HOT ROD tricks... side view mirror door latch mod
JaysZ replied to JaysZ's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
hahaah. that is hilarious, weird, crazy, and definately way too bold for me lol. -
yeah.. thats pretty much what i expected to hear lol. i would like to turbo a car in my future but not for this particular project. i would like to stick with an L28 and stay N/A. i was just curious to see what others have done to their motors and i guess stroking it would be the best way to go. would swapping out the head for a P90 or N54 do much? at that point i could probably go with a bigger cam, bigger valves, port/polish, and new pistons at the same time, but this might take me a long while to get that kind of cash! my brakes and suspension are more important to me at this point anyway.

my closest buddies, all car nuts, have the following cars. 1991 NSX, 2003 M3, 2001 M Roadster. these are their daily drivers the bastards lol. my car on the other hand is an Accord with my Datsun being the weekend car that I havent driven since January (extensive body work). Question is would I be able to keep up with them. My motor is as follows. L28 Block. E88 head. Cam unknown... haven't torn it down yet Triple Weber 40DCOE's (not installed yet) 6-2-1 headers (but I have 6-1 with a cracked flange thats repairable) HKS 10lb flywheel Clutchmaster stage 5 clutch '81 280ZX 5spd Flowmaster Ultra 40 (or should I straight pipe it?) --being a '78, its smog exempt in texas right? compression ratio... also unknown but I'm sure I have regular dished pistons I'd like to increase my compression ratio by getting flat-top pistons and upgrading the cam. most other "mods" will primarily be in the form of weight reduction. i basically have stock suspension/brakes w/ exception of springs, shocks, and front swaybar. what else would i need to do to be able to run with them?

i'm ready to purchase, if it isnt too much. should i go ahead and order the full kit or try to piece it myself? also, it says that i would have to mount it behind plastic or something NOT metal. if i shave the handles, where would i put the sensor? i dont want to make it so obvious i have to wave the "key" in some ridiculous location ... -

well i gotta tell you... i got a GREAT deal (i got the seat for $200 lol) since it was used when my friend got it for his NSX and now he is passing it down to me for a new pair of recaros. $200 is even cheaper than momo starts! lol. the downside is i wont be able to afford another one to have a pair.. i'll either have just the drivers seat or i'll just put the stock passenger seat in. well, if and *when* all this is done, i'll be sure to snap some pics and leave some feedback... man i'm so anxious!!!

has anyone heard or seen of this? i would like to shave my door handles and locks.. before i do that though, i heard about a trick popular in the hotrod/lowrider scene. what they do is have the sideview mirror rotate-able (it could actually be anything really... just be creative ) and attached to the door latch. when the mirror (or whatever else) is rotated, it pulls the latch and releases the lock, allowing the door to be opened. i was thinking, it could be rigged so that the mirror could be rotated and when fully turned, two electric points will touch and activate an actuator in the door. this will eliminate the need for remotes (and the fear of a dead battery in the remote). this would kinda be like the hidden remote switch but in "trick" form problem is, if someone sees you do it, they know how to get into your car. i dunno. i thought this might be a cool idea nevertheless. discuss..

thanks for chiming in guys. i went to the body shop today to snap some pics of the progress (i finally got my digital cam recharger) but they sent it off to get media blasted i'm pretty excited about that. they've finished the floors/frame and will shaving the drip rails soon. anyway, as far as the seats.. i'm only 5'6 lol. would i still have problems? i usually have to scoot myself way up there anyway hahaha. i would like to be able to use sliders, would i be able to do that? this way when other people need to drive my car, they wont be cramped up. it seems the Corbeau seats are popular with Datsun owners.. would you mind giving me your thoughts on the SPG as far as shoulder support, etc? i fit in there SNUG... i love that seat because it is so slim and since i'm a skinny person, it works out great. what do you think? i could probably sell it and get TWO momo starts or something.. these seats new are almost $1000. mine is used and i'm getting a helluva deal on it.
-
What seats do you have and what width are they? also, do you have a rollcage? i'm planning to do the S&W 8 point in my 280Z and i have a Recaro SPG seat. its very slim fitting but I want to make sure I'll have clearance with the cage installed. Pics of the seat I found online: http://www.proamauto.com/page11di.htm http://www.oichan.org/mods/recaro/recaro1.jpg http://www.oichan.org/mods/recaro/recaro3.jpg

i was wondering about the progress of his car... man I'm jealous! that metal work down the center and in the hatch is beautiful.. wow. and those rims.. HRE? those must of cost a fortune!

the ends of the RHD 240sx dash had to be shaved since it was too wide for the 240z shell.. i have those pics somewhere. it looked pretty sweet. if i remember correctly there was a lot of exterior modifications as well.

as you can tell, i'm still pretty much a "noob"... so lots of questions. thanks again for everyones patience and advice. after some research and getting opinions from others, i would like to say i'm pretty much set on getting some CCWs in 17x12 all the way around. i'm just unsure of what hub and brake setup to go with. i would like to spend as little as possible since currently my motor is very mild anyway. Ross, I'll be emailing you very soon as to what my options are. There are a lot of things I would like to upgrade while doing the YZ... the way i figured: YZ kit: $1200 Wheels: $1800 Tires: $800 - $1000 A-ZCar control arms: $800 Coilovers: $1500 - $2000 Brakes: $1000 - $2500 as you can see... lol.. its a bit of an expensive upgrade considering this doesnt include labor (though I'll be doing most of the mechanical work myself, i dont trust myself to do the paint work/molding) and this obviously wont be able to happen overnight. so.... if I can do a brake upgrade that includes new hubs, rotor, and caliper with some new stainless lines.. that would be cool. i can get a great deal on Stoptech so I may look into that through my friend. but, this is probably a whole new thread and I'll have to do some more research but i've been so busy with school... man i wish i won the lottery

in a recent issue of eurotuner (with the blue m3 on 20's) they showcase a widebody A4 with the stock fenders pulled out to achieve its width. it takes a considerable amount of time and especially skill... its a euro thing thats more for purists and to show off skill. the best way to do it is do what evilrufuskay is doing... make your own also, check out this supra... what a gorgeous car. note the steel fenders on it as well. simply amazing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6447&item=4542881630&rd=1

isk' date=' please email me: [email']jkoh4580@gmail.com[/email] i will take them off your hands. Mike... 13"!!! wow that would look amazing. i dont think i've seen a wheel that wide yet LOL. i talked to bill coffey and he recommended 12" for the YZ as well. he has 16x12 CCW's ... i'm contemplating whether i should go with 16, 17, or 18" diameter.. this car's "purpose" is for fun freeway driving on weekends but mostly autocrossing. any comments on what would be more beneficial? -
dudeboy, thanks for the links they will surely come in handy. it seems the 8" wide front wheels for the porsche will be too narrow for a YZ kit. looks like i'll be getting some CCWs but as much as i like the classics, i wish they had a wider variety of wheels to choose from in "custom" sizes. i spoke to bill coffey and he recommends 12" wide wheels to accomodate the fenders. work wheels are beautiful, but they are extremely expensive! i wish i could afford HRE's honestly... if i had the money i'd get those in a heartbeat. but i believe they are about $1000/wheel right?
