  1. Dude, Im tellin ya! Do it! DO IT!!
  2. Yeaaghhhh!!! Dude.. rip those ugly bumpers off there!!! I forgot how much the stock ones stuck out! (I have a roll pan and 240 bumper on mine, just used to that look now..) That sucks about the brake lines. I feel your pain on this one man.. it's a PITA for me to do brake lines in the first place.. I just don't get along with brake fluid! I had my own 'discovery' whilst doing my brakes. I tried to get the bleeder screw out of the drivers side wheel cyl.... SNAP! some thoughtless fool had overtightened and half striped an INCH bleeder in there.. nice. For now, I have a 3/8" self taping screw in there ( I know I know.. but it works for now!) and it's holding... man that reminds me.. I got to get that fixed!
  3. Thats sort of what I have done on my 280. I could have traced the factory wires and spliced in I supose.. but I just ran a wire straight from the battery + (with a fuse of course) through into the cabin. I put my little rocker style switch down in the console (by the shifter) but you could put yours anywhere.. From the other side of the switch, I ran a wire back and through the right rear quarter panel/floor area (theres a rubber gromet there for the factory fuel pump/marker light wiring) and down to the + on my fuewl pump. Wire the - on the pump to a suitable ground underneth the car (I drilled a hole in the frame and used a self taping screw) and voila. Throw the switch, and you can hear the pump go. As for a 'keyless' start.. Just another switch/button with wires spliced into the factory starter wiring (off the key) should do that.. you'd still have to put the key in though and turn it to the 'on' position (to disable the wheel lock and turn on the acc's) but I don't see why it wouldnt work...
  4. Yah.. but I have all kinds of musik in there.. some heavy metal, rock, rap.. and it doesnt even look like it was disturbed! They just rooted through all my papers/change dish/ect. Im just pissed about the huge mess.. I know I had to clean the thing out, but now evrything is all over the place! I have had vehicles broken into in the past.. and ussually, nothing is left.. and if they cant get the stereo out, they smash it bastards.... guess I had a bit of luck going for me.. Its just funny how thigs work.. Yesterday I did my 'good deed' and stoped to help a guy in a wheel chair that had gone off a sidewalk into a ditch filled with brush and trees. (he was kind of stinky..he uh,... soiled himself.. but hey.. I guess in his situation, I would have too!) I turned around and helped him out (taking time out of my .5 hour lunch break) but thought 'well, he needed help so I'll give him some.." And I felt pretty good about that.. then that night... some dick thrashes my truck!!!! AHHHHGGG whats wrong with the world?!??
  5. An interesting proposal... I like it.. I'll have to do some digging... Ohhhh.. here comes the pain... Revenge may be a dish best served cold.. but who doesn't like ice cream right? I know I do.. some cold things can be very sweet.... heh heh.. the ploting begins...
  6. The best thing is to just keep the stock Datsun motor cause it fits good in there. Im kidding.. but it's all I've got for now! I have a buddy thats building a Mustang right now (351W..gona be nice) and have been considering a 302 myself.. My buddy wants an 87+ body kit, and we might go splits on a car if it's got a good 302/5 gear in it (I get motor trans, he gets the rest) and its a good deal... I'm looking at riping my 280 apart this winter again, and redoing some of the frame rails (I was learing to weld.. they're not that great! ) and the front frame section for sure, as it was done kinda crappy before I got the car last year. I'm thinking of rebuilding the Z motor.. swaping in a 5 speed, ect... then I got to thinking.. with the Z driveline out, it's the perfect time to V8! I dono what I'll do yet.. but if it turns out I V8 it, I'm wanting the same things you are. I dont want to cut my hood, and want a stock looking car. I'll see what hapens...
  7. Id go for the 3.0 V6 my self.. I had an 85 200sx a few years back, and was contemplating that swap... I have a 93 King cab with that motor, and it's while it's noting special (compleatly stock engine with 240K, stock intake/exhast, with an automatic.. yuck) the thing goes pretty good! Im sure the old 200sx's are quite a bit lighter than my truck... I'd say a rebuilt vg30 with good breating, coupled with rear diff ratios say from the 4cy model.. and a 5 speed it would be one quick little 200! JMO..
