  1. I must be confused. By run #6 the car was still worse off than the base line in terms of drag and lift.

I was pretty surprised that almost everything we did had some positive effect, some just more than others. Drag being fairly constant was also a big surprise. I thought the whaletail and wing would eat a lot of hp, but that's not the case.

  2. I've obtained most of my information from wikipedia, so take this with a grain of salt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_coefficient

    Some values provided for a 280zx http://www.mayfco.com/nissan.htm

    Anyway, I needed some perspective.

The test mule baseline gave a CdA ft² value of 8.71 putting us in line with some boats! (92 Crown Vic, 91 LeSabre) and by run #18 you had it down to 7.33 (a little better than a 01 Civic).

  3. "Some overhaul shops claim beneficial cooling effects of black paint on their engine. The theory is that black is a better emitter of infrared (heat) energy. A hot engine in a cold surrounding, radiates energy from the hot object to the cold. The amount of radiant cooling is (generally) dependent upon the temperature of the emitter (engine) and how efficient the engine is at radiating energy -- its emissivity. This derives from Kirchoff's Law where good absorbers are also good emitters. Since black is a good absorber of energy (that's why it's black) it's also a good emitter. A black object emits more radiant energy (cools faster) than a white or gold object that emits less radiant energy per unit of time. Painting an engine black increases the amount of radiant energy emitted by the hot engine to its colder surroundings and it will be cooler than a non-black engine.

There is a fallacy to the above argument. Most heat energy emitted by the engine is in the invisible infrared portion of the spectrum. What appears to us as black, white, red, or green in the visible spectrum is not what we would see in the infrared spectrum. Any color of paint that uses organic (non-metallic) pigments is black in the infrared spectrum. For example, white paint emits 90-95% depending upon pigment type. Black emits 96%, blue 94%, green 92% and red 91%. The best emissivity surface coating is acetylene soot at 97%. Painting an engine increases radiant cooling but the color of the paint doesn't.

  4. Awesome, thanks everybody for the help.

I've found several z's in the wrecking yard, all of them had the hardline rusted to the piece that connects it to the flex line, and wound up getting a kink before they would budge.

Thanks for all the detail, I really appreciate the part numbers and links. I'll try the DIY method first and if/when I get frustrated I'll probably call classictube.

Edit: Any reason not to run copper hardlines? I think this would look pretty cool.

  5. My clutch hardline was crushed during my swap. I'd really like to replace it with maybe a braided line, but I'm not opposed to hardline. Anybody have an easy solution for this? In the archives somebody mentioned that the autoparts store style bend it yourself 6 foot pipe is almost a perfect fit. I went up to advanced and brought with me my master cylinder and flex line and they didn't have a line with the right size fittings. Anybody happen to know the thread sizes or even better, a place that sells direct fit replacement?

  6. Don't buy MS unless you are willing to read the documentation. Most people who have problems skip this step. The great part is that you can read it all before you buy it. MS probably has the strongest online community of any aftermarket EMS, too.

Forrest, I just bought some injector connectors from you on Ebay. Great quality and price! Thanks[/thread jack]

  7. I'm seeing more and more cars with hid and projector type lighting popping up in the junk yard. I'm considering makeing my own lamp, like another member did a while ago. I see newer q45's and newer mazdas all over the place. Anybody know any other make/models that would make a good canidate?

  8. Based on the two posts above, you shouldn't be critical of his spelling or grammar.

Ed, I'm not sure what you mean by this comment. I tried to make it as clear as possible that I was simply offering him some advice from someone who has been around Ebay for a while.

If your comment was a slight at the grammar or spelling I used in my post, I will be quick to point out that my post represents only my ideas and not a $9,000 transaction.
