Miata mirrors or other mirror options?

Does anybody have a picture of a 240Z with Miata mirrors installed? I'm looking for a high quality set of mirrors for my Z. I did a search but most of the picture links are no longer available. Also, does anybody know of a source for a right hand 240Z mirror that looks like the stock left one? How about the MSA California style mirror. Any installed pictures? Are these good quality? Thanks

As for a right hand mirror to match the stock 240Z left hand, why not use a 240Z left hand on the right side? I was planning on doing this and did not see a reason why it would not work. I think the mirror part itself rotates completely around so the shape of the mirror is oriented correctly.

I will be following this as well, and I would like to see mirror options also. I really like what Pete did with his Tercel (I think) mirrors.

I don't know...I find they look to big for the car.

I'm using the California style mirrors, they look good on the car, but the mirrors are a little small to see well, especially on the passenger side. So I added a 3" convex mirror on the passenger side ( out side edge), and added a 2" convex mirror on the drivers side ( inside edge ). Now i have no problems seeing anything coming from behind, and it doesn't look to bad.

Well iflyfast, with my do over on my Z. I'm closing all the mounting hole in the doors and I'm going to install these http://www.carjunky.com/accessories/ mirrors. There a good quaility IMHO, and you can get the a Advance or Auto Zone. I test fitted them to my car and there won't be to hard to install with some know how I'm making the an mounting/support bracket to install them. This is just another avenue for you to look into.

As far as the OE mirror for the passenger side, "Jolane" is correct. I did this on one of my 240s many years ago. Just swivel the mirror over, drill the hole (farther forward than driver's side if you want ANY visibility), and mount.

Many, many versions and interpretations of 'appropriate' mirrors have been used (look through the "album"); but, you either choose function (visibility) or form (proportion or 'scale' to the lines of the car). The latter is obviously VERY subjective, as some use Indy car sized mirrors while others use pickup truck sized mirrors...and everything in-between.

The look that I have stuck with on the last couple of 240s that I have 'done' have been the Talbot knockoff 'bullet' type mirror. They have good scale to the car, similar roundness of 'lines'; BUT, piss-poor function. For that I use an improved rear view mirror ("objects are closer than they appear"...) which is about 6-8" wide.

Mike Kz: How's the quality of the California style mirrors? I checked your site and couldn't find any pictures. Do you have any pictures? Thanks

240Z2NV,

You mention moving the passenger mirror forward for better visibility. I will have to patch the holes in my doors anyways (they are 260 doors with different mirror mounting holes), so should I move both driver and passenger forward? I guess I don't quite understand why moving the passenger mirror forward will help, unless it is so the driver can see past the passenger.

Thanks,

Joshua

The Driver's side is fine, relative to the seating position; but, for decent visibility on the Passenger's side, relative to the Driver's line-of-sight, you will find it better to move it as far forward on the door as possible. Many late model cars have slightly varied mirrors driver's vs. passenger's (Mercedes is the first one that comes to mind).

I can't explain it very well, so my easiest suggestion would be to duct tape the mirror in the 'approximate' spot, then sit in the seat and check your field-of-view. In my experience doing the OE mirror 'switch', I got the best view with the mirror about 3" forward of the placement point on the Driver's side as I recall (ymmv).

I wish that I could elloquently convey viewing angles, seating position, area to be viewed, etc.

They are not bad, made of plastic, but don't vibrate. They have a tinted mirror, and are easy to install. I don't have any close up pics, but I can take a couple tonight and post it.

Thanks 240Z2NV! That is a great idea about taping the mirror in place and testing! All I need now is a seat, seat brackets, mounts, etc... I guess mirror mounting is going to be put to the back of the line for now.

Thanks Again,

Joshua

Those mirrors in MikeKZ's post USED to be called "Vittaloni 'California'" mirrors IIRC. They were sold at generic autoparts chains like PepBoys, Schucks, Kragen.... Didn't think that they made them still, I remember them from like 20+ years ago. Maybe try eBay, or google "vittaloni".......

I've used ford Falcon XB OR XW mirrors for mine.

I would post a pic but for some reason I am not permitted to post attachments (anybody know why?) but have a look at the recently posted pics in member galleries and you can see them.

Note: the painter accidently put the mirrors on the wrong sides so imagine them swaped around.

I got this idea from Jim Biondo: 1995-97 Toyota Tercel DX mirrors

http://alteredz.com/image/body/mirror_installed_frtv.jpg

I have a writeup with pictures on how I did it here:

http://alteredz.com/TercelMirrorMounting.htm

Personally, I think they fit the styling of the car well, don't vibrate and have a large enough glass spot to be usable.

Especially if you adjust your mirrors the intelligent way:

http://www.smartmotorist.com/mir/mir.htm

"Exterior rearview mirrors - As for the side view mirror or mirrors, most people adjust them so they can see the side of the car on the inside edge of the mirror. If you adjust your mirrors using that criteria, are you aware of the huge blind spots that you've created? (Now is the time to take another look at the animated diagram at the top of the page.) Consider the view when the side view mirrors are set up as just described. Essentially, you have created "tunnel vision" to the rear. Your side view mirrors overlap much of what your inside rearview mirrors sees and you've also created blind spots. What in the solution to tunnel vision and blind spots? Simply adjust the side view mirrors just beyond the point where you could see the side of the car on the inside edge of the mirror. With this setup, you almost completely solve the blind spot problem. It takes a little while to get used to, but it is an improvement. Some quick tips: For the driver's side mirror: Place the side of your head against the window, then adjust the mirror until the side of your vehicle comes into view. For the passenger's side mirror: While sitting in the driver's seat, lean to the right so that your head is in the car's centerline. Adjust the mirror until the side of your vehicle comes into view."

Sorry, a bit of a rant on a favorite peeve of mine about cars. I get in cars my work has in it's motor pool and the mirrors are always adjusted in the "too narrow" configuration. Redundant data is nice (what is directly behind you) but adjusting the side view mirrors to see a copy of that and leaving blind spots to the side of the car is unintelligent and dangerous IMO.
