I refuse to buy either until the war is over. I think hd dvd is the way to go though because blue rays' format is a pain apparently. Still though I think its a waste of money. Its going to be laser disk all over again. A new option will come out negating both.

I'm with TeamNissan - wait to see who wins, HD-DVD vs. BetaRay. I also think HD-DVD is both cheaper and better but just wait. However, so you can enjoy your new HD TV, buy an upconverting DVD player like an OPPO or Helios H4000 http://www.helios-labs.com/us/products/index.shtml

I have a Helios H4000 that I bought from Amazon for $149 (and free shipping). It's an amazing machine! The OPPO is usually slightly higher rated but it doesn't have HD 1080P through the component output. I need that for my projector since it doesn't have HDMI.

PS3 with bluray

I decided to go with one for Christmas. After analizing everything I went with Blu-Ray with a PS3.

I don't care about the gaming though, but here is what I found out:

Bluray out selling HD about 85% in the rest of the world, 75% more in US.

Bluray players are made by more companies, than HD is made by. (longevity)

More Blue Ray disks made.

Bluray has better video and sound than HD because of larger disk capacity.

Toshiba lowerd its HD player to $100-$200 dollars, with a 1080I (no not 1080P !!) but analysts say that they are bleeding themselves out trying to catch up, and they can't do this much longer.

PS3 got best reviews for being a blu ray player. Magazines and bluray.com voted it #1 in 2007

PS3 upgrades over flash drive or internet. They just made it V1.1 complient.

In order to get what the PS3 bluray will do you have to spend 400 more on stand alone player. PS3 is $399 or $499. If you have PS2 games then get the better $499 model. It plays PS3 games also, the $399 one doesn't.

Bad about PS3, remote is bluetooth so your Harmony remotes won't controll the PS3, you have to pay out $20 for the Sony bluetooth dvd remote.

Well thats the jest of what I read/saw/did. Go to www.bluray.com and read up on some of this too.

Good luck!

You may want to read this article which appears in today's San Jose Mercury News: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_7798076?source=rss

Some key points to note is that the current, low quantity of HD DVD movie titles available are relatively expensive. Whatever format you choose may be obsolete in a year or so. That may leave you with a bunch of expensive DVDs that are only good for drinks coasters and useless DVD player.

I am going to hold off on going the HD DVD route for now. I bought an OPPO DV-981 HD up-converting DVD player. This thing is absolutely amazing. Picture and sound quality embarrass $1000+ units and it cost $229! For that kind of money, I can wait until the HD format war is settled and I still have a killer DVD/CD/SACD/DVD audio player with the OPPO.

Here's OPPO's URL:

Good luck. It's a frustrating time for consumers. I'm dying to upgrade the video portion of my home theater, but I know that prices will drop a whole bunch once the US completes the switch to ATSC.

I have the 981 and the 980 They are both fantastic player. I use the 981 for movies and the 980 for SACD's. The 980 puts SACD/DVD-A across the HDMI cable in a RAW format. My Onkyo TX-SR805 decodes it in true DSD. It is unbelievable sounding!

I tell people all of the time that aren't sure to get a Oppo player. The upversion to 1080P is amazing.

Well I can't wait for ME, I mean Santa Claus tomorrow to open my Bluray player!!!! :)

Sony invented Bluray and charges a license fee to anybody that builds a Bluray device just like the old days with Beta. So most Bluray machines will probably always cost more. Things are a bit different this time since Sony sells the PS3's and owns a movie studio. However, Microsoft went with HD-DVD so their huge presence and weight might help HD-DVD win.

BTW, Wal-Mart was selling Toshiba HD-DVD players for $199 just before Christmas. And don’t let anybody tell you there is much of a difference between 1080i and 1080p. Go see for yourself. Even side by side the human eye can not tell the difference.

naviathan makes an excellent point. VHS won the war against Betamax in large part because the porn industry got behind VHS and published a ton of material.

I would definitely wait or you run the chance of wasting your money on the machine AND all the movies you buy.

Seriously, buy an OPPO, Helios or any other upconverting DVD player!
