WOW... that was quite the retro blast..... we had some asian students at my highschool that were doing things like that.... but they stopped taking those cars to school.... vandalism and harrassment, I believe...

That was back in the early 80's tho... never imagined I would see it again.

Just to stop the huge misunderstanding that's going on at that board from happening here. The oil coolers on the outside and pole-vault looking exhaust pipes (aka take-yari, etc) went OUT of style in the way early 80's.

I still get one or two weirdos asking me if my wife wears a kimono at home and do I have a sword in the house...been watching too many samurai movies I guess  (oh yeah, as an Asian, Lost in Translation sucked big time!!!! )

If you drove around like this now, people would be staring at you (from far away) as if you just got the chicken-flu on a trip back from China.

He mentioned Bosouzoku, which are essentially ricers from back then who were determined to make their cars unique no matter what. More show than go, and a lot of the people were called yankees (after the term Yankee, why, I don't know....most likely everyone was trying to be James Dean, etc.)

Anyway, it seems like a lot of them still have their cars, they're probably pretty old by now (the owners, I mean). I remember looking at magazines like Young Auto and Champ Road which were THE Turbo Magazines at the time :D These cars are museum pieces! And I bet this gathering was a nostalgic reunion.

I like the yellow Z tho, modeled after Akira's Yankee Mate Z in the comic Shakotan Boogie published in the early 90s.

Some of the cars at the time were built for speed, and the Yankee Mate Z was definitely one of them.

Now of course, every Z owner want to be like the Wangan Midnight Z :D

Too bad you can only see the yellow g-nose in 2 and a half of the pictures, and only one decent shot of it and its from straight in front.. I would have liked to see more! you can kind of see it from the side in the first 2 pictures hiding behind all the junk....
