from the air filter to the AFM... Have you checked all the electrical conections to the AFM/TPS/ect? -
Yah, thats my guess too.. looks like a Buell

Thats cool man, no offense taken. I think the 'look' of speed/power gave me some advantage (the nose lifting is soooo cool!), and the fact that I have an abnormaly heavy right foot.. People see a car like my old Z (and it looks damn good at night!) and figure I won't 'DRIVE' the thing, cause hey.. its a clasic, resotred, whatever... .. heh..I bought/built this thing to have fun, and I plan on getting all the fun I can out of it! Drive it like ya stole it. On a side note, I saw 125 MPH tonite for the first time out on the highway. Two guys came by me a good 30 mph faster then me (I was cruisin in the slow lane enjoying the summer night) in a VW vr6 Passat, and checked out the Z, stared, ect. My passenger says "wow! you see those guys lookin at you man?!?" I say "Yup. Time to show off. :)" I put it too the rug, caught and passed them at 110 and kept going. I heard a faint 'woohoo!!' as I ziped by. Took it to 120, held it for a few mins, then saw the temp climbing.. backed down to 75 and kept cruisin. Fun stuf!

[quote name="Mack.... the electramotive team that racced a 280zx during the 1980's was running about 600rwhp out of a 2.8L motor. no one has been able to duplicate those results' date=' ... McAdam[/quote] I had an old magasine (road and track maybe?) with a write up on that car (Im sure it was that car..) I remember a bit in there about the driver saying something like it was overheating (you think about it.. this engine was STRESSED to the max..) too the point that the valves were starting to BEND and stretch due to heat. He would go into a corner and let the car coast for a second or so (shifted down slowly) just to give it a 'breather' before getting back on the throttle...

My Z rattles to man.. and as far as I know (judging from mine) there is only one roller.. it sits on the outside edge of the door, and rolls on the out side of the window as the window comes down.

Well, sometime in the next 15 days I have to get my car apraised for my Ins Co. I'm kind of curious as to what the guy will apraise it for... But right now, my car only has liability on it. I can even GET comprehensive/colision without this apraisal. As of now, it's just an old car, and they would go by whatever the 'book' value says. In my case, that's about $400. Yah, I've got $4000 into mine so far, and I've only had it for a year Maybe you should get it apraised.. and go from there?

Oh yah, like I sad.. a friend of mine had a 2.8 in a cavy WAGON! Didnt look like much, but man that stupid thing would go! I couldn't touch him in my 2.0L 200sx for straightline speed, but hee hee.. I could corner better. He took a corner one day at about 45MPH (trying to follow me as I '4 wheel drifted' through the turn) and diched it. Almost rolled it actually... And I remember when I had my first car, an 81 280zx (base model, no power anything, open exhast, lead foot, ect) I raced an 89 or so Cavileir w/2.8 and I BARELY go by him in 3d gear.. I think all the weight of his stereo + bad shifting is all that let me get by! Waynekarnes; As for my car, its a 75 280z. 2.8L (probly close to actuall 2.8L now, from the rebuild done before I owned it) with 72 SU's, 280zx dizzy, and open exhast. Ive also diched the heavy bumpers, all emisions and FI related stuf.. I figure the 4 speed gives me a slight advantage, plus the tires I'm running are a bit too short (smaller diameter, easier to turn) And the Cavy, I'm sure it was a 2.8, and I could tell it was auto. I dont think the guy was really trying at first, which would explain how easily I pulled up to him.. then as he got on it, and I took 2nd gear (perfect shift, felt like driving a race car.. ) My hood lifted and I pulled by at about 4k rpm... I know what it sounds like IN the car, and I can imagine what it must be like to be beside me when I shift like that.. Maybe the guy figured I had WAY more power than I do, and that's why he backed off. Really, I expected to have to work a bit more to make that kill...

Yah, I know man! AWEsome summer line up.. There's a few I would like to go to, but I'm 99% sure I'm going to see Thornley.. should be a good night.. except for the weding Im suposed to go to the next day! Ah well.. I'll be so hung over, I wont be able to bitch about how much it sucks, and how I don't know anyone. (it's my girlfriends friends weding... meh) I hear theres an open bar though.. you know the best way to get rid of a hangover right? Heh heh.. just start drinking again!

Not to 'rock the boat' or say it's a bad thing to do ... exactly..... but why are you wanting to swap in a solid rear, when the Z came factory with a decent handling/well thought out independent rear suspension? (weak r180 diff aside..) I had an 85 RX7 with a chev 10 bolt rigged in (1st gen RX's has a four link rear sus. from the factory, just had some brackets welded on the 10 bolt) for the V8 swap i did. It was only a crusty 305 (cheap, got the car drivable) and probly had about as much power as my Z does now (I6, open exhast, SU's, ZX dizzy).. a little more torque maybe, but.. I'm just thinking about it like this.. my Z is 10 years older than the RX was, and it drives/feels way better with the independent rear.. Just curious man, don't mean to offend.

Hmmm... uh, anyone?

Cool man! I agree though... if its the Datsun gear box, it's gona explode man! I am biding my time for a deal on a wrecked dodge truck with the Hemi.. then I'll buy a claped out ZX.. then I'll mate the two... I will call it.. "The Coffin" Heh heh.. zero to whoops I'm dead in 5 seconds!

Hey slownrusty.. uh, yah..I went to barrie.. was it you that used to live in this area a while back? Well, I say keep it and let the kid buy a civic or something... The guy I bought my car from had a similar story (while he was trying to sell the car a year earlier) about a 16-17 year old who had no clue, and would probly neglect/wreck the car and/or kill himself. Said the kid's father even offered MORE money than he was asking, but nope. So the owner put a bit of $$ in, but then gave up again (no time so he said..) and tryed to sell it the next summer... but the first person who came to look at it wasnt me; It was a guy who wanted to strip it for parts and crush the rest.. again the owner refused to sell the car. So that's where I come in.. He was happy to sell it to me once he found out I knew exactly what it was, what had to be done, and that I WOULD do it. As I left, he shook my hand and gave me the key, and said "Well, I'll pass the torch.. have fun with her, and enjoy the ride!" Yup.
-
Um, yah they did. In Canada anyway.. A friend of mine used to have an 89 Cavy Wagon with the 2.8, and there are probly about 100 of them driving around here this year.. it's like all the kids that cant afford a civic, buy a cavileir and put the same crap all over them...
