That's just not fair. Incredible car.

I'm thinking more late-model, and I've been seriously impressed with the LS motors. I don't have the money now, I gotta wait a few more months still. My wife's still in school. Why not the Z32? That's actually where I'm leaning the most to.

so you guys know I've been mulling over some swaps for a while, that way when I get down to it I know exactly what I'm in for and can keep it to a decent budget. The 2 I've really been thinking about: Z32 NA Coupe with an LSx and T56 S14 Coupe with an LSx and T56 and maybe if I have the money: mid 90's RX7 (don't know the model name) with, you guessed it, and LSx and T56. I think there are swap kits for all 3, which one is the one with the least stress, roadblocks, etc? I've read that the S14 rear suspensions drop out and the Q45 rears drop right in, and also that the S14 rear will hold up to an LSx pretty well unless you really beat on 'em. I really am leaning towards later models, but I don't want to have the wiring and smog hassles (even though in WA I'm not sure that I'd have that much trouble) that come with later models. What do you guys think? I don't doubt my mechanical skills, I just don't want a serious headache again. I want to be able to ENJOY the car this time!!!!

What Are You Guys Going To Buy With Your Tax Return?
alsil replied to slownrusty's topic in Non Tech Board
You mean you can get money BACK from the government???? Haven't had that happen in a long time...... What I get for being contracted on my 2nd job - they pay me and I pay the taxes at the end of the year. Wind up paying a good amount every year (see Mike's post above). Businesses always gotta deal with this. At least I make the money during the year!!! -
Been there, spent too much money there......but at least we sold a good amount of CD's at the show to make up for it!!!! Back to the subject at hand..... I don't know if I feel sorry for her at all, but it is sad. For her to die of a drug OD (which is what everyone seems to think) after seeing her SON do that just is plain stupid. Most people learn from seeing the consequences personally.

I'd probably just drive the car stock until the motor grenaded anyway. I've heard they are nice motors, last a long time, and have decent power. I drove a '90 NA once and it was a fun ride. Who knows? Of course all that would have to wait for when my wife's done with college!

The funny thing is, I've been kicking around the idea of getting an NA Z32 coupe. Looks like they can be had on Craig's (usually with lots of miles, mind you) for $3000-4000. These cars are decently quick NA, but with all the miles on it, I'd be a little worried about something going wrong. So to remedy that, I'd grab an LS1 / T56 (or LS2) combo and plug it in. Now I get better gas mileage, very low miles, and reliablity up to 150k +. That could add $4000-5000. Then of course if the car needs brakes / suspension / etc done while I'm doing the swap, but stick with stock parts (which were all damned good anyway) we're talking another $1000-1500. Now of course I'm also assuming that the car was in good condition, the paint was nice, and the interior was pretty clean. Most owners of Z32's are pretty careful with 'em anyways, and I wouldn't even get close to buying one that was thrashed. So my total including the price of the car is max $10,500 and min $8000. So I get a car that is as fast as a new Vette, reliable as a Honda, handles like a world class sports car should, and is comfortable and affordable. Did I just talk myself into building a Z32???

So I was just thinking about this, and wondering if others have wondered the same thing. What ever happened to the stripped-down models of cars? Why do the new cars have to come with so much crap, and weigh like 3500-4000 lbs? With how reliable new cars are today, with 100k tune-ups, "limp mode", crumple zones, etc, you'd think that they would be able to make a car that was less than 3000 lbs, have 150-200hp, a 5-speed, maunal R+P, decent brakes, guages, no AC, CC, Power locks, windows, etc, and make it less than $15k. Hell I would buy one! Of course I'm not talking about a front-drive econobox wanna be sports-car. I'm talking about a car that is designed to be a sporty car from the beginning. Strip down a G35 to the basic package - engine, trans, brakes, manual everything but brakes, no AC, radio, and I'll take one. Just make sure it's under $20k. Why can't this happen? It doesn't cost that much to make it. Just a thought.

Besides the AOD this sounds a lot like my old car......

I put in a lot more than that. I have probably put in a couple of gallons in the last year. I wind up putting fluid in about once a week. I don't drive much, my commute is just 10 miles each way. I get gas like once a week or less usually. If the water pump seeps normally, that's weird. looks like the hole is under the snout, which is a bad place since gravity will make it come out eventually, even if the bearing is ok. I'm gonna have to give the dealer a call and see what I can do about this. I don't like the thought that I'm leaving puddles of antifreeze everywhere I go for cats and dogs to lick up and die. Not cool.

