  1. New design, 18 fins instead of ~30. Deformation with 2500lb load applied vertically, slightly offset to front. Wheel is 17x11 weighs ~25lbs out of 6061 AL, haven't tried any weight reduction ideas yet, mainly because this wheel would be pretty much impossible to build for less than 98432894084 dollars. This is mainly just to show the pretty colors I can make btw. EDIT: Second and third pictures are equivalent stress and deformation for a 2500lb car undergoing an 8g later loading (I guess this would be impossible or very instantaneous) plus the 2500lb vertical load (4 times the static vertical load).
  2. Yes I used inventor. I like to draw in SolidWorks too though. I also use emachineshop.com's software for making basic things and getting a price estimate.
  3. The part came in! It appears to be correct based off of measurements I took with my scale... I do not have a micrometer though, but I am pretty sure it is the right part. The Nissan PN is: 38335-N3220 It is stamped "Koyo83601ASH" - Japan. This bearing is available for ~$47 on courtesynissan.com. I am going to inquire about the cost of fitting it with ceramic balls just for kicks. EDIT: I just got off the phone with the ceramic ball ebaring guy. he is going to hybridize this bearing with ceramic balls for me for ~$100. I am 75% interested in seeing how it comes out, 25% interested in the claimed extended service life and minimized friction. In any case, he says he can do 25 pieces in FULL ceramic (silicone nitride) for $100 a pop. That is double the courtesy price, but it might be worth it for some... I honestly would be more interested in doing a full kit on this differential since I would think the large side bearings would be the biggest power sappers.

  5. Fortunately I made a wheel paper for my manufacturing process class in where I designed a 17x10 or 17x11 wheel I like quite a lot... Don't ask me about the stress analysis. I never ran it and I am too afraid to. I was working on a turbine shaped wheel, but never finished... maybe I will finish it. Just added 17x10 turbine. If only some one would or could make it.
  6. 4 cylinder cranks, Eh? I had someone measure a Porsche 3.0L S2 I4, they came up with ~4.8" bore spacing.... With a 4 cylinder crank though, aren't the journals for the connecting rods only really meant to fit one. I would be afraid that there wouldn't be any room to machine in another...
  7. I also do not understand why one wouldn't go for a single turbo setup at that point. I think the turbos up top is probably more for clearance than anything else, but that is a guess.
  8. I have heard the same, but do not know. My first girlfriend is probably going to transfer to Davis from Santa Barbara City college. I hear you guys get first priority. I went to a private high school and didn't get into Cal Poly for ME. I had a 3.86 and a 2000+ on the SAT. I write essays pretty well too. My friend with a 4.13 didn't make it either for civil and he had higher SATs. That doesn't mean you won't get in. For all I know they just didn't like me or my school. I still wouldn't have gone there if I did get in back then. Now, I would consider it, but I really like being up here in this area. I just think it is tough to get into. Impacted is the word.
  9. I would think Cal Poly would be a pretty good place. Mainly because of the girls. It is hard to get into though. Unless you do what my friends did and enter under something like "Ag Business"
  10. I have noticed my peers at UC Davis are clueless. Which seems to make it just easier for me to use the machine shop and such. Nobody knows how to use their hands around here, but seeing as your on Hybridz.org you shouldn't have that problem... Theory has a higher pay potential, from what I have seen. Alternatively all of my engineering friends are more hands on. Just talking about 95% of the other engineers I meet.

  12. I concur on the VLSD. I will check Nissan FAST right now and see if the axle is the same between Japanese VLSD and open diffs. EDIT: Couldn't find anything conclusive on FAST.
  13. I just called the Rep. No update on shipping status yet. My junk 255/40/17 and 275/40/17 did come in though which is nice. I also received lower A-Arms the other day. Checked in on the ZG flares they are coming "this week".
  14. I agree... I think the real plus is in the weight savings and simplification. I just have no clue if these will even put a dent in the cabin temperature. Yes, you would need to put heat sinks on both sides with CPU fan on exhaust side, but that is simple. Alternatively polarity can be reversed and it can make heat, but I am a firm believer in having a heater core since it can double back as a radiator when you are over heating... Secondly, it is free heat, this draws amps/gasoline. At the same time though am I X-lbs a believe? Hmmm. As with most things... if it really is that easy, wouldn't OE already run it...

They are about 10-20% efficient from what I hear, so it may not be the best method, but would this even be practical? How many of these 545 watt units would one need to chill the air on medium or high speed (obviously specific answers are not necessary - just ball park figures would be cool).

  18. Freshman year my friend got bapped by a Ford Explorer and ended up on the hood. She was fine though. I almost got hit by one of those huge FWD Cadillacs the other day. Cars don't understand the whole yield thing (I am taking about car roads crossing bike roads on campus).
  19. Ahh you snapped the stub axle, common problem from what I hear. Get a 280z axle to replace it, search "stub axle", there is a lot of info. The 280z axles are stronger and have 27 splines instead of 25 that the 240z featured. Just remember to get the flange as well for the half shaft side.
  20. This leads me to believe the author things a CV joint to be too weak for performance/heavy duty applications. Interesting. I will continue to research.
