  1. I don't know you and this seems like a very personal thread but I'm going to post anyway. I can relate to both the end of your project and having a parent with Alzheimers or any similar condition. I'm betting the decision to pass on the project has been a long time coming and that you may have decided and changed your mind at least once or twice. When I watched the trailer with most of my project pull away I felt a lot of regret but I felt a little better too that all the second guessing was over and it was a done deal. I feel like that car will always be part mine. I think yours will always be part yours too. Watching what happened to my mother was a whole different thing. She died more than four years ago but she was ill for years before that. Watching her deterioration was something that still gives me problems. I had just called it quits as a professional musician when she got sick. My brothers and sisters all had families, jobs, etc..."normal lives" and I was single and still looking around to see what I wanted to do so I was the obvious choice as caregiver. Hardest job I ever had. I don't really have any wisdom to pass on from having gone through that except that sometimes even giving your best isn't enough but try not to doubt yourself. And take care of yourself.
  2. Thanks. 8.5:1 sounds more like it. The z31 na to t starts out around 8.3:1 and guys have had a lot of success with that. I still have my Spearco 221 from the shiro and a lot of bends so I'm good there. I'd probably have a stock turbo rebuilt with a small t4b compressor just for a little more efficiency and headroom. I kept my Aeromotive FPR setup too but the posters at zcar.com seem to think an FMU is the way to go. I'm not sure I buy that but I'll look into it if I do get a turbo motor going. The real goal of the car is driving fun. I don't have any interest in drag racing or street racing. I just want quickness, good handling, and reliability. There are some good roads up around the Texas hill country I'd like to try out. The headlights are staying for the forseeable future. If I had started from scratch and had the money and skills to modify the body there's not much I would have done different. The headlights are one thing I wouldn't have done. All the bodywork was done by the guy who owned the car before the guy I bought it from. Same for the mechanical modifications I think. Not much modification done that I've seen so far. The Webers, cam, and headers. And I discovered by accident that the transmission is a 5 speed. I don't know if you can see the shift knob in the pics but it has the 4 speed pattern on it. I was going through the gears the other day and shifted into 5th by habit. Surprise The PO owned the car from 1995 but he didn't give a lot of details on the motor. I need to give him a call and see what he can tell me. I'd prolly keep the Webers but it's an "old dog, new trick" thing. It's great to open the hood and not see hoses and wires everywhere.
  3. Thank you sir, I'll read that. At my own risk of course
  4. Certified Muffler is pretty much the z31 exhaust system to have. If you aren't worried about being CARB approved (and test pipe pretty much answers that) then you can buy some 3" diameter aluminum or stainless steel piping and a generic K&N (or whatever) cone filter and save quite a bit of money. When I had my 85t I bought a CM dp and catback pipes and bought my muffler and cat at Summit Racing. CM does good work. I bought a K&N re-0810 for $45 at Competition Sales and bought 3" aluminum pipe for about $5. I'd bet MSA wants a little more than $50 for their setup.
  5. I've seen this asked on z31p and 88hybrid. Consensus is that it's fine. You might want to check the price for a catback at CM for a comparison. MSA is usually priced on the high side. It's only a catback so you'll still need a 3" downpipe from CM. I'm not sure about the ram air idea.
  6. Good find as far as it goes. I read this thread and went to the wayback machine hoping to find the site. Somehow they missed archiving it.

  8. I was gonna help out but I guess all my ad blocking programs must be working
  9. Same thing happened to me. I don't mind plastic if it's good plastic.
  10. This may be totally unrelated but you say it's fine until the motor warms up? I can give you some insights into it from a z31 perspective. When the motor warms up the ecu goes into closed loop. The o2 sensor begins to play the major role in feedback. A rule of thumb in the z31 world is to always match your o2 sensor to your ecu. Maybe the L28 o2 sensor isn't playing nice with the 85t ecu? Then again maybe when yall do this z31 ecu swap you have some workaround for that. This is something I'm interested in. Using a z31 ecu in an L28et swap in a 240z would be great. Nistune
  11. I saw that. There were still tens of thousands of tires in store stock that had passed the "safe" date. Glad you were able to control it there BRAAP. That could have gone bad.