  8. So I go out to my truck this morning (going to work on a Saturday.. ech..) and as I unlock the drivers door, I look inside and stare in shock; EVRYTHING from the glove box (papers, bills, a booklet of pictures of my old cars, insurance, ect) has been thrown out on the passenger seat! And the flip up storage box I put in the center console is fliped up, with it's contents thrown evrywhere. The little built in pocket in front of the shifter, where I keep a bunch of small change has also been uprooted. WTF?!?!?!?? So first thing I do is bee line it to the back yard and check my portable garage that my Z is in... Luckily, it's hard to see from the front yard at night, so I doubt the buggers saw it.. I go to the other side of my truck, and find the passenger door was not locked and when the little bastards left, they didnt even close it fully; so the interior light has been on ALL night. Great. I get "that" chill.. look down.. and the CD player is still here?!? I look in the back.. all my CD's and tools are still here too! (ratchet/socket set, welding mask/gloves, ect) There are pennies, dimes and nickels tosed evrywhere (I ussed the last of my quarters/ect yesterday afternoon to get coffee) so I figure it must have been some stupid little bastard kid(s) looking for some money. I don't THINK I lost anything, but I'll have to go through all my cds, and make sure I still have an insurance slip in there. I'm just sooo pissed of... you know? Just the principal of the matter.. Man I hope they come back tonite.. If I catch the little bastard in the act, they are going to regret even LOOKING at my truck.
  9. I've found that most ppl who listen to Dabe Mathews are pretty inteligent... She probly knew it would be mistaken for "Dumb", but liked the irony of it.. and probly doesnt care anyway if someone laughs at it!
  10. Id say... the 76' 280z with the turbo 300zx motor. That will fly!
  11. I think you're in the right man.. heck.. I wouldnt have put up with someone like that for this long! My boss's yongest kid is turning out like that (14 going on 15) and expects me and the other employees to do what he says and fix his little dirt bike, and help him with whatever he's doing. (its summer, so he hangs out at the shop with his dad a lot. ) Even jokes that we (employees) are the 'slaves' and we have to do whatever he says. Yah... This kid has never had to figure anything out or do anything for himself, and has a terrible atitude. He is aware that he's pissing ppl off, but does it anyway! Man I just wana smack him sometime.. Only thing stoping me is, well, hes the boss's son and I'd probly get fired so... so I just deal with it. I told this kid too.. when he gets into high school next fall, he's gona get the crap kicked out of him if he doesn smarten up. Im gona laugh when it happens!
  12. Funny.. there's a somg by 'The tragicaly Hip' (canadian band.. you folks in the states might not now of them) that has a line it it; A generation so much dumber than it's parents.... came crashing through the window... As I read that post it just poped into my head.. strange.. And as for this: Desiderata: "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." I have always believed that one..
  13. I used to be into that stuf.. I just like building the real things now! I had some prety cool ones though... and Ive been looking for an S30 model.. to build as a replica of mine (75 280z) so when the day comes that I have to sell her.. or loose my licence I'll have something to remember it with!
  14. Ahh.. all good 'projects' are NEVER done! If I dont build this one (say it turns out to be a stolen car/insurance scam ) I'll find something else Im sure! V8 volvo maybe...
  15. uh, no.. 78 hood will not fit on an 82. 82 is ZX. pre 79 is Z. Totaly different body sheet metal. I'v seen this alot.. ppl tent to confuse the 280zx with a Z... not the same car.
  16. Im sure theres something for the front end.. dont know about the rear though.. can you do wleding/body work yourself? if so, the rear roll pan isnt that hard on an s30z to fab up.. Im not that good, and I did mine in about 4 days..
  17. well.. I feel stooopit now.. didnt even look at the date of the original post.. heh heh.. If the orginal poster is anything like me, 4 years ago is probly 20 cars ago! Might not even have finished this project!... We can hope thoug!..
  18. I have heard of snow machines that run backwards in order to reverse.. (less weight, as a reverse gear/drive system isnt needed) The engine will atually stop, and restart in the other direction! Basically, it makes it 'diesel' ..run off the heat of compresion rather than spark I supose.. or something.. As for 'reverse grinding' a cam... why? Could you not just get a marine cam and ignition for the engine you're wanting to use? Ive heard of ppl usin a 'marine' block to build a motor for their street car so Im sure it'd work the other way too...
