JeffGarcia77
Has anyone here re-mounted an L-24 -26 -28 further back in the chassis? It looks like there is an extra 2" or more between the firewall and the cam cover/bell housing. You might need to modify or remove the hood catch bracket, and possibly reposition the brake lines which run across the firewall near the rear of the head. "Why bother?" you may ask. It would move the mass of the engine and transmission closer to the center of the car, and make more space available up front for fans, etc. Would also make it easier to work on the front of the engine. Of course, one might want to change to a short-nose differential, to maintain a sufficiently long driveshaft to keep the u-joint angles happy. If you've done this, or seen it, please tell us what you know about the details, with pics if available.
JMortensen
Its commonly done in the GT classes. FP autoxers do it too. 2" back is the rule limit for GT (or it used to be), but you can actually move it closer to 4" back before hitting the firewall. Here is an old thread dealing with the issue: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=85075 And here's what I got when I searched "setback" in the 6 cylinder forum (the L6 forum was a later division of the 6 cylinder forum, I guess not everything got transferred over). Searching using the google search: http://www.google.com/custom?client=pub-3543793485173468&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT%3A%23008000%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23336699%3BVLC%3A663399%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BALC%3A0000FF%3BLC%3A0000FF%3BT%3A000000%3BGFNT%3A0000FF%3BGIMP%3A0000FF%3BLH%3A50%3BLW%3A126%3BL%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fforums.hybridz.org%2Fimages%2Fmisc%2Fvbulletin3_logo_white.gif%3BS%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2F%3BFORID%3A1&domains=forums.hybridz.org%3Bclassifieds.hybridz.org%3Balbum.hybridz.org&hl=en&q=l6+setback&sitesearch=forums.hybridz.org You'll have to dig around a bit. I know preith has some pics, maybe he'll share... http://forums.hybridz.org/search.php?searchid=2180631
JeffGarcia77
Thanks Jon! That's great info. I never thought to search on "setback". Happy 4th. Jeff

Administrators BRAAP Posted July 5, 2008 Administrators Share Posted July 5, 2008 not sure whose Z this is... but I saved this pic awhile back... That was one of Ron Tylers projects. Here is another pic…
JeffGarcia77
Wow! That's taking it to the limit! I guess the engine itself takes the place of the heater. (I know, a dedicated, single purpose race car). So how did it handle? Jeff
JeffGarcia77
Yup, I saw some of MONZTER'S posts, his engine is set back 3/4". I REALLY like his transmission mount.

Careless
wow... where the hell is the shifter on Tyler's project? lol remote shifter? It's located in between the tool boxes, and the tool boxes themselves have been turned into fold up seats with polka-dot upholstering. Careless
seriously though, that's nuts. if I wasn't running longer runners on my project, I would consider it... I still might. hmmmmmm
JeffGarcia77
So, I'll try moving my engine back about 3-3.5 inches, but I also want to change over to a 240SX 5-speed, which is about 2 inches longer than my Z trans. The 240SX shifter might end up quite a ways back from the stock location (meaning console modification work), but it would be welcome, because I tend to sit pretty far back from the shifter anyway. Anyone (Prieth?) have any pics of a moderate L-series setback? Jeff
gregkring
I'm planning on setting mine back about 2 inch. Will put my T5 shifter perfectly in the console where it belongs and maybe even give room for a short throw if I feel the need. Better benefit will be plenty of room for a good sized electric fan and a two row pulley. Right now I have about 1/2 inch between the taurus fan and my pulley. MONZTER
Yup, I saw some of MONZTER'S posts, his engine is set back 3/4". I REALLY like his transmission mount. Hi Guys, I moved mine back as far as I could without removing the hood latch, or having to cut up the car. My purpose was not for weight distribution, but to make more room for the cold air intake, radiator fans/balancer, and to smooth out the bends to the turbo and intercooler. 3/4 was the max I wanted to go, which was enough for my needs mentioned above. Butters
So if your moving the engine back what about the transmission ears? I have been thinking about moving mine back but can't find anything about relocating them and makeing them stronger?