So I have an LS1 in my '02 Silverado (5.3L) - and I am constantly filling the overflow bottle. On these trucks, the overflow bottle is where the radiator cap is. So I try to find the leak, and sometimes I find a puddle under the truck directly under the oil pan. I figure it's dribbling down the outside of the block to the lowest point - the oil plug. but I can NEVER find any liquid on the motor. Even if the puddle is sitting there right after I stop the truck. it's dripping off the bottom of the oil pan, and that's as far up the block I can find the leak. Now the frustrating part is that it doesn't do it all the time. In fact I drove from San Jose to home (Vancouver, WA) and didnt' lose a drop. These are my ideas - - The water pump is going, and it's escaping through the vent hole. I can't FIND the vent hole, I'm guessing it's under the snout of the pulley. - A freeze plug is leaking? Does that even happen on LS motors? - A hose is leaking, although I can't find a single drop of moisture on the hoses. I helped a friend with his V6 truck a couple of months ago with a water pump that went bad, but my truck isn't acting the same. This would be a lot easier is the motor wasn't covered in tons of wires, covers, etc...... HELP! I have built tons of cars and don't have an issue for fixing anything - as long as I can find the problem!

Yea I think I've owned 10 240z's total. I had a few others that served as donors or never got driven.....of course they were removed / sold by request of my wife. I'd probably have 5-6 cars at a time if she didn't say anything!!!! Don't get me wrong, she's helped with the cars, hell she bought the '73 for me when I started an LT1 / T56 swap back in '95.....
-
Which one? 1970 240z (1990) - $600 1971 240z (1992) - $300 (just a shell, the '70 was totally rusted out) 1972 240z (1992) - $200 (parts car) 1973 240z (1995) - $500 1971 240z (1998) - $750 1971 240z (2000) - $500 (shell, became my SBF swap) *might have forgot one or two* Of course if I had to tally the money I spent AFTER buying them, I've probably spent enough to buy a house in the Bay Area outright

On www.classic-celica.com forums there is a post that has the whole list of Toyota motors, with displacements, output, weight, etc. I don't think there's dims, but there's another post there that has them. One of the members dropped a 2rz into his '78 I think, look under "Projects". I'd post a link but my work filters sites and that's one of them for some odd reason. Because of the deep oil pan, it would have to be pushed as close to the firewall as possible, but I don't see it being taller than an L-series motor, especially with the intake not going over the valve cover. One company makes an intake that comes out the front, kind of like a shorter L28 intake. Also check out http://www.customtacos.com/forum/ Hope that helps.

Yea we get those in Portland every few years.......a couple of years ago we got a foot of snow and a couple of inches of ice on top of it. It was interesting getting the snow / ice off my wife's car!!!! Hasn't got anywhere near as bad since, we've had some snow recently, but on the Gresham side it gets pretty icy still every winter. If you're in it, be careful!!!!

I've been around here a while, but since I haven't had a Z since '03 (when I sold it for a much better cause, my son) I don't post a ton. I plan to have another Z sometime soon, just being careful about the $$$ output.....you know how it goes, one mod leads to 5 others......
-
So Tannji, how far have you got on the 2rz swap? Ran across this thread again and was wondering how it worked out. Might have a chance to start a project next year so I'm still fishing. I could go: 302 / T5 again LS2 / T56 or 2rz / 5 speed. Thing is about this swap, I bet the motor / trans is lighter than even the SBF swap (the SBF + T5 weighs less than the fully dressed L24 ) so suspension wise you'd have to cut a full coil out of the front springs (I had to cut 1/2 a coil for the SBF in the front) just to get it to sit flat. Plus since the motor is shorter it would fit behind the crossmember so the weight would be more centered. Got me thinking, but then I don't have any money at the moment, good thing dreaming is free......

Oh my god.....that's just sad. Sick and sad.

Yea, I have an '02 Silverado, same thing. The stock head unit is actually a pretty nice unit, but the speakers are crap. it's pretty easy to peak them out, bass response sucks. One of these days I'll replace them, but so far they have held up.... I have an MP3 player too, and for long trips I've been using the transmitter type of interface. It works OK, and sounds OK, but not great. If you get in an area with a station that's even half way weak, it starts to break up and goes in and out. I have to keep switching stations (I can use 88.1, 3,5, and 7 on mine) until I find a clear one. I know there are a few interfaces through the AUX channel, one of these days I gotta just pick it up. They sell it at Fry's too, and it just plugs in. It's like $129 or something though.....and that's why I still use the transmitter! Worst part of the the transmitter is that is uses those stupid expensive camera batteries.....like $7-8 a POP!!!!

This is what I did on my car: I removed the Air Pump and the AC. That left it with just the PS pump, alt, crank, Water Pump, tensioner. I then just tooka piece of string and following the stock pattern, found out how long of a belt I needed, and went down to the parts store and found one. So remove in pairs on one side, so that the direction of the belt stays the same. So if you removed all 3, put the PS pump eliminator idler from Ford MS. Then you'll be able to use the same serp. belt and not have to rethink the whole setup. They also make an AC eliminator and Air Pump eliminator, depening on what you take off. Hope that helps.