  12. Try unplugging the connector to see if that's really what is making the noise. I didn't hear anything unusual but a lot of audio gets lost in a youtube vid.
  13. Skib... thanks for the info. A smallish turbo is what I was thinking for the future but I didn't realize the compression would be that low. 7:1 is not going to do it. Looks like I need to do more research. Rob you have me confused with someone else on the AE radio. I haven't had a chance to play with the car much yet. The carbs might not be as bad as I think. Probably more an old dog new tricks thing. I don't really want to turn this into a project but if an opportunity to pick up an L28et comes up I'm pretty sure I'd take it. I'm not looking to build another beast but I'd like a little more power than the car has now. I appreciate all the good words. Oh and the wheels are 15" BBS two piece.
  14. Hey Matt. The Webers are cool but I'm a lot more comfortable with EFI so I'll be changing it at some point. That isn't going to happen soon though so I'll check out those posts.
  15. cockerstar... Pass but thanks. boostiswhatsfordinner... thanks. Yes they are square lol. Cibie H4's tho.../shrug
  16. Tie rods aren't that hard. Think about doing the balljoints to if you're trying to cover everything. I'm not sure that setup would be considered "very high performance" but it's more than adequate for a street car. Go to http://z31.com/fiche/index.pl and put in 4 d 11 and click "get it" then compare that to the FSM sections FA and ST.
  17. Sounds like a plan. If you need any help with the bushings let me know and I'll try to drudge up the painful memories of replacing the steering, suspension, and bushings on my shiro. Unless you plan to track or autocross I don't think you really need the bump steer spacers. If you want to see a really cool adjustable rear camber setup look for Gary Molitor.
  18. Agreed but if the man wants one then...http://zclub.nicoclub.com/zerothread/464661
  19. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
  20. When it starts wearing out your rear tires too fast on the inboard side. Nothing wrong with a little negative camber You should never have to worry about the fronts unless you have a mechanical problem or you slam it. Is this a what if question or have you recently installed lowering springs?
  21. In everything I've heard from Mustang owners (and 84-86 z31 turbo owners) torque and power shifting is what kills the BW T5. I think it will easily handle a stock or moderately modified L28et. But as a previous poster suggested, get an 83-04 Mustang t45/t5 v8 short shifter with adjustable shift stops. Much better for the transmission and for you. Another plus is that the T5's are easy to rebuild with a kit from 5speeds.com or Hanlon.
  22. Roger covered most of it. The quarter windows and tail lights are prone to leaking. Pull up the carpet and the foam tool tray. Look in the spare tire well. Ask the owner when the last timing belt job was done. If he doesn't know or if it's been a while use that as a bargaining tool. The parts alone are over $200. A shop will charge you several hundred dollars and use inferior parts. It's a pretty easy job if you have some basic tools and a place to do the work. There are a few how-to's on various sites along with all the parts that need to be replaced, including the part numbers. If you get the car see if the Nissan sponsored injector replacement was done. You'll need the VIN and a phone call to 1-800-NISSAN1 to do that. The dying problem could be several things. Probably needs a tuneup also. There is an onboard computer diagnostics system you can use. Download an FSM from http://www.xenonz31.com/reference.html for the procedure. The 350z wheels will fit but you can find more info on that and other things on AZ ZBum's excellent z31 site. http://www.az-zbum.com/index.shtml The subframe bushings are a PITA to replace but not too complicated. I replaced every bushing on my shiro and none of them are really hard to replace. The z31 is a fun car but like any older car it's going to have some maintenance issues. If the t-belt is good it's a pretty reliable car. The vg30 is a great motor.
