  1. Sorry! I had tried the search earlier on a different topic and it wasn't working so I figured it just didn't work. I don't want to get anyone pissed off, so from now on, I will always try the search first and then ask questions. Thanks!
  2. mas280: I am going with the auto. Faster shifts and the wife can drive it. I know I shouldn't let my wife drive it but if she can she will be more agreeable to the time I will be spending on the swap!
  3. Guys, I was looking at "Briguy280Z" pics and I am intrigued by the motor mount crossmember he made. Does anyone know if this type of mounting is attached to anything other then the frame rails? If it is only attached to the frame rails can the stock frame rails handle the weight and torque of the LS1 motor? link to his pics: http://fp2k.redshift.com/briguy280z/ Thanks!
  4. You can see some pics of my motor here: http://www.classicZcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?ppuser=4628&cat=500
  5. I know that the headers will work but what are the other options if you don't want headers? 1. Will the corvette LS1 or Z06 manifolds offer more clearance? See them here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2464625344 2. How about the Hummer H2 Manifolds? See them here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33632&item=2465438024 I told you I was going to bug you guys with lots of questions and you let me join anyway! Thanks!
  6. Well I picked up the motor yesterday. 300 miles drive round trip. I had a ear to ear smile on my face the whole ride home. I couldn't stop looking in the rear view mirror to admire it. Now that I am actually looking at an LS1 up close, out of a car, I can see some areas of clearance concerns. Boy those stock exhaust manifold flanges are big. Are the Corvette exhaust manifolds a possibility for more clearance? Has anyone tried them? I reallly didn't want the extra noise of headers but I may have to deal with it. I have some pics of the motor. How do I post them??[/img]
  7. WOW Mike, Low elevens! That's great! I can't wait to see the videos. I bet you will get into the 10's soon. Port the MAS & throttle body, change the valve springs and roller rockers, reprogram the ECM, etc. Or just a 100HP shot of NOS will do the trick! Congrats!
  8. Phantom, That sounds great. It's reassuring to know that the car is staying reliable. I can't wait to start my swap. Do you have any pics of your car in the install process? Particularly the motor mounts and trans mount. I would really like to see how the John's cars kit looks. I am leaning towards going with his kit but I would really like to keep the stock exhaust manifolds and the stock A/C compressor.
  9. Mas280, Great numbers for the first runs. Beat your old Lt1 numbers the first time out. Congrats! What mods have been done to the LS1 besides the headers and the air intake? What is the ratio of the rear? Thanks!
  10. I found this link to a project 240Z ls1 swap. scroll down until you see the blue 240Z. http://www.hpsalvage.com/projects.htm Anyone know this guy or the car? Is he on the list? Another LS1 Z car swap. Wow!
  11. I don't recall which coating was used. I think it was called the sterling but I really don't remember. I had it done in 1999 and I have not seen any flaking. I do remember that the headers cost like $200 for both of them. Good Luck!
  12. I did some research on LS1tech.com and I found out that indeed GM did use some LS6 blocks in place of LS1 blocks in some 2001 and 2002 F body cars. In 2001 there were about 15% of the f Bodies that came with LS6 blocks and in 2002 about 25% had the LS6 block. You can tell the LS6 block by it's casting number on the block. The block is stamped "12561168" It seems that the LS6 bare block was used to build the LS1's as there was a shortgage of LS1 blocks. The difference in the blocks are: LS1 blocks have a 28.5 mm ventilation hole drilled through the center of all 5 bulkheads, close to the crank, for bay-to-bay breathing. LS6's have a much larger cast in holes (or "cast-in hone-over hole travel vent window" in GM talk) through the 2,3, and 4 bulkheads towards the bottom of the cylinder bores on both sides. According to GM, the 2,3, and 4 bulheads are the only ones that have an affect on bay-to-bay breathing. This change created 87% more ventilation over the LS1 block and less pumping loss at high RPM's. No official HP gains were reported, but the end factor is that the LS6 blocks durability was increased drastically over the LS1 block." The blocks are also cast using a different process. (all information taken from GMHTP July 2003 pg. 11 and summarized.) Also, all 2001 and up LS1's came with the LS6 intake manifold. (better flow) The motor I am buying has the LS6 block for what it's worth. I can't wait to get it home.
