I spoke with Mike D. yesterday, and he hates the noise his Holley Blue pump makes so much he wants to give it to me!! lol He tells me the rotary vane-type units are much quieter. Davy

Great amount of information and discussion there in that thread. Nice & polite too. Davy

Anthony, Yes this is a good deal, but I think you will still spend $300 to $500 more for the rest of the items, unless someone else proves me wrong and I am way off base in my figures. A T56 owner can tell you, but I do think $800 sounds very reasonable. For exactly the same items, the T5 goes for $650 and the T56 goes for $1200 around here--way too rich for my blood. I held out to get a deal on a T5 and found one; the T56 is just too much for me. Glad you found a deal! Davy

I have found it at automotive paint supply places. Occasionally, it'll be at more common hardware stores, but try the guys that sell paint to the body shops first (use the phone).

It'll only add HP!!!! Davy

Mike, Are they available soon? Davy

Sweet looking car! Thanks for posting that. If that was a guy's car on this board, we'd know about it... DavyZ

I have never used this on Imron, but I like "Peeler" for most paints. It is made by Kleen Strip and leaves the primer intact while bubbling the rest of the paint and making it possible to blow it off with compressed air. Davy

That car was one of ZDriver.com's first "Car of the Month" rides. Do a search there and you'll find out that it is even more impressive underneath and inside. Very cool. Davy

Eric, please see my email to you. Davy

Very sweet looking motor with all the right parts! Davy -

Your entire post was excellent, Pete! Very good points made regarding connections and corrosion. I want to reiterate on the ground strap: Sometimes electrical problems are caused by a bad ground, plain and simple. Just looking at the ground cable is not enough. A thorough inspection is in order. I once had a car that kept blowing batteries and snapping throttle cables--because the supid ground cable was bad! The battery acid had nearly dissolved the metal wire w/o melting the insulation; looked fine from the exterior, but who would have thought??? Davy

Gee, I guess that would be right. Hey, it can easily take 24 months to do a swap anyway...register the car as a "non-op" until the date... Also, many '74 cars were made in '73 for the '74 model year--however, I don't think this argument would hold water with DMV very well. Davy

As they say, "Speed costs money, so how fast do you want to go?" $500-$10000 would be a good guess. Please buy the JTR manual that covers this kind of swap. Here is the link for them: http://www.jagsthatrun.com/ Your initial question is too broad to answer specifically; it's like asking "how much does a house cost?" or something like that. There is a current link going on right now asking guys how much they have spent on their conversions. The ranges are amazing--few dollars to BIG BUCKS! If you can budget $5000 to do a cheap swap and buy the JTR book, then I think you are in pretty good shape. Davy

Z motorsports sell's motormounts,headers,ect... are they the way to go? also which chevy do i go for? I didn't hit the lottery so the junkyard is my friend and I'm not afraid of oil. and also I WANT A 5 SPEED. Well, there is more information here and Chevy swaps are more common, but nearly everyone on this site are friends. Buy the JTR manual and read it several times before choosing any conversion parts from any other company. It will be money very well spent and it covers the complete swap. Any small block Chevy will do, but remember that more cubes mean more power. The minimum I would go is a 350 and go up from there. Here is a link to JTR: http://www.customconversion.com/Pages/Datsun_Z_V-8.html Good luck! And don't forget to use the search function on this site to get the information you need; chances are that most questions have been covered sevenfold. Davy -
Use the search function in the forum to look up "smog laws" and you'll find links to the CA DMV regarding smog. The above information you have been given is correct about the present laws and changing ones in CA. If you have a good 260Z, keep it and do the swap in that...you only have 12 months to go. Davy

I have owned both kinds (FWD & RWD) and I can tell you that RWD is more fun IMO. There are those that will disagree with me, telling me that if I only 'learned to drive' a FWD car I would do better, but I am not impressed. RWD for me anytime! Davy

Evan, it looks like a winner; I just wished I could hear how it sounds in person!! Thanks for posting the pic since it gives me sick ideas on what to do next. Davy -
OK, I feel stupid for spending the time I did after misreading.... Dumb dumb dumb... Sorry, I can't help you right now. Davy

Looks like a great start--smoothing and all does wonders for the cars in general. Please post this in the Body & Paint Forum next time so everyone can enjoy--you'll get precious few comments by isolating it in the 6 cyl forum. Davy

I believe Alsil's site (Al Silvera) has the mount information. From there, the rest is hooking the motor up to the car via gas & electrical. ah, if it only were so easy... I think the main reason why guys don't pull everything out once they install it is because of the amount of time they spent doing the work in the first place. Having to reinstall the motor and trans is not my idea of weekend fun. Davy

This is interesting because I'm not sure how many people want to touch this kind of thing The picture I have is black and white and does not show the 'box' you speak of. The instructions are written for making the 280 speedo guts work in the 240 housing with a SBC Chevy & HEI. I don't know if this is what you are after, but if so, here is the scoopy: 1) Remove plastic housing from case. 2) remove nuts that secure wires to back of tach, and the nuts beneath the wires. 3)Remove the Phillips head screw from back of tach. 4)Push 'guts' of tach through front of tach housing. 5)Remove guts from 280Z tach same way. 6)Install guts from 280Z into 240Z case--make sure that the ground wire and power wires are reversed (they are the ones held by nuts). 7)The sensing wire on the 240Z comes from the ballast resistor and goes to the positive side of the ignition coil (it is the white wire that does a loop on the back of the tach). Cut the white wire and attach a 15K ohm, 1/2 watt resistor to the side with the black band around it. Connect this to the sensing terminal on the 280Z tach. The white wire with red band should not be used, so just tape it up. 8)In wiring the HEI disty, connect the black-white wire in the engine compartment to the BAT terminal on the disty. Connect the other black-white wire to the TACH terminal on the disty (on neg side of coil). Attach green-white wire to fuel pump wiring. HTH, Davy 8)

Ron, That's really great to know, but I also have the Summit brand of header and they have a different looking flange than the pictures. Perhaps they change them once in a while ?? Mine are several years old. Davy
