Need clarification on rims..
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Well shoot man... Im interested.. just depends on what shipping is gona cost ME to get those rims up here...(assuming I can get the dash and evrything..) Check your PM's... -
Hmm.. I like that idea actually.. thanks man! And yes, it's bothersome to have a good pair of vice-grips stuck in the engine bay.. I really needed them the other day too.. I'll look at 'borrowing' something from my boss's shop.. or just turn something on the lathe.. as soon as its hooked up. (just moved shop, still sorting out stuff, unpacking, ect) I'll let you know how it works out.

Man I love my Z! It's running way rich, boging a bit, and has slow leaks in the front tires, but I didnt care! Me and a friend ,the guy who helped me the WHOLE way along with my car (went with me to pick it up when I bought it, and was here all along till it rolled out last week) and I went for a drive last night to a nearby city (40 min drive) and I am STILL smiling! Cruised down a 'main drag' and had a bunch of ppl yell out 'nice car' or RIGHT ON MAN!! and other variations.. Some interesting looks from the ladies too.. Here's the funny part.. I tried to play with a few cars, and NO ONE would go me! Saw a race start between two civics, so I caught up, passed the trailing one, and went up beside the lead car.. hee looked over, gave a bit of gas, so I thought."All right! it's on!" I drop a gear, put it down.....But.. no... I started to pull easily, and he just gave up. Aww... ok, keep cruising... Meet up with a 93 or so Cavileir at a light; Big wing, mufler, 2.8V6 (you can tell by the sound.. heh heh.. like it's under water ) he looks over, revs, I rev... light goes green... I give him a head start... then hammer down, pull past as I shift into 2nd, and ... huh? He backs off... that sucked.. This was all late at night, with no trafic, and not through residential areas btw.. but heck, I never even got over 60MPH for anyof it! Anyway, my buddy had a video camera on for most of the fun, so hopefully we can put together a little movie sometime. Just wanted to share..

I deal with it by flicking the high beams on, blaring the horn, and screaming at the offending idiot at the top of my lungs. (yah, I had an incident yesterday night..) I ussually am pretty calm, but I cant help myself when ppl do really STUPID crap on the road...

Why does the 280zx get such a bad rap? (Warning 56k)
datsunlover replied to zeeboost's topic in Non Tech Board
Well lets see here... I have owned 3 zx's and I loved them... Yes, they are somewhat slow in stock form, and the rear suspension isn't so great, but they still have the 'Z' in them. I'v heard that the 'X' actually stands for "X"tra metal. My first one was a 3 difrent color/bondo/glass/braze/pop-rivet/spray bomb piece of garbage. I loved it. (well, it was my first car.. and before that, I drove around in my moms VW Jetta so.. yah..) I actually think in factory stock form, the ZX is a nicer looking car in some ways. I actually plan to keep my 75 280 fairly stock now, and buy a zx to V8.. seeing as the rear suspension is kind of crap anyway, I'll rip it out and do something better, and able to handle some big 351W HP. Im sort of on dmyntti's side here.. And you can still find quite a few ZX's around where I live (compared to earlier Z's) in decent shape.. But dont get me wrong, I LOVE the look of the early Z's.. with an air dam and whale tail.. heh heh.. I got to get pics of mine up so y'all can see what I'm talking about. -
Thanks man, I actually was browsing the first two of those links last night and today! I am still fighting with the thing, but she runs better evry time I fiddle with it. I fixed the stumble (didn't have the carbs opening at the same time, and they wern't sync'd. Front carb was at about 1/4 open before the rear carb would start to open! ) but it still idles rough and runs WAY rich. I cant figure it out.. I assume a bit if it is caused by my dirty air filter (got a K&N on order) but it is really quite awfull.. big cloud of smoke when I gun it.. I roll up to stop light, and as soon as i stop, I get 'passed' by this white cloud of smoke! I dono.. I'll keep reading and messing with the thing and hopefully it'll get better!

Need clarification on rims..

