every state has different laws and some have different laws for different areas.carson valley(reno.carson city, mindon)have very tough smog laws-like no max repair limit for smoking engines.denver has problems too.the bay area will soon be bar 97-dyno smogs .california will be ok as long as they dont change the pre73 exemption.msot of the lobbying to keep pre 73 cars exempt comes from sema.

nice job.when i get some bucks i want to put a mazda 20b twin turbo in mine.but i loke the inline 6 because of engine smoothness.why does bmw keep making straight 6?cause its smooth.i would like to try a late model m3 motor too.
-
i have a free l28 -probably with low miles if yuo want ot come to modesto to get it.check compression before tearing motor down.then take pan off.or just skip to new motor idea.a couple of trips to high boost shouldnt have taken motor out unless something was going wrong anyway.you just speeded up the aging process.

Nice alternative motor for an early Zcar!!
randy 77zt replied to RacerX's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
engine was a good engine wasted in a crummy car.these engine rev high and smooth.i would use the 3.0 taurus version though.even stock in a light early z car would run good as the fords they were hooked to weighed 3000 lbs or more. -
i am a ford dealer tech-these things didnt work cause oem radiator was made smaller to put intercooler beside it.the engine weight is light because block is small and heads were aluminum.if you put some kind of good head gaskit on it and a stud kit for the heads plus made sure it ran cool it should be okay.a t5 trans will bolt on .oem 5 speed was made by mazda and has a huge ratio spread for a 3.08 rear.engine makes lots of torque but doesnt like to rev much past 5500 rpm.same engine as many other fords-wind stars.mustangs, tbirds, taurus

i dont know about canada but i am a smog tech in california so i can tell you about what i did to smog my 77z/81zxt .basically made sure everything that came on the zxt motor still working like the egr system.with the buick if you put a high flow cat where oem cat was and hook up the evap cannister it should work fine.just check out your local laws first before starting project.in ca swaps are legal if you update the engine and engine was certified for use in california.

Brake fade with new 4x4 4 piston front calipers
randy 77zt replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
the stock rotors wont take this abuse with out warping-i have done it on sears point.the 4 piston calipers help but will fade unless you run carbotech or porterfield race pads and then the rotors wont last.get bigger brakes with vented rotors. -
i work as a tech for a ford dealer.the late model explorer power rack should work.mounting bolts are straight up .if you weld a piece of steel plate to bottem of crossmember for rack to bolt to you will only have to hook up steering linkage.then get some borgeson steering joints for input shaft.rack is 2.75 turns lock to lock.

i run a 82 zx na datsun trans behind my 81 zxt engine in my 77.the 82 or 83 trans had best ratios for my uses-close 1st to 4th and better 5th.a t5 shifts like a truck compared to a nissan trans.i use my car for driver schools at sears point and thunderhill so i need close ratios.if i beef up the turbo engine much i have a t5 zxt bellhousing i will put a world class t5 behind.
-
if you have the bucks just get a world class close ratio t5 from summit.even v8 ford t5 had a funky 1st gear so mustang could run a 3.08 rear.if you want to convert a v8 to to wc close ratio is 6 or 700 bucks plus installation-so in the end the $1100 from summit for all new trans is a deal.

found an intake manifold with no egr for those of you building turbo/efi motors.came off of a 1980 zx with calif/low altitude emissions.some people say that only intake with no egr is a 1975 z 49 state but you never know what will pop up at pick&pull if you keep you eyes open.
-
sean-the zxt you have has a 85 amp alt from factory with ir from factory.thats is what i run on my car and it runs a/c and headlights at same time no problem.the gm system would be your best bet to run a big stereo system though.DO NOT buy reman alternators from kragen, pep boys and those kind of places unless you want to change them alot.
-
i heard those are 550cc -came off of injected 13b .you need to machine injector holes in manifold and build a new fuel rail for o-ring style injectors.you can get blank aluminum fuel rail and have it machined.these are like common injectors used in new cars that dont use the hose on top.i tried stuffing a oring injector in to oem zxt manifold and injector hole wasnt big enough.goto www.sdsefi and they have plans online for a fuel rail.

my car is a 77 with a 81zxt engine.it has a california swap sticker in the door frame.swap is legal but it limits mods to engine.i dont like the zxt ecm's-i have burned out 3 in 5years.i have a smog license and work as a tech in a ford dealership.california has somthing called .they send about 10% of renewals to test only stations and pick on older cars this way.i am probably going to goto a aftermarkit efi and use the rpm activated switch function to trigger the egr at rpms that dyno tests at.test is run at 15 and 25 mph.the 81 to 83 zxt ecms dont use a check engine light so the test only stations wont look to see what ecm is running the car.basically all you need is functioning egr,the fuel tank evap canister hooked up and a cat converter.i have 2 exhaust tail pipe systems -1 for offroad? use and 1 for smog tests.you could probably run a 3" random technology low restriction cat on turbo car ok.

problem with auto trans is no engine braking.if you had real big bucks you could get a x-trac or quaffe sequential trans-that is what you can shift clutch-less.these are the trans in the wrc rally cars.trans are built like a motorcycle trans-it shifts with dog rings.

fyi -the january 2002 issue of popular hot rodding has an article about a 1300 hp twin turbo 89 vette.car is a daily driver and looks stock.

Looking for sources for Differential Coolers/ Pumps...
randy 77zt replied to Mikelly's topic in Drivetrain
could try synthetic oil too-like redline.corvettes dont come with oil coolers cause they use mobil 1. -
idle jets are plugged in the dgv's.closing the choke pulls fuel from main jets down the booster venturi.best to get a couple of rebuild kits and a gallon of carb dip & rebild carbs.dgv's are good carb if you can get them jetted correctly.there is no carb that is jetted perfect from box.best carbs on a z are the 70 to 72 round tops.my old engine in my 77 280 was pretty quick after putting in new injectors, replacing injector plugs, gutting cat convertor, recurving distributor, putting on 2.5" tail pipe & muffler.

For those of us with urethane bushings...
randy 77zt replied to BLKMGK's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i have been using 3m silicon paste on mine.it is clear and doesnt seem to attract dirt.i have been using this stuff on the explorer sway bar bushings at work without any comebacks. -
there is a company called winsor that sells replacment connectors for repair of harnesses.also some gm dealers have injector plugs with about 6" of wire on them.the best injector plugs have a wire you press to release them -i got an injector harness from a ford contour that had some of these.

Anyone Ever Warped Their Solid Rear Rotors?
randy 77zt replied to 260DET's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i have the early toy 4x4 calipers on front with oem rotors and i warped mine at thunderhill.this same set up with drilled rotors and carbotech pads didnt warp.but fluid got hot and got a bubble in it so set up is at %110 capacity on track.i am switching to 84 300 zx front rotors drilled with 88 toy 4x4 calipers and porterfield pads for track use next week .i have a 2 day event at thunderhill dec 15&16.i will post results of brake use when i get back.what i am looking for is no warpage and no maintenence work when i get home except for pad switch to street pads when i put street tires back on. -
i would not but abs into a z unless it cycled faster than the units that are found on american cars.as far as hooking up the traction control on a dtafast unit or aem unit look on late model cars in junk yards for ideas or parts.since i service abs systems at work i know what parts i can use from work to complete the traction control inputs.all the friends that have used abs in cars at track drivers schools dont like it but the newer bmw's & porsches probably have a better(mucho bucks) abs controller.
-
i think they offer the most features for the money.if you need any hall effect wheel speed sensors for traction control email me-and excitor rings too.the traction control would be cool to try in the rain.

get a big fish scale like they use for marlin down in cabo
