LSx dipstick tube & routing
zed240au replied to Savage42's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
im using camaro dipstick and tube seems to fit fine with jtr headers and camaro sump -
really dont think there's room for long tube headers i wanted to make some but had enough trouble building rhd side one for my car which ended up just a 4 into one theres just so little room but my car is rhd you make get something on rhd side in a lhd car but dont believe you would get anything better on the lhd side to balance it to

JCI Passenger mount........
zed240au replied to Blown77Z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
hi cant say i had any trouble with mine id just bend it up to match engine mount if it was mine mick -
why not buy them off jtr i mean they sure have done lots to help z car owners over the years i bought my headers and radiator off them and few books as well i reckon they are legends in the z car scene regards mick

I used Johns car kit with right hand drive the steering and starter motor are on the one side so i doubt you could do it any other way the jci kit gives u mount well forward and just enough room to get a extractor down Made my own gearbox cross member along lines of jags that run specs Using 6 speed manual mick

hi luke having done a early nissan v8 install and now completing a ls1 install id have to say go with the ls1 what you save in engine costs on the late model injected toyota or even nissan v8 you will more than spend on creating your own mounts as well as the bell housing and manual conversion for either of these v8s plus theres no after market parts avilable when you want more hp custom cams and porting all costs way more than off the shelf ls1 parts plus plenty support avilable for ls1 installs That said the ls1 is not a straight forward install in rhd car but i can tell u hurdles as well as fixes for rhd ls1 install right hand side extractor is major issue as well as minor alternator issue mick

Building a Rally z.... Any imput would help alot!
zed240au replied to cpt jack's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
from rallying my rx4 here in aus id say you need strut tower braces bigger front brakes i suggest 4 spot calipers and vented discs at minium good brake pads all round hydraulic handbrake or emegency brake as you call them over there id try for lsd if you can been living with welded diff in my rx4 for way too long it works fine but sure is a bitch when parking another thing to consider would be lower diff ratio say 4.4 or even 4.87 also most rally drivers perfer adjustable brake bias as in pedal box problem with this is u cant run brake booster couldnt get the hang of the one that was in my rx4 when i bought it so i went back to normal booster and master cylinder also consider camber adjustment make the z steer better first aid kit and fire extinguishers intercom terratrip trip computer also consider that dirt or gravel rallies really hammer your car its like sand blasting the under carriage so once youve done a few rallies it really becomes a race car few things to think about mick -
Cost Estimate - Don't share this with your wife
zed240au replied to sstallings's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I agree numbers look fine but as said previously and it dosent matter weather its a car or house if your doing it yourself the small stuff adds up from my experience is that quote the big stuff and allow at least half to same amount again to cover all the small bits bolts rubbers bearings brake pads thinners sand paper all adds up fast just the other day spent $20 on bolts $100 on fuel and brake line fittings all adds up fast mick -
qwik240z the bottom hangs half inch above bottom of sump so shouldnt give any ground clearance problems mick
-
well its taken awhile and a 3 attempts but finally have made my rhd side extractor tried taking 2 pipes down either side of steering shaft but wasnt enough room to fit between head and strut tower then looked at some different headers being made for ls1 so i tried similar to what i have now but had bottom pipe going lower keeping all 4 longer than now was too close to steering rod now my last attempt seems to fit the bill clears steering rail looks reasonable and clears damn steering shaft pics below now im getting excited again to finish car

i did weigh both motors and boxes but dont know what the exact weights are now on memory i think the v8 combo was about 50 kg heavier but not sure now currently changing to a ls1 motor myself while ive been happy with the nissan the need for more power has lead me to the ls1 i did get a full gasket kit for the y44 with thoughts of chasing more hp a friend has a y40 in pieces and it looks really well made with plenty of room to chase more hp but when you have to develop it all yourself with no aftermarket parts avaliable i find the ls1 route a simplier way to chase that hp fix luv to see some one develop a ground stomping y44 good luck mick
-
well ive found the y44 to be a very smooth engine nice power nothing earth shattering about 220 hp at the flywheel ran aftermarket ignition and holley 600 vacum secondary and then 600 double pumper with a hand built extractors and twin 2 inch system very reasonable on fuel about 300 km to a 60 litre tank

LS1 using JTR Kit question
zed240au replied to zkoresko's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
the jtr is meant for the older 350 series chevs and has no easy comparison to the jci kit which is meant for the ls1 series motors there really is know reason to try use the jtr kit with an ls1 as theres no way a jci kit would work with a 350 series engine that said the only thing i did use from the my jtr kit was the gearbox cross member on my ls1 -
well wouldnt say it was one of a kind been running y44 in my 240z for 17 years great to see some one else doing the conversion
-
as noted the extractors i hand built to suit aussie rhd drive so not sure on the lhd fitment just learnt that problem with my ls1 install lhd headers dont even look like fitting rhd oh well done it once before so suppose i can do it again another set of hand built headers on the way to suit ls1 rhd fun of conversions should have learnt last time lol mick
-
just to sort out any confusion my motor and box will bolt straight into a 240z no modifications needed to the car this is because the engine mounts on the engine have been custom made to match the 240z crossmember nothing over complicated there just changing the angle of the engine mount made from rhs as for the gearbox a 240z gearbox mount has been adapted to the celica 5 speed box and bolts into std mounts in tunnell of car there are two mods needed to fit to car the gear lever fits 3" forward of nissan so need to cut a little bigger hole there and as i was running cable throttle cable would need to convert to that or previously i ran solid links re the std nissan style so could provide that if needed used std radiator std clutch master cylinder So to answer the questions no a nissan v8 is not a straight swap but this motor having already ran in a 240z is mick
