Project: SteeZee - 1973 Datsun 240Z LQ9 V8 Build
CrayZ replied to Aaj2k5's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
By the looks of that shop and tooling he probably made his own.. Nice shop man, a mill and lift is all you need if you ask me. The sky is the limit at that point. -
Alain was this directed towards me?

My Dream LS7GTZ.......project underway
CrayZ replied to cobramatt's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I hear you loud and clear and to comment on your response I would say that perhaps I have given the impression that I'm trying to build a car to win races. This is going to be a weekend/occaitonal track car. I'm not looking to win a championship or race professionally. This will be something fun for me and the wife on the weekends! Store bought bolts on parts. If I do infact enjoy it that much I will probably look elsewhere for a more affordable competition car. I just wanted to say that I enjoy your car and it has given me some modivation to get it track ready for the level I'm looking to use it at. -
I have mounted the seats basically to the floor. They are as low as they can possibly go. Once I get the seat centered I think ill be in good shape. There is a lot of room now. Thanks for the heads up

Will do, thanks!

My Dream LS7GTZ.......project underway

I just watched some of your race videos and man i have to say it looks like a BLAST!! When i first picked up my Z i had intentions of drag racing it. After spending alot of time at family friends shop (former dirt track racing legend around Houston) he has convinced me to setup the car up in a manor to race it on a road track. Ive always been a fan of this type of racing but never had the funds to try it out. Compiled with a proper facility, Trailer, Driving instruction and know how of an ex professional driver i think im going to give it a whirl. Oh and a much larger bank account all of the sudden.. My build will be no where near as detailed or intricate as your own but for some reason your videos and build have inspired me to take a larger step towards my goal of getting on the track. The car should be track ready in 4 months or less. Again well done and congrats on building such a cool car. -
Thanks for the complement! I've always wondered what it looked like on the road. I work off of the beltway and 290 so you might see it more often.
-
That was me! I live right around meushke and 290
-
I'm unsure of the what kind of seats they are. The car is at my uncles body shop so I think it will be fairly easy to get the work done but I was hoping for a straight forward approach. I dislike the idea of cutting out the hump but I don't see any other route.
-
If I cannot purchase a tunnel I was thinking about cutting out the hump and just extending the factory seat rails
-
Can I order a replacement panel from a 240? The earlier 240's didn't have the hump correct?
-
I also have my seats sitting on the floor. I have no rails or adjustments. The problem is there is no ability to move the seat towards the center of the car becuase of the trans hump. DAZ you might want to put a door on there and check the fitment. If you have one of those big ass seats like me your going to be in for a surprise. If I where you I'd take out the rails and just mount the seat where you want it. I gained at least 3-4" of headroom after mounting it on the floor and correctly positioned.
-
Yeah found that out the hard way this weekend. It's looking like ill have to either beat the snot out of the tunnel or cut it out and try to work something out. Im hoping someone can chime in with some similar experiences
-
Well i used the search button alittle more and found that this problem is common. With that said id like to see what you guys have come up with short of buying smaller seats. If anyone has any photos of changes they have made id love to see them.
-
So this weekend i removed the terribly installed racing seats from my 280z. The previous owner was 5'5 and im 6'2 needless to say I didn't fit. I got the passenger seat installed to a good position very easily. The transmission tunnel is not rounded out on the passenger side like it is on the driver side. I am not able to mount the driver seat at a comfortable position and still have the door close. My question is this. Is the transmission tunnel bulged more on the driver side than the passenger from the factory? This problem might be that the previous owner hammered it out to fit the T56 in there but the fact that the trans tunnel is bulged a lot more on the driver side is forcing me to position the seat VERY close to the driver door and not allowing it to close properly. The only fix i can see is cutting out the driver side section of the trans tunnel and modifying it so that i can scoot the seat closer to the center of the car. Has anyone ran into this problem?
-
Mine does the same thing. Im in the process of trying to stiffen the chassis as we speak. I didn't want to do it but i think a full roll cage in these cars is almost a must if you plan on achieving any real speed numbers safely.
-
I put some toe plates on my 280z this weekend and realized it had 5/8" in ward toe from the rear. I know this has been covered many times but I haven't found anything telling me exactly how much toe they came with. I realize something is probably bent or bushings worn out.
-
Alain I had to share this.. I'm excited to finally get my hands on one.
-
Mounting the Differential more level is probably a good idea but in no way directly related to the issue is was having. IMO the car sits far lower than MM ever considered for their axles.. In turn they are to short for my particular application. I can safely say that my spacers have corrected the problem and i have put several thousand HARD miles on this rear end and it is working perfectly.

Wfritts LS1 Dyno/Track results

My E-Penis is HUGE!! -
IIRC you where wanting to stay N/A right? If so I think the LS3 is a great platform for the money. 600rwhp is easily achieved with that motor and damn near impossible to keep the tires from breaking loose any how. I'm hoping to go turbo soon but have decided to take a step back and get the little crap done first as I should be doing anyways... I will be keeping in touch, hopefully both of our cars get done soon so we can make a scene at cars & coffee.
-
Thanks Alain, I read up on it a while ago but haven't had time to do the rear disk swap and planned to do the BMC at the same time. I'm getting my frame rails re done as well as re mounting the seats to a better spot. Just got a fast intake/TB and some bigger injectors so give me a week or so and ill let you drive it so you can have an idea of what it's gonna be like. It's def no LS3 but it should hold you over for awhile.

Agreed! I have two spare bedrooms in my house and a wife that loves to cook! -
Alain how difficult was it to get that 1" BMC put together properly? I have the exact same one that came in my kit and need to install it soon
