Guest Your Car is Slow
so since I missed out on the first post obviously....what made you choose that crossmember and what had to be done to it to get it to work...and what advantages to having that are there? Looks very nice btw!
auxilary
Owen - that's a vintage air a/c kit.
fastzcars
Thanks for the words of encouragement, Aux is right owen, that is a vintage ir unit. Gen2 super compact I think is the name of it. The Miata rack I found at a junk yard while looking for mirror's. When I first saw it I thought it was a bolt in. But it wasen't. The mounting ears of the crossmember had to be cut in half, extended 1/2 inch and a flat bar stock welded on top, to recreate the mounting ears. I also chose the miata rack because of the quick ratio and the fact that is nly requires 2 3/4 turns lock to lock. Agains guys thaks for the kind words. Oh by the way Owen, I live by the mission san gabriel. But my car is at a friends home in Cypress. You guys are actually closer to my car than I am. My friend, David Ri, Is a great guy, He let's me park my car there while I fix it at his driveway. Ya see , I live at an apartment with no garage, and a commen driveway, so there's no way I could do this at my place without his help. Well. thats it for now, Any other questions I'll be glad to answer . Thanx again for listening.

Mike kZ
Is the steering radius the same as stock?
fastzcars
Mike kz, I haven't installed the rack yet in the car. The crossmember is out at the powdercoater. I don't think the turning radius should change, Just the amount of turns from lock to lock should be less.
j260z
do you have to reroute the hydraulic lines?
fastzcars
j260z , I'll make some new braided steel lines, I still have to figure out how to mount the pump assembly to the engine block. I have an idea on how I'm going to do it, Probably a serpentine set up. I'll take some more pictures.
TimZ
j260z , I'll make some new braided steel lines, Just FYI - perhaps you already knew this, but standard steel braided hoses do not have a high enough pressure rating to use with a power steering system - you can get pressure spikes of over 2000psi at full lock. Both Aeroquip and Earl's make special power steering hose and hose ends. This is what you should use.
j260z
the lines i was asking about are the steel ones that go down the length of the rack. will those ones need to be rerouted or do they fit well? on the subaru rack i'm playing with the lines are routed under the rack and i would need to make new ones that ran along either the front or the top of the rack. fastzcars
Hi there guys. J260z, Sorry about the misunderstanding of your questions on the hydrolic lines. The lines on my rack are stock. The only interference war the center outlet one. The crossmember needed a notch for it. Just a little heat from a torch and a well placed hammer hit was all it took to make the lines clear. That and the fact that the Driver side motor mount needed quit a bit of massage work to clear the input shaft. Thanks for the heads up TimZ about the stainless steel lines. I'll make sure to check on the specs on the hose. There a great place called MR HOSE. They make lines for the trucking trade, They said they can make any hose for anything. I'll see if that's true. Z U all later.
Guest gprix1
I've been considering doing a PS rack and I like the idea of using the miata rack but I have a question for all you suspension guru types. I always thought that you want your tie rods to mimic your suspension arms as they move up and down as much as possible to avoid bump steer. This means having the tie rods level with the arms and having the pivot point on the inner end of the tie rod as close as possible to the inner pivot point of the suspension arm. The inner pivot point on the Miata rack appears to be wider than the Z's to me and I'm wondering if the tie rods and suspension arms will still move together the same. fastzcars, it's hard to tell where the pivot point is under that boot on the Miata rack so maybe they are really very close. Would you mind measuring the width of the inner tie rod pivot points on the two racks? j260z
i had thought of that also. when i looked at the subaru rack i found that it was about an inch longer than the stock one so it shouldn't change things too much. i looks like the miata rack would be about the same. the other thing i noticed is that the ball jointed pivot has a larger range of motion that the stock unit also. i'm not sure how much more as i have nothing to measure it with. fastcarz if you could confirm that the miata rack also has the same range of motion and it is roughly the same length from ball joint pivot to ball joint pivot for the stock and miata racks that would go a long way to convincing me that i should scrap my subaru rack for the miata rack.
