The only thing I think they should change is the taillights, to look a little more like the origonal, and maybe lighten it up with sharper corners to look a little nimbler. For one... even though they have so obviously tried to incorporate cues from past generation mustangs, I feel like if I saw that driving down the street and no one told me what it was I would have no idea what I was looking at. The proportions seem all wrong to me. The front seems too big... like it's just ready to swallow up whatever is in front of it. But contrast that to a slim side profile... It looks like they took a current generation mustang (which I do happen to like the way it looks) and started to do that computer-morphing effect into an old 64 mustang and the computer got stuck half way in the middle... and while it does have some of the features I like from both cars, it doesn't seem to mix them together well. Sorry dude... but you know what they say, to each his own.... not everyone is gonna like the look of that car. It does look a LITTLE bit better on that magazine cover that Aux posted. The engineers might hear what you guys are saying and change things. I think it's better than the current model, but agree the front needs a little more 'classic' influence. I saw it on TV and I think it looked a little different (better) than the pictures referenced in this thread. Remember, it's the 2005 concept model, not 2004 production model. They take an old classic design and build it again? The Ford GT is not even a change from the original body 30 years ago or whenever. The original was badass because it was spanking ferraris, so the chucklehead running ford now decides instead of coming out with a new sports car that will spank ferraris, he'll just remake an old one. I know the GT is fast and all, but it's just not right man. It's a rip off. It's just as bad as a kit car owner claiming his car is authentic because it looks like the original. Kind of looks to me like they are headed in the same direction with the new mustang, and while it definitely is an improvement on the current one, i looks like ass compared to the original 65 or whatever year they modelled it after. I dont want to drive a ford but if i have to, make it a 289 mustang from the old days. At least i could have a little self respect while driving it. I do ramble sometimes huh? just my 2 cents. I do love the look of the early first gen stangs and to see so much of that being revived is a step in the right direction. Since the Miata (reminicent of old British sports cars) and most especially the New Beetle, the other car companies have finally taken notice and are starting to see the potential of retro design cars. Why? Because they sell. I for one think they look great in general. The Ford GT 40 is nearly the same exterior design as the old car because it is simply one of the best racing designs ever made on a car IMO. Originally, it probably didn't have any door panels, cover on the dash, carpeting, or other interior stuf, plus no body-side nouldings or bumpers. I haven't seem any cutaway views of what's under the skin, but I suspect that there are bumper-things under there, plus the interior looks like a regular car with nice carpet, leather! seats, HEATER & RADIO...... Leather seat on a "race car" ?? Radio?? Probably has a/c too. Well, if somebody wants to buy THAT, they can. I would rather have the stripped version, even if it's a little uncomfortable to drive. Michael Posted January 2, 2004 Share Posted January 2, 2004 I saw a 2005 Mustang concept car at the D.C. Auto Show last week. While hardly a beauty, it looks considerably better in "real life" than in photographs, especially from the side view. My main gripe is about the front end; the forward rake can't be good for airflow over the hood. To me, it's a definite improvement aesthetically over the current model. One advantage is fewer fake scoops, vents and bulges. But no doubt there will be bad news about the weight. "Retro" designs are invariably heavy, and this one promised to turn out like the Thunderbird. By the way, the new GT40 is stretched by about 12" over the original. Do you have any figures on weight? Due to contemporary safety regulations and such, I wouldn't expect it to be as light as the original car. If you think it's heavy, wait for the convertable car to come out! (Non-purists feel the need to have a convertable car ) Just as long as it never gets 4 doors!
