I just purchased crate SBC 350 from jegs a Gm performance product . Well 6,000 miles latter i have 8% blow by on every piston and a whoping 12% on number 3 piston . What are the limits i should expect on a crate engine ? 5% or less or a bit more . I broke the engine in just like they said to do in the little manual that was sent with it . So i guess im looking at rebuilding a brand new engine that sucks with only 6,000 miles Of course they refuse to waranty the product as its not in a gm vehicel . I was even told my 78 280z put a strain on the engine as the engine wasnt made for a datsun . I asked what he meant by a strain on the engine he said the car is probably to heavy for the engine !!!!!!! Aparently a dumb ass so i spoke to someone else with no luck Just wanting to know what percentage of blow by i should be expecting to see or if all is normal basiacaly . Jason

Ok i posted a few things about stoping problems well i found i had a leaky booster . So i replaced it and finally got it adjusted and dang does it stop good . I almost threw myself through the windshield the first time i hit the brakes . So i really had to spend the day driving around learning to use my brakes all over again no more pushing the pedal roughly to stop . Now i have to lightly feather the thing , i didnt know a z car could stop so good . To bad they dont make a ABS unit for non abs cars that would be nice . Thanks for all the advice everyone it sure has helped . Jason

well my suspension is similar , i have the MSA sway bars adjustable end links . Dont order the end links a pain in the ass to adjust . I have the tokico lowering springs but only have the adjustable struts in the rear and the non adjustable in the front . Now to add to the stiffness or harshness of my ride i have the AZ car controll arms the fully adjustable ones . In the front there are no rubber or eurthane bushings anyplace all solid . Same goes for the rear all solid bushings . I had a problem with a fuel pressure gauge going bad about 2 weeks after i bought it i went through 3 cheap ones untill i gave in and bought the liquid filled gauge . Its lasted longer 4 months so far but the needled is starting to creep up the scale it never fully goes back to 0 psi it goes down to about 1 1/2 psi even when removed from the fuel line . I have my fuel pressure set to 7 psi but the gauge now says its 9 psi but i know better ive tested the pressure . I guess it determines where the gauge is mine is on the carb fuel inlet line about 2 inches from the carb . Jason SBC 350 super charged

I assume this is with a turbo . Would methanol injection also work with a supercharger ? Jason

Blue foam for fiberglass mold ? what is it
gretchen/jason replied to gretchen/jason's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Thats not a bad idea with the styro foam stuff ive used aluminum tape alot in the past gives me a good idea for a wide body kit once i try to add height to my existing hood scoop that is . first things first get the hood tall enough to clear the engine . If anyone wants to know i have a all fiber glass hood with a 4 inch cowl well its about 3 1/2 inches to short need like a 7 inch cowl as with a super charger there just is about 2 inches between the carb flange and the hood not enough for a proper air filter . Blue foam for fiberglass mold ? what is it
gretchen/jason replied to gretchen/jason's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Cool thanks for the info . ive searched past threads but wasnt sure about a sheet metal form as i wasnt sure if it would stick or not . There is a local marine store in town ill see what they have . Jason -
Is it something ya can get at a fabric shop ? Ive looked around but no luck so far . Someone told me to use blue foam to make a shape for a mold i want to do for a hood scoop add on . Ive got a aluminum frame made thought of wraping it in sheet metal so it wont have any low spots in it . Is it possiable to lay fiberglass over sheet metal ? Jason

Well i do have a PCV valve hooked up but my brakes the "power booster " is also hooked up to the same vacuum line as the PCV valve . Doesnt seem to work so good for the pcv valve as it like to spit oil out anyplace it can at high rpms . Not a lot of oil but just seepage . Im haveing a leak down test done monday but ive only got 6 k on the entire engine . . I talked to a local drag racer and he said to just put breathers on each valve cover and not use a PCV as i use it as a daily driver . Or he said to put a T fitting of some sort to connect both breathers and vent them to a catch can . I had the same problem on the stock 6 cylinder and it had 2% leakage by the rings , but spit crankcase oil at high rpms . Jason

Is it better to have a negative pressure in the engine block by letting the PCV valve create a vacuum or to let it breathe through a breather in one valve cover . Ive heard that a vacuum in the block is a good thing some people say its not a good thing just wanted a few opinions before i finis running a few vacuum lines . Jason

Some gauges only come half full or at least i ordered a fuel pressure gauge and it wasnt quite full and its a autometer gauge . id call autometer and ask Jason

water cooled turbo and oil cooler
gretchen/jason replied to 280tyler's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
I have a buddy with a 92 Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo granted its not a z but most Mitsubishis that have turbos have Oil and water cooled turbos . The water cools of course via the radiator then they have a seperate oil cooler . Must work they still use it today . Heck they have gone as far as to have water cooled transfer cases on the all wheel drive cars and suv's . Id run a oil cooler seems ya cant go wrong if its been used since 1992 not sure about before that . Jason -
Ok cant we all just get along just kidding not trying to start anything . Just want to ask again i really like the kit from arita speed . But im sure i cant afford it it was like 4 million yen whatever that equates to . I noticed MSA sold some flares like that but now only has the bolt on style flares not the kind in the pics on the link . Id like to get a set for my z . Is there any place one can get these or something like them . . as for the front id like to get fiberglass fenders is there anyone that sells a fiberglass fender that is wider then stock ? Jason
-
Where can one get flares similar to that maybe not as fat though Sure makes it easy to put in a wider tire . My tires are under the stock fender lip and are only a total of 9 1/2 wide tread is about 8 1/4 wide id like some that are about oh with a 14 inch wide tread . Jason

An idea, possibly cut down on exhaust odor...
gretchen/jason replied to a topic in Miscellaneous Tech
I had the same problem i just made the exhaust tip where it exits the rear of the car a bit longer . i pictured where the outer most part of the taillight would be if ya went straight down as if it were where the exhaust tip was and lenghtend them to that . Jason -
I have Weiand 144 supercharger and it came with 1 fitting under the carb for a vacuum line . problem is i need 2 lines as i have my brake booster and PCV valve hooked up together with a T fitting . I dont like this it sucks . Anyone deal with this problem or have come across it . There is no other place to hook up a vacuum line and my demon carb has no fittings as its a blower carb , Jason

gretchen/jason replied to gretchen/jason's topic in Non Tech Board
I did it yeah for the retard It took awhile but i got it ya have to click the link when i post a thread but its better then nothing . Thats why im a mechanic its much eaiser to fix a car then it is to post a pic !!! or it is in my case anyway . Give me a ECU reflash anyday easy as pie . Thanks everyone for the advice Jason -
Im from melbourne florida the east coast . i had a blacked out window in the rear of a z once same as not being there but only was legal at least where i lived if ya had 2 outside rear view mirrors such as on each door .And if ya put louveres over it ya may never get stoped . id go without louvers to make a statement might look cool show some pics if and when ya do it . http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/10221975/Jan06_01.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/10221975/Jan06_03.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/10221975/Jan06_04.jpg Finally figured out how to post pics thats why im a mechanic not a photographer to complicated to post pics hee hee Not sure if i have enough air flow or if what i have done works properly . Take a SBC 350 weiand super charger 144 series a demone 750 cfm blower carb and put a box on top of the carb flange that is 1 3/4 inches tall above the flange and covers the flange aera itself . Then extends to each side of the car and kinda angles down a bit to fit a 3 inch intake tube on each side . The air filters are not the question but my intake box wondering if its to short but i cant make it taller as it wont clear the hood . Ill try to post a pic if i can figure out how to get it on this thread jason
