  1. I recently rebuilt my '82 l28et for my '77 and am having oil pump issues now. The car idles fine but with cold oil my mechanical only sees around 20 psi and as it warms it goes down to 12-15 like it use to. My worry worry is that with cold oil the car use to see 45-50 psi at idle and increase with revs to 60 or so. With revs the pressure never goes above 20 psi. I installed the pump and shaft like the "how to rebuild your datsun OHC" book states but ran into a problem with the oil squirt hole not lining up with the punch mark on the pump shaft gear. With the marks lined up the dizzy shaft end isn't even close to being lined up. When I line the tang of the dizzy side up to where it needs to be the marks on the shaft and pump housing no longer line up. The pump is off an '83 turbo motor where as the shaft is from the '82 motor. I don't see how the shaft mark needs to be lined up with the pump housing since the shaft just spins along with the motor but maybe I'm wrong in this thinking. I am planning on getting a different gauge to see if maybe my gauge is faulty. Taking the oil cap off I do see oil squirting up to the cam but I am not sure if it is a sufficient amount. Any ideas on what may be causing my lack of oil pressure. Oh and the oil pick up tube is free and clear from debris as well. Thanks guys, Kevin
  2. Right click on the image you want to see then scroll down and click on open image in new window.
  3. I'm in for a quarter window "engineered to be feared" decal. Same size you had on your car would be preferred if its still available. Thanks,
  4. I have a turbo manifold from a '83 280zx. Asking 100+ shipping if your still looking.
  5. I suppose that I now have the most expensive front cover you can get in stock form lol. Thanks for the book tips, I'll have to grab one. As for the parts that are actually ok they will be in the sale section if people are looking for turbo parts (minus the block and head of course). As always thanks for your guys help
  6. No offense taken, I was just looking for some advise about the motor not really the events leading up to me having two broken ones haha. Is there a good engine rebuild book somewhere that will help me out since I have never rebuilt a motor before. Thanks again for your replys
  7. it had the knock on initial start up. I have no clue when the damage occured as I am pretty sure it was damaged when it was sold to me. And this isnt intended as a sob story just wanted to know what people do on here and if any of this stuff would be salvageable. Also to watch out when buying because I am sure I'm not the first guy to buy something and have this happen. As for the P79 head does it perform very well as compared to the P90 and is it a direct swap that will still retain the turbo exhaust since I believe the P79 has circular ports and not square?
  8. Yea I'm positive the intake was cleaned and repainted before I installed it onto the motor. I used the n42 I had running on my other motor.
  9. Im seeking advise on what my options are regarding my car. So I have a '77 280 that I initially swapped a '82 l28et and MSnS into it but I blew a head gasket and when I tried to get the motor apart all the bolts on the front cover and oil pump broke and were seized, so there was not any easy way for me to take the motor apart and fix it. I found a '83 l28et for sale on here from username "monster reem" and we agreed on a price of $650 for just the motor. It was advertised as a perfect working condition motor pulled from a running car. This being the main reason I purchased it since I hadnt the time to rebuild mine. Over the summer I worked as an intern at Ford Motor Company which made it impossible to work on my car. So I bought the motor and took it home then headed back to Michigan. At the conclusion of my internship I was able to pull my motor and drop in the new one in one day but upon starting the engine it had a severe knock. I emailed "monster reem" and told him about it the fact that this motor had to be hurt before I purchased it. I asked him if it was possible to get my money back but he refused claiming it was sold as is and I must have hurt the motor and am just trying to get my money back. Here are some pictures of the motor after I took it back out and took it apart to try and see how bad the damage is. So i guess my main question now is where (if anywhere) can I go from here. I'm finishing up school and getting my degree in mechanical engineering this December and also getting married in April so money is extremely tight. The head is destroyed I'm assuming and I know piston 3 is done as well. I'm hoping there will be a decent way to get some of my money back so I don't have to part out my car to get money until i graduate and get a job. Thanks guys.
  10. Well I ended up finding another motor for a decent price so I picked it up with the entension of fixing my current motor and building up the bottom end. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys.
  11. So I went to take off the front engine cover and three bolts holding the cover snapped and one of the 4 holding the oil pump on snapped . Any ideas on how to get the oil pump out or the broken bolt out so I can get the oil pump out to try and get the front cover off.?
  12. I am in the process of installing a new head gasket and need some help. I put the wood wedge to keep the timing chain in place but now when I put the cam sprocket into the chain it is about 1 maybe 1.5 cm to low to allow me to re-bolt it to the cam shaft. I am assuming the chain tensioner has pulled some of the chain down. How do I get the tensioner to compress where I can get the extra little room to bolt the cam sprocket back to the cam. I am hoping I will not have to pull the front of the motor off but if that's the only way to fix it how do I lock the motor enough to take the crank pulley bolt off? Is it reverse threads? I can't find any information in my repair manual to help me out.
  13. could have been the new 3.5L GTDI motor, which is twin turbo'd and puts down around 365 hp in the SHO taurus but is also used in the F-150.
  14. Made the trip home over the weekend and was able to get the car to start and run. So I warmed it up and then performed a compression test, with the following results. Cyl # ; Compression 1 : 40 2 : 98 3 : 104 4 : 107 5 : 103 6 : 101 So i went ahead and ordered a head gasket but I won't be able to work on the car until July. Thanks for your guys help and suggestions
  15. well guys it looks like its my turn for some bad luck. I cant do a compression test yet since the car will not start now. Seems like either some fuses are blown or the starter is done. Won't be able to check on it until this weekend but hopefully I will make some progress. Thanks for the suggestions.
  16. Ok, thanks for the tip. I will check on it
  17. Can the manifold warp quickly and unexpected. What I mean is the car was being driven and my brother got into some boost and all the sudden the sound appeared. Could the manifold have warped that quickly. I will check on it though. thanks for the suggestion
  18. Here is a picture of the gasket that came off the car. This had me pretty confident that the problem would be solved by the new gasket but it wasn't.
  19. That was my first thought as well, My brother took the exhaust manifold off yesterday and replaced the gasket and that video was shot after the new gasket was installed. I know the manifold is cast iron how brittle are they. Is is possible the manifold is cracked. Once again I havent had a chance to personally look at the car being in Michigan for the summer.
  20. Hey guys I need some help. Like the title says I am having a weird noise coming from the front of the motor. I am embeding a video of it but just in case it doesn't embed properly I will try and explain. First off the motor is an '82 l28et with around 125k on it. I am running 440cc injectors and 15psi with MS1 controlling it. IMG_00381.mov The sound to me sounded like a blown header gasket, my brother replaced the gasket and the sound still persists. Its very loud like a bunch of air is escaping the motor. If you put your hand right behind the dizzy you can feel a rush of air (possibly exhaust given the warmness of the air). My second thought was that the head gasket popped. I'm still thinking this is the reason for the sound, however there is no coolant coming from the spark plug when I pulled them and there is no bubbles in the coolant system as well as no smoke coming from the tailpipe. Im stumped and not wanting to tear into the motor just to find the head gasket is fine and then be back at square one. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks for your help.
  21. thanks man, but no thats about the only thing i didn't do. Bought the car as a shell mostly because of the nice body and flat black paint was done pretty well.
  22. Here are some pictures of the car in its present state. Its running 15 #'s right now but I did try 18 to see how it felt. But i'm hoping to get it dyno'd soon to see what power it has. Then i will start working on my cobra since turbos are on my mind it will be getting a built teksid along with a single turbo.