Hmm.. wel well well... I'll have to see some pics of the rims, but it sounds interesting.. 8) -
Ok... so I searched... and I'm confused now.. Will Mustang 5.0 rims (84-9?) bolt to a 280z? Or is the lug patern/backspacing way different? Is the Z (or mustang?) 4.5 or 4.25? yah, Im dumb I guess. I ask because I have a set of 15" stang rims, and 4 good tires (195/55/15) to go on them.. but if they wont fit, then I'll have to buy tires for my 14" Z 6 spoke's.. See.. I'm thinking of the 300zx/toyota 4x4 brake swap, and Im thinking I'll need the room up front for the toy. calipers... and .. HEY! I've got mustang 15"'s here! So... uh.. anyone?
-
Hey man, I dont have all the exact info on this... but if you do a few searches, it's all here. As for the dificulty, well.. that depends on your skills.. or bank account I supose.. (ie; if you can't do things yourself, and have to pay for work done,)
-
I did a search, but didnt find quite what I was looking for.. I am looking for some ppl with a similar setup to mine (or someone who just .. knows! ) to tell me what spark plugs I should be running. Im convinced that I should rip out the Champion's that are in there right now and go with NGK's.. but what p/n? And what gap should I set them to? My car is a 75 280 (stock L28) with 72 SU's and no cat/mufler. (well, I dont clasify the 'cherry bomb' glaspack as a mufler!) I am tryin to get this thing to stop hesitating/boging (idle to about 2500) and running so rich (all the time.. stinky) I think some good plugs (and a new air filter ) might make a diff here... Anyone running a similar set up?

want too get rid points Ignition and go electronic
datsunlover replied to a topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Im running an 81 zx dizzy in my 75 280 and I love it. Simply 'plug and play' as it were... two wires, and bam; away it goes. (My 30 year old Z starts faster than my 10 year old king cab!) I assume the module will fail someday, but when it does I'll get another one from somewhere, (plenty of zx's still around) or just ditch it and hook up the MSD box I have. -
Well, I may be able to help with the 3d thing.. I don't know for sure, but if the car is still around, I may be able to get you a near MINT dash from a 72. I pulled some parts of this car a few months ago, and I'm hoping to get back soon to grab a few more. I dono where you're located.. (Im in Ontario Canada btw) but Im sure I could grab this dash for the same $$$ you'd be looking at spending on a cap.. Actualy, I think the guy who owns the car is on here (I told him about the site when I was up there pulling parts. Nice guy actually..) but I don't know his username.. I think he posted a for sale add a few months back... I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with.

I am inclined to say.. yes... but Im not 100% sure. My only thought is they might have changed it a bit when they switched from the 4 speed to the 5 speed tranny.. but maybe not?

Well, I havn't fixed the fuel ine properly yet (vice grips are working well for now) but I'm having some more weird issues. I messed with the carbs a bit today, and tried to tune them a bit.. I think I've got them pretty close as far as syncronising (by ear) but I'm still WAY rich and stinky. I now have an awefull stumble/hesitation as I get on the throttle, and have to rev it a bit more than I like to get her going in 1st. I can hear the carbs suck, but it's like they starve for fuel for a second.. if I give it a little blip up to 1500 or so cleans it up, I take off, and it pulls hard right up to red line in evry gear. Trying to cruise slow though, it feels like it has a dead spot between 1500-2000 or so.. I push and push in the throttle (slowly, bit by bit) trying to maintain a steady speed, but it suddenly will kick in and ..wel.. GO! It's fine when I wana drive like an idiot, but not so good for rolling slow down the main drag.. ya know? I was thinking a new (read; CLEAN!) air filter would help a bit, but it seams to be more of a fuel/adjustment problem than just a 'lack of maintinence' issue IMO. Something else weird.. If I cover up the vent tube sticking out of the front carb, it will sputter, and stall. But not on the rear carb.. Any ideas?

Top Gun. When Cruze is driving his bike through the lights, and the chick (name?) follows and almost wrecks her Porsche. Tom stops his bike, she pulls up behind, and when the camera changes to a close up of them talking, you can see a 240 roll up to the intersection behind them. Also; the movie 21 grams. Benicio Deltoro (sp?) is freakin out at a kid, showing him his truck (thats plastered in Jesus stickers) and there's a flat black Z parked in front and to the left of the truck... not sure if it's an s30 though...

