Ivan280zt
just wondering if cams are same in both heads for example if i got motor with p90a head and then got nice cam for it could i use that same cam in p90 head? thanks Ivan
yo2001
P90A cam got 4 deg advance cut in to it from the factory. I bet the motor would make more mid range rather than HP on top. Not much difference other than that
Ivan280zt
Yo, man that was freaking fast so do you think (or know) that afther market cam for p90a would still have 4 deg advance then the same exact cam for p90. does this make sense to you? yo2001
An aftermarket usually have 4 deg cut into it. But if you got a hydro. head, then the cam won't do too good because they like to float valve in high rpm. I've hear around 7k rpm. You can always degree the cam if you want it straight up. SleeperZ
This is new to me about the difference in cams between P90A and P90. Yo, how did you find this out? I have a Nissan re-manufactured L28ET in my Z, with a P90A with solid pivots. Makes me curious how I can optimize my setup... FL327, I'm not sure how the difference in the '83 inital ignition timing advance has to do with a camshaft timing difference, but given Yo's info about camshaft timing, they could be related I suppose. I have my cam timed straight-up, and I plan to swap on my old P90 soon, but I may play a little with initial ignition timing.
yo2001
There was a website that posted all the cams from L series but I lost it when I crashed my PC. I didn't believe it so I got both cam (P90 and P90A) and compared it next to each other. Sure enough, the P90A cam's lobes are visually advanced. Cody 82 ZXT
I've heard the same thing about the P-90a cam being advanced. Also the timimg spec on the 81 is 20* and the 82/83 is 24*.
Jersey
Cody - i believe only the '83's are 24* and both the '81 & '82 are 20*. Wish i had my cam out of my '82L28ET P90 right now because i have my cousins '83L28ET P90a cam sitting on the bench. I could've snapped some comparison pics of it to post. If i can find some good shots of a P90 cam on the net, i'll try and duplicate the picture using the same angle of the P90a cam.
Lockjaw
There are 3 turbo cams. Look on the back of the cam for a letter stamped there. The J grind is 81-82 manual transmission, B grind is 81-82 auto, and the M is 83 manual and auto. There is not enough difference in them to matter, but for what it is worth, I was running the B grind, and have not come across a J yet. All 3 cams are interchangeable. Where you run into issues is using an aftermarket cam with a hydraulic (note proper spelling) head. Unless everything is just right, get ready to buy a new cam.
