calvin280zxt
Working on my 82 turbo 2x2. Just need some inspiration i guess. How far gone was your Z!? And how did you tackle the seams that the wonderful seam sealer did not protect. My car is as good of shape as i can get in canada. Thats what i tell myself anyway. Also any rust eliminating/preventing tips would apreciated. I have done this before and learned the hard lessons but unibodies are a whole other animal
BluDestiny
None of my Z's have had any amount of "bad" rust, other than the parts car that looked like **** anyway. I'm from the great state of California he worst was in my first ZX and it had a hole the size of a deck of cards. I got that patched by a body guy for $50. Down the road when I'm outta college and want to torture myself, I may buy a rusty one, learn to weld and have at it.
calvin280zxt
Ill take a cracked dash anyday over rust haha. My parts car has struts sticking out the hood but a mint black dash haha
dexter72
I bought my z not knowing how rusty it was, until I started removing the trash that was piled up in it. Trash was up to the dash and top of the door panels. The trans was in the hatch and leaking gear oil on the carpet. Battery box rusted through and under the box, floor panels gone, spare tire well gone, rocker panels rusted through. Since I am originally from Maryland and used to rust in old cars. I removed all the undercoating, trash, and cut all the rust out. You just attack the rust and repair it how your able to. Weld in new panels or Rivet and seal in new sheet metal. OldAndyAndTheSea
Bought this 260 for little to nothing. Has some rust issues, not HORRIBLE, but not ideal either. Prettier. Slowly........she's coming around. Not bad for a fun "beat it up" car. I've got around 50 bucks into it so far. Haha, This is my budget build. calvin280zxt
looks good old andy. my biggest areas are in front of the rear wheels, the classic tailight spongey gasket rot spare tire well and various other small seams. plan is to get the metal work done rough in the body and go flat black so i can get it off jackstand prison and drive it/work on the floors/underbody until funds allow a paintjob
nish
The rustiest and only one I'm saving is mine. I'm probably crazy to do it, but I already own it and it's "my" Z and it will live again. Below is my passenger floor for reference. Commit to the time and you'll get there. Ranger1316
The principle are the same, my Wrangler was halfway eaten up with rust but I saved it. I even ended up welding in diamond plate in the back floor section lol. I'll be welding in fender patches and the section underneath the hatch and using Ospho to take care of other areas in my Z. Sean111
The one I'm working on now is pretty awful. 1/2 of the car scraped off when I was loading it on to the trailer. Found rust everywhere, whatever isn't rusted is bent. Hello, tube frame!
rayaapp2
Ca cars? What a load! I bought a 75 280Z from Sacramento Ca. Ive seen cars sitting within 1/4 mile of the Pacific Ocean for 20 years with less rust! What's that? That is the pile that was left under the car after I HOSED it out! Its a work in progress It will be getting a LS1 and it was the perfect starting point as all the rust was in panels we planned to cut out and remove for the fuel system or re-enforcement. What is odd about his car is that the hatch sill and rocker/dog leg corners are rust free. But I literally grabbed the spare tire well by the center and it broke free when i lifted up revealing the gas tank! Better yet though when we picked the car up I put my foot through the car reaching for the brake pedal while loading the car on the trailer. That was a scare! You gotta start thinking about it as weight reduction not rust. LOL