  13. Well Guys I did it. I found a motor and trans for my LS1 swap. It is from a 2002 Camaro SS with 20K miles on it that was wrecked in the rear. I sent a deposit for it today and I will go and pick it up next week. I can't wait to get it home and start the planning stages of the swap. This swap will be completed in time for the 2005 National Z car convention which if all goes well will be in New York next year. I am sure that I will be here picking your brains for all the info I need to make this swap a reality. Thanks for all of the help so far. I can't wait to fell the power of an LS1 240Z. I plan to fully document the swap and post it on the internet. To see my car as it is now go to: http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=3083&ppuser=4628
  14. I had my 510 V-8's headers, intake manifold and valve covers Jet hot coated a few years ago. They have a great product. I can't give any firm numbers but the under hood temps were drastically reduced. The headers used to get so hot they would glow red. Now they are much cooler. You can see pics here: http://britishv8.org/swaps/510v8.htm It also looks great. The headers were very rusty looking when I sent them in to be done.
  15. I saw a motor on eBay that advertises that a 2002 Camaro SS LS1 came with an LS6 block and that 25% of the LS1's came with that block. Is this true? Does anyone know the block numbers of the LS6 blocks to verify this? Other than the bulkhead windows in the LS6 block are there any differences or advantages between the LS1 and LS6 blocks? Thanks!
  16. The JTR manual says that the Z's motor is offset to the passenger side by approx. 1 inch and because of this they use spacers to place the motor more to the passenger side. To those of you that have done the LS1 swap, did you also offset your motor to the passenger side? Thanks!
  17. As I have stated before I really want to put a 6 speed LS1 into my 240Z. I had bought a 2001 Camaro LS1 and 6 speed and I had it stored at a friends shop. He kept on bugging me to sell it to him for his jeep and since I wasn't ready to do the swap yet I sold it to him. I guess seeing it sitting in the corner of his shop got him motivated to start and now he is nearly finished. So much for having the drivetrain for my Z and it was such a good deal . Anyway, I have a line on a 1999 LS1 with an auto trans. for a good price and I was wondering what I would need to do to change the trans to a 6 Speed. I know I will need the 6 speed trans. with bellhousing, clutch,pp, t/o bearing, flywheel, slave cylinder. I guess the pilot bearing too. Will I need a wiring harness from a 6 speed too? Will the starter from the auto work with the flywheel. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated. I really like to shift the car otherwise I would conside the Auto. Can anyone convince me otherwise? I plan on some track/autox use and weekend cruiser. TIA
  18. Not exactly. It would depend on motor placement as Mike made his own mounts and John's cars makes different mounts as did others. If you don't position the motor in almost the exact location you might have clearance issues.
  19. How do you do it so fast? Let me guess. No Kids, No Wife. That must be it. I can't believe you got it together in less than 30 days. Do you want to fly out here and do mine? Now that you have done one we could probably do mine in a week. I'll feed you steak and Lobster every day, all the beer you can drink and a nice place to stay. All kidding aside, Congrats! I can't wait to see the track numbers.
  20. I did my own wiring when I swapped the V-8 into my 1972 510. I am not an engineer type. It was not hard. There are only like 10 wires that go to the motor if you are not going with fuel injection. If you use an alternator with internal regulator you can get rid of a bunch of wires too. I read the JTR manual and it is very straight forward. It tells you which wires to remove and what goes where. Don't be afraid to try it yourself. If you can read a manual and take your time you can do it. If I can do it anyone can.
  21. mas280: thanks! I won't start mine til the fall. I don't want to take apart the car and not get to enjoy it all summer. I know it will take me longer than you to complete it. I will have to just deal with 200hp until then.
  22. Wow! It's looking great. If you have to pull the motor again please take some detailed photos of the motor mounts. Thanks
  23. Looks great! Man are you in a hurry! I thought you were going to wait a while. Did you sell the LT1? I hope you will document the swap for all of us who plan to follow! Can you post some pics of the motor mounts you made? Do you plan to run A/C? Will you mount the alternator in the stock location? I can't wait to start mine.
  24. I don't think you can do a clean swap for 5-6 K. Figure $3500-$4500 for the motor, trans, computer, wiring harness, accessories, driveshaft, etc. Another $1500 for the engine mount kit, trans mount, headers, tach recalibration, speedo drive signal converter, etc. next you need a cooling system, a fuel system, an exhaust system, upgrade the brakes, etc. etc. More like $10k if you want it clean and done right!
  25. Keep in mind they won't sell just the headers. He states that you must buy his mounts and manual in order to be able to purchase any other items for this swap.
