AK-Z
I was thinking about using a pare of stepside truck bed fenders and start adding metal here and taking away there ect. I know its alot harder than it sounds. Has anyone made there own?
frank280zx
yep, and i can tell you, it is so much more work than i suspected, but well worth it in the end.. i hope i used z31 flares on mine

Zhadman
I was thinking about using a pare of stepside truck bed fenders and start adding metal here and taking away there ect. I know its alot harder than it sounds. Has anyone made there own? So... do you want to completely fabricate your own from the ground up or do you want to modify something that already exists to fit? Either way... it's ALOT of work. I'm currently modifying the Victoria British Flares to fit my application... and it's a pretty time/labor intensive job. What makes it easier, though, is that the VB's are already setup to match the shape of the car where the flares meet the body. Saves a bunch of time. Anything is do-able. EZ-E
Not to hijack the thread, but that does look good frank what you did with your ZX. I like that look, I was thinking if it would work, but with AE flares insted on the rear. As I can see it does and its a good job.:
Oldestzguy
Darn, I knew someone would beat me to the punch on an idea I had before I could actually put it in place. See my recent response to this subject under OLD IMSA FLARE / BODY KIT thread. IMHO, great idea on many grounds!
SBC_400
I did mine using stock replacement pannels and an english wheel
Zhadman
I did mine using stock replacement pannels and an english wheel That rear quarter is flat out awesome! I'm Lovin' it!
boodlefoof
Ditto awesome job SBC 400! There is a good writeup on how to give stock sheetmetal fenders a nice bulge by cutting, bending and welding in patch panels on the Gale Banks website. They have a project Camaro that is getting their twin turbo treatment and in the bodywork section they show a step by step... You can find the info at... http://www.bankspower.com/camaro-FrontFenders.cfm I was considering going that route, but decided that fiberglass would be easier. Oldestzguy
Very very nice. Couldn't be better. I wish I had those skills. By the way, what wheels are those? Size, bolt pattern, etc. I really love the "business" appearance of them. They look like Centerlines. tks, John
SBC_400
thanks guys. I am in the process of re-doing all of it. not sure what I am doing on the rear, but I am going to do a little re-working of the fronts. the wheels are centerline 15 X 10 rear and 15 X 8 front with custom center caps. they will be for sale soon as I am going with 17x11 and 17x9.5 for the new chassis
DavyZ
thanks guys. I am in the process of re-doing all of it. not sure what I am doing on the rear, but I am going to do a little re-working of the fronts. Redoing what looks perfect?!?!??? Man, I wish I could have the skill to "redo" my Z! I love the lines and aggressive look of the car...kinda Mad Max like, only cleaner. Hypertek
If you are looking for a mild set up.. I suggest rolling/pulling the fender.. We did mine with a baseball bat to my 240sx. Done to fit wider wheels. Before when it was damaged http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/DSC00552.jpg Repaird http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/100_0420.jpg After the pull http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/100_0516.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/100_06082.jpg Don't mind the negative camber, its til I get adjustible control arms. I actually dont know if it would work on a Z tho... might "dimple" above the arch.
SBC_400
Redoing what looks perfect?!?!??? Man' date=' I wish I could have the skill to "redo" my Z! I love the lines and aggressive look of the car...kinda Mad Max like, only cleaner. Davy[/quote'] looking perfect is quite a different thing from being perfect. the picture of it in black is before I tore it appart. the body work was good but the chassis had some issues that I didn't find untill I stated doing more suspension work. so the picture of it on the jig are where its at right now. I got a solid roller and cut it apart and am building a full tube chassis with corvette suspension. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=99919
Sparks280zt
EvilRufusKay made his own metal YZ's, looked pretty sweet http://users.adelphia.net/~evilrufuskay/1975_280z.htm
boodlefoof
SBC 400, Sounds like you and I are in the same boat... I'm going to be building a tube frame and plan on grafting in some C5 front suspension pieces and building a 3-link with a solid axle out back. Keep me posted! I'd love to see your ideas. Bluto
SBC 400, Your project is awesome, is there any chance of seeing it up close and personal? I would be very grateful for even a quick walkthrough and a few questions. I am not planing anything of this magnitude but I would love to see how you have gone about planing, jiging, and building the car.. what tools you have on hand etc. Thanks, Sam
Mikelly
I wish one of you guys would try the corvette rear suspension as well... C5 parts are reasonably cheap and plentiful! The rears are pretty damned strong too! SBC400, those flares are simply awesome! Mike
boodlefoof
I have toyed with using the C5 transaxle and driveshaft tube... but with the rear axle centerline so close behind the driver, packaging might be difficult. I don't think shortening the torque tube would be too difficult though... Also, not to knock the C5 at all, but I'm not certain to what extent the rear suspension could be improved upon... they may have had some design constraints in putting it together. Don't know yet if a well-designed 3-link would be better or not.
SBC_400
another interesting rear end would be the viper rear end, similar in design to the c5, but not a trans axle. I looked into the c5 for a bit but it was too expencive for me so I stayed with all c4 components. I toyed with at solid rear end, and using a truch are type locator, but he short wheel base of the z makes it not a good idea, it realy messes with arc points and roll centers.