Question about 14" tire size...
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Yah, thats what I figured. I had an 85 200sx a few years back, and I was running 215/60/14's on these same 6 spoke rims. (theres a story behind these rims... they've been around a while! ) I wanted to put 225's on, but I went to a used tire place and they tried one.. blech.. looked weird, and unsafe too.. But the 215's never gave me a prob (except a bit of rubbing.. hence my concerns) Anyway, I just wanted to ask to make sure. The tire place guy figured they'd fit too, so I guess I'll grab em. Thanks man. -
Id go for the removable targa/top. That looks AWSOME man! Do it!

Question about 14" tire size...
datsunlover posted a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Ok so Im kinda poor and cant afford even 15" rims, so I'll be rolling on the 14" 6 spoke Z's for now. (they look good though all shined up, and they're original so thats something.. ) Anyway, the tires on them now are leaking, bald, and to top it off, they are only 185/60/14. Yah. Not fun! So I found a deal on a set of 'almost new' 14s; 215/60/14. They look close to the proper hight, but really wide to me.. (especially compared to the tiny 185's!) Before I buy them up though, I need to know if they'll rub on the strut/spring perch's. This may sound dumb, but it looks pretty tight in there to me so I dono... The car is a 75 280z with stock suspension. I did a search, but can't find much about 14" tire size's... Anyone know? -
I dont think it would be valve related... posibly ignition timing though... Did this car run once upon a time? Or was it non running when you got it? You could try playing with the dizzy.. advance or retard it and see if she fires up.. sounds likt the same prob I had with and old 81 zx.. turned out (apparently... the guy I sold it to said he fixed it) to be a bad injector.. but you say yours all spray good... I know this sounds odd, but you could try pulling the two plugs out (on the cyl's that you're not sure of the wiring for the injectors) and see if it tries to run. Mine did! I pulled No 5 plug out, and cranked it over (by mistake actually...) and it actually ran! Not well, but it ran! (which was better than not running at all) I supose it could be an AFM issue as well.. check the conections to all the sensors too....

I am on the 'drive the thing, it's just a car!' boat on this one... Yesterday was driving around in the Z (3d day it's been on the road, a year and a half of work/blood/anger/money into it) and I am just enjoying the ride. At a red light, this hick lookin guy in a late 80's Suburban yells over "Hey man, lets see that thing go!" I yell back, "well it's kina tired and not running too good.." Hick guy says "Aww com on man! I wana see some smoke!" I say.. "well, I'll see what I can do.." The light goes green.... My passenger gives me a scared look... I rev it up, pop the clutch and smoke one back tire (I gota get an LSD!) through the intersection. As I cross the other side, I simultaniously hit a HUGE bump in the road, slam to second gear, and smoke the tires again. The mufler/exhast smashed hard (and I'm sure there were a few sparks!) and I shifted badly and ground 2nd a bit. I kept my foot in it for a few seconda longer, (man it sounds cool around 5000 rpm!) and made a 'drift' style right turn up the next street. I heard the guy go by behind me (didnt follow) hootin and hollering "yah f$^in right man!! Woohoo!!" with the thumb up in the air. And I smiled. My friend looked at me from the passenger seat like this.. (he knows how much time/money/ect I have in this car) and I just told him "Hey.. I built this thing to drive it and have fun. If I break it, I'll fix it and keep goin. Nothing lasts forever, and this car isn't really that great, even now after all the work I've done to it, so I might as well enjoy it! The look changed on my buddys face... He smiled now too... and he said "Cool man... lets go do that again!! Just my $.02 on the matter....
-
Yah, thats what I was thinkikng anyway. It is the same size line, as my 280 had FI and I am just pushing fuel back throught the stock lines. I will try to rig up some sort of pipe w/smaller id. to serve as a restriction before the rueturn line.... after I do the other nessesary work to the car of course! I'll let you know how it goes.. it might be next week before I can throw any money at it again though.. darn bills and credit piling up...
-
Even if it doesnt have the spaces cut for turn signals, I don't think it't be much to chop some out to make it fit the 280.. otherwise, it should mount up the same..
