hard suspensions?

so i'm planning my routes for this s30. n i think i'm gonna just make it straight track car. But i can't find any full aluminum bushings for it. The energy suspension set is polyurethane. That's not hard enough for my liking :P anyone found any that they would like to share?

also, i can't seems to find any hard suspension or coilover kits. Well, there isn't really much coilover kits out there, they're all custom kits. But i want to find one with spring rates of like 6 kg/mm (front) and 8kg/mm (rear).

i guess that would be... about 335lb/inch(F) and 450b/inch® if my calculations are right

the 335lb/inch is easily obtainable from modern motorsport, even though that's just not really stiff enough for me. Where could i find some with 450lb/inch spring rates? I'm gonna make this car a driftgrip car, so i need something hard. If i can find a set, i'd go for 810 rather then 68.

810 would be....500lb/inch and 560lb/inch i suppose.

yes i know i'm stupidly retarded to have it this hard. But that's why it's a track car. :P

TIA :)

you are really going to have to re enforce the rails and put a very good cage in it or you will fracture the unibody

Agreed.

As far as the 'hard' coilover kits, AFAIK none of them have soft bushings/mounts. The Carerra one certainly doesn't. You should be able to get the spring rates that you are looking for from anybody that supplies 2.5" id springs. Eibach and Carerra both carry these.

And, unless you're installing an 8 to 12 point roll cage in the S30, the spring rates you mention will make it a very poor handling "track car." Use the search function on this site.

Also agreed - I just wasn't going to go into that...

actually. i am caging the car out :)

making it all chromed out cage bling bling yo!

j/k

but it is gonna have the whole entire body stiffen up. Planning on things like putting in those body panel filler and such.

:)

timz, i can't seems to find anyone who supplys those brands you listed for the 280z. any websites?

Once you go to 2.5" id coilovers, the only "kit" that you are likely to find will be for the spring perches and upper mounts. In addition to adjustable ride height and cornerweighting, one of the main points of the coilover suspension is to allow you to spec your own springs, and that is exactly what you will have to do. There won't be a size that says "for Datsun 280z" - you have to spec the spring by rate, id, free length, and bound length.

Here is Eibach's application guide:

http://eibach.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.exe/00205.11.6568698995900031888

...if you look at some of the other links on the left side of the page, they have some info on how to select the correct spring for your application.

Here is a link to a place that sells Carrera and AFCO springs:

ahyc84, just a technical note to you regarding the chroming of a structural member...ie; rollcage, rollbar, suspension components, ect!!! The process for applying chrome will make those parts more brittle and hench more likely to fail. It is not a good practice to chrome structural and safety related components...espcially on a dedicated race car! Just paint or powdercoat it and be assured of maximum strength and safety. Just my 2 cents worth.

My car came with 500 lb/in springs and that was just stupid stiff. IMHO it was actually unsafe on the street because there wasn't enough compliance and the car tended to just skip around bumps. If you are planning ANY street driving I would highly recommend against this stiff from my limited experience. I imediately replaced them with 225F/250R which is a popular choice for street/track use and from the limited time I've driven since then it seems much better.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I don't know this for sure but I don't even think a chromed cage will pass a safety inspection for those classes requiring a cage.

I thought he was just talking about chromoly...

If ya want chrome, try mirrachrome instead, it's just paint.

Could make it out of polished 304 stainless.

Why yes you could! Figure about $6.00 to $10.00 per foot for 1.5" OD .120 wall tubing. You'll need about 50' of the stuff for a simple cage and you'll need .080 thick stainless sheet for the mounting points. Figure $300 to $500 for the materials.

Then you need to bend it, which can really suck with stainless because the stuff is tough and work hardens quickly. If you pay someone to bend it, figure $25 per bend (if you're lucky) and you'll need about 10 bends. That's another $250. Most bending shops have a minimum setup fee of $300 if you provide them with a template or a CNC program.

When it comes time to weld it you need to purge the tubing with Argon to keep from sugaring the inside of the weld. You'll also need to use 308L filler and make sure everything is really clean. Again, if you pay someone to do the welding figure at least $1,500.

My guess would be a simple 6 point 304L stainless cage with door bars would be $2,100 to $2,300 minimum if you had someone do it.

After looking at the material specs for 304L tube, I would never build a safety structure out of it. 30ksi yield is less then even 1010 crapo steel. Also, the only seamless (non-welded) 304L in the dimensions and thicknesses that I could find is military spec 8504 and when I asked for a price, the suppliers said, "How many tons are you ordering?"

As you can see, its a little slow this afternoon... :)

30ksi would still be preferable to the unkown value a chromed cage would have due to hydrogen embrittlement. And $2300 is small change when in the pursuit of maximum bling :) Plus the 500 psi springs might stress the chrome cage to the point where chrome might start to flake off..... How many want to get in on a group buy for mil spec stainless?
