Rob L Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 Hey guys I've search far and beyond lol and cannot find any opinions on the availible replacement ignition switches....there's the z stores and datsun -parts for 230 and up or the one I'm looking for a review on is the black dragon ignition switch for 129.95 for my 1974 late year 260z .....any one try it ? TimO Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 Are you talking about the ignition lock cylinder or the ignition starter switch? Check NAPA auto parts on line. Pretty sure it's the switch you can wiggle the key a lot and when you turn the key you don't get any power at all maybe after 10 turns it starts once or gets power once then nothing another 10 turns you know what I mean ? NewZed Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 You can bend some extra twist into the flat bar that connects the lock cylinder with the electrical switch, if the problem is that you're not getting power to the starter solenoid when you try to start the engine. NewZed Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 You never answered TimO's question in #4. There are two parts - the locking part and the electrical switch part. Screws hold them together. Take the component off of the steering column, take screws out that hold the two pieces together, and use a screwdriver to turn the electrical switch. That will tell you if you need a new electrical switch. Leon may have been referring to the weak solenoid power problem. If you had mentioned a click along with the no power, that would be a path to follow. He can add on. If you want to be as effective and time-efficient as possible, measure voltage at the solenoid wire while someone turns the switch. No work required, but you'll know more than you do now. Sounds like you haven't really done much except turn the key and listen to what your brother-in-law said. This is an easy problem. Do you have a meter? Just trying to help you make some progress. seattlejester Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 My friend broke my key off in my original ignition. Using a 90* screw driver you may be able to get to the two phillips screws that hold the switch to the lock mechanism. All you need to actuate it is a screw driver or a key something flat, that's how I drove my car for a few weeks. You can definitely see if it is worth your time by actuating the switch mechanism to see if that cures your problem, if it does then yes new ignition setup needed, if not, then it seems you just need to work on the lock mechanism. For what it is worth I bought my complete replacement ignition setup on ebay from a thailand seller for 60$ and it works fine. ryant67 Posted July 10, 2014 Share Posted July 10, 2014 I grabbed a ignition switch from my local Napa, think it was around $50. So it's available from Napa Canada. Rock Auto has the same part, albeit a different make, for about $20 USD. It's a basic part, so I doubt anything is gained by buying 'genuine nissan'. Before ordering though, I would run a voltmeter to the back and yellow (or is it black and white? whichever runs to the starter solenoid...) wire where it plugs in at the back of the ignition switch and see if it has voltage when you turn the key to start the car. If no voltage shows, check the the power wire. If it's fine, then replace the switch. Mine wasn't showing voltage, turns out the spade connector for that wire had broken loose from the switch. The guy at the local Napa just searched for it in their system, and found it easily enough. They didn't have any locally and had to ship it in from a store out west though. Pretty sure the brand was Echlin. Not all Napa's are created equal though, some have pretty terrible workers who seemingly go out of their way to be unhelpful. You'll have to look under two categories though: Electrical - Switches and Relays, and Ignition. You could spend $37.38 up to $52.58 Good luck removing the old one.
