The angularity is of prime importance here. And as opined, there may indeed be no strength advantage between the two when considered against zero angularity. During the period that I investigated the use of CV joints ('88), I was told on more than one occasion that under high torque loads, the U-joint is pretty reliable up to about 7 degrees mismatch. I was also told that the CV joint (the tripod design in particular) was reliable for about twice that angle. The typical caged ball design (popular with the German autos) is good well beyond 20 degrees. This is why I was experimenting with the German design when I found out the Turbo ZX shafts were nearly "bolt on". The 911 joints I was going to use were good up to over 400ft/lbs of torque, and the 930 joints have held up to 800lb/ft of torque. I have only recently began looking into these again mainly because of their simplicity in adapter plates and their compact design eliminates sway bar/joint interference that I've found is on my application.

I have to agree with Stony. I raised my R200 high enough (had to dimple the subframe crossmember over the back of the diff for clearance) so that axles were in optimal geometric position. Squat was included in the final positioning so that the axles were just slightly drooping leaving the differential when the car was at rest. This way, under light load the axles were straight, and under heavy acceleration, they were only slightly raised upward out of the differential. I still broke the joints. Then I switched to the CV jointed axles and never broke another in 10 years.

I've not used the OEM rod ends, but I do know that there should be about 4" of threaded rod (but, some ends may be longer than others, i.e. the Mustang vs the T-bird) available. On mine, I cut 2" of threaded rod off each side, which still left about 2" of threaded rod to work with.

I think I like the new site. I've not had time to play with it yet, but like BLKMGK said, I miss the old "Today's active topics" list. At work I could have it pulled up all the time and chime in whenever I thought I could help. The biggest thing I miss is the visibility of the first few lines of the latest postings. I could usually get an idea real fast if this was something that I could contribute to or not. Now I will need to open each topic to read the last postings (unless I'm not up to speed with the new features). And a work I won't have time to do this. Anyway, the site has a good look to it.

My SBF is NOT producing that kind of power, but I can tell you that the SBF WILL fit easily. If he has lots of aluminum on the motor (heads, intake, water pump, flywheel, etc) the actual weight on the front axle will be less than with the OEM Datsun L6. The 5 speed he has will fit (T-5 or T-56), and the R200 Datsun differential with the ZX turbos halfshafts should hold up depending on what he is doing with the car, and the tires. Typical Z weights go from 2300-2700 depending on powerplant and model of Z (the earlier ones where on the lighter end of this range).

I remember a test (back in '75) for Air Traffic Control that I took. It was taking 3 dimensional objects and "unfolding them" into a 2 dimensional piece and deciding what the final flat (2D) piece would look like. Speed was important and it was disigned to see just how far through the series of increasing complexity you could go (I don't think it was ever intented that anyone be able to complete the entire test in the alloted time)

As per the title of your post, you shouldn't have any trouble with the R200. You did ask, in the body of your post, about the half shafts too. They will most likely be the weak link. A swap to the turbo CV jointed shafts from a 280ZX will be a prudent move to prevent the eventual failure of the U-jointed ones (if you've not already done this).

Just for argument sake, I wonder how much horsepower the conventional pump uses if compared to the same rpm as the electric pump. I'm kinda with Jim on this. Work is work. For the same amount of fluid moved, the two should be close. Perhaps the CSI pump is extremely efficient, but this wouldn't explain a 4000% improvement in efficiency, would it? I used to have a severely under driven conventional pump that freed up a lot of power, but it was marginal at cooling this way. Finally I put a larger crank pulley on the car and have never had any more problems.

These "forks" are made in different sizes. I would hazard a guess that the one you have is too wide (the gap) for your particular application. Try a smaller (more narrow) one. "left loosy" is correct (if that means conventional right-hand threads).

There will be no difference. Any front Z bar will fit all Zs. The aftermarket rear Z bar (mounted from behind the differential should fit all Zs, and the OEM rear bar should do the same (but I think some early 240s did not have provisions for a rear bar?). I may be interested in purchasing one of your aftermarket rear bars if you have an extra one you don't need.

Building codes vary by region. Your most wise move is to contact the building inspector for your city or area and query him (or her) on this matter.

Are the rear bars the OEM mounted type, or are they an aftermarket design that bolts onto the rear uprights? The appearance of the two is quite different. ___/ for the aftermarket upright mounted verses /______ for the OEM type.

It's not sounding bonkers at all. The Ford 9" pumpkin has been modified like this to make an IRS version of it already, although not for the Z car.

Well, I think it was Benjamin Franklin that (paraphased here) said any country willing to give up it's liberties and rights doesn't deserve any. I'm sure this gun law was enacted well before 9-11, but I can guarantee you that the "sky is falling" mentality (following 9-11) has got Washingtion planning many more restrictions on our civil liberties, and our flag toting public will just watch it happen in ignorance to what kind of message this sends back as feedback. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and our government is incrementally headed in that direction, and we are following like sheep to slaughter. It may take a few decades, but it's coming. Man, I guess this situation has me worked up worse than I thought. Take care buddy.

I'm not sure what to say, except that with what little you've written, I can definitely empathize with your situation. The Feds define the term "piling on". I just hope I never get involved in the judicial system (i.e. in a situation in which I am innocent of a charged crime). My attitude alone will convict me whether I did anything wrong or not.
