Wheel Dollys Question

wheel dollys

are a tool that many shops use that allow you to slide the car in any dirrection easily so you can effectively move cars and maximize the use of floor space, with cars on wheel dollys you don,t even need to allow room to open the doors between cars as you can easily slide the car in and out of location with a carefully guided shove.

but like all tools theres a vast differance in quality between the differant styles/types available.

around the shop its frequently a P.I.T.A. to move cars around to get the necessary room to do some types of work if you have limited floor space as most of us know.

now one neat little semi- fix is to put the cars your not currently working on , on wheel dollys that allow you to slide the car forward, back, sideways, diagonally ETC. without needing to find the keys or push in back and forth several times to get the angles correct, so many of the better shops have wheel dollys in use.

they come in vastly differant QUALITY ranges and price ranges

heres a few, notice the differance in the carry capacitys

Harbor Freight may not have high quality dollies, but what they do have a wide selection of low cost casters

I don't have any experience with car dollies, but I have made enough movable work benches and tool dollies to know wheel diameter is what makes all the difference in how easy somthing is to roll over a dirty shop floor.

Get the 5", 330# swivel casters from HF for $5 each, weld together a rectangle of used 2" pipe from a salvage yard and you will have a custom fit set of 4 dollies for less than $100. Should handle 1200# each. Get a little more creative and you can make a bolt on attachment that connects to the lug nuts and allows the car to be moved without tires.

Or better yet, I found some old shopping carts dumped in the woods. Would be easy to use those casters to make it a $20 project.

I have the HF ones as well and they are worth the $80 althought they could be better!

There is a guy on EBAY making some out of 1/4" plate with nice casters that looked really nice but your floor better be darn close to level if the casters are REALLY good :)

I also have the cheapo H.F. dollies, and while they leave a bit to be desired they are worth the money if they are not going to see constant use. I have a feeling that with some better castors they would be much more pleasurable to use.

dont get me wrong though, If I had the spare cash I would have loved to have a really nice set like these http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_3000&L2=L2_3030&SKU=77730. we had those had the shop I worked at and they are heavenly!

The Go-Jaks are the cat's meow. I used them before and after I bought my HF cheapo's and put them to use, I felt ill. It's NO Go-Jak :( The original is steep, but if you can afford it they move much easier, and are much faster (heavier too) moving vehicles around because they have the jack built right in, cutting a step from the simple dollies. There was a company (can't remember) that made a yellow colored knock-off that sold for about %40 less. Think they were on ebay, but never used them.