  19. Just wanted to add something here.. I dont know what head I have, but on my 75 280z, there apears to be a block off plate where a mech/ fuel pump could go.. I didnt use it though. I ripped off my FI (literally just ripped it all out and made it go away! ) and instaled SU's from a 72. (E47 on the manifold I think..) I had to build 3 flat bars (1/4" thick) with holes in them to bolt the maifold on to my head. (just like the lowwer portion is held on with the exhast using big washers..same principal) The SU maifold used a diffrent bolt spaceing with fewer bolts (my FI manifold had two extra bolts) than my FI but it works just fine. I used a generic LOW presure fuel pump (aftermarket replacement for 74 260Z) to get the fuel from the tank to the engine bay. Just pluged it in to a stock 240Z fuel line to the carbs. I have had no problems yet, (unless I forget to turn on the switch! ) and have put 2000 miles on my car in the past 3 weeks set up like this.
  20. Guys.. this is a serious affliction.. I have even had a falling out with my mother and got booted out of the house due to 'automotive purchasing/repairing' things!! I cant stop.. I NEED to have a car or 4 to tinker with!!!
  21. Ok.. Im talking on MSN to my GM frined.. He says it should be the same motor as a Sunfire or grand am. After 98, it's the same motor but you need to use your (96) intake and exhast manifolds. A bit of help to if you're doing it yourself, he says when you pull the motor it is easier to pull the tranny with it... just remove the master cylinder from the booster and swing it out of the way. And he says it is 'plug and play' as far as FI/electrical. Hope this helps out.
  22. Well I'd say your best bet then would be to find a wrecked Cavi (or a known good J/Y motor) that is the same year and model.. they run millions of these things off at a time, so the same model year car should be identical.
  23. Well, I got to having a good look at my 'new' (to me) zx 2+2 today.. oh boy.. I didnt realize, but this thing only has 160 000 KMS on it! And it was a one owner car.. rad fluid is new, oil filter looks new, new exhast maifold to mufler, ect.. the list goes on. The seats apear to be white LEATHER! nice shape too.. power toys, steering, The t-tops DONT leak! (We had a huge storm here last night, and this morning the car was totally dry inside!) And the body is ORIGINAL!! Had a recent re-spray of factory 'racing brown' (eeww...) but all the panels are decent.. doors, rockers are still there, hatch, ect.... So I got to thinking... I want the 5 speed and diff (3.9 ratio) for my S30.. the rad and dizzy would be good spares.. hmm... what to do with the rest of this shell that needs attention to the frame.. but is pretty clean and straight.. hmmm.. and slightly underpowered with that 2.8 emisioned to death motor.. ...V8 swap? It hit me suddenly.. hey; this would be a nice cruiser.. could carry passengers, pop out the t-tops.. cruise in something thats still different looking, and with the addition of a few extra cylinders, it would at least be fairly quick, even with 3 ppl in it! I think I'll see about getting an ownership.. I just cant stop the madness... *EDIT* I forgot to add.. this will leave my present Z (75 280z) alone for now, meaning I'll have one to drive next year even if this V8 thing doesnt get done by then.. Also, this way I won't be in as much of a rush and can just do a good/clean job on the ZX. I'm thinkin of a quiet stock 305tpi/700r4 from a late 80's Craparo (they're evrywhere...cheep!) with A/C.. And leave my S30 as a somewhat original 'road racer' style Z.. slightly tuned L28 and 5 speed.. but more of a 'fly by the seat of your pants' kind of ride.. Just raw sports car.. whearas I could just calmly tour around in the 'softer' ZX 2+2.. and MAYBE let the girlfriend drive that one..
  24. Well on my 75 280, the roof apeared to come down to just near the end of the upper edge of the quarter window/drip rail. Then, it had a 'step notch' (I think thats the proper term for it ??) bent into the metal (edge of panel bent down at a 90*, then back straight leaving a slightly lowered 'step') and the quarter panel was laid over it and spot welded.. it seamed to have left a gap about 1/8" to 1/16 and that was where the lead was. I didnt fill the whole thing in, just a bit, and then ground smooth and bondo'd it.
  25. Yah. without it, I think the computer gets confused and will cause the symptoms you describe.
