turbojohnny
hey guys, i had posted on here before, but now i finally have my z, drove all the way down to Waco, Texas last week and brought it back up to NY. anyway, the car has the L28 with a BAE turbo kit on it, i can't seem to find any information on the setup, and i've never even heard of a RAJAY turbo before. is there any general knowledge that you guys can fill me in on while i keep searching? here are some pics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/26890451@N08/sets/72157619698922974/
turbojohnny
so nobody knows anything about the BAE turbo setup?

turbojohnny
also, i think i might have an exhaust leak? can you guys tell me what's making this noise?
woldson
Some kind of aux steam engine?? At frist it seemed that the sound was not in "sync" with the engine rpms. Somehow I just want to say it is not a compression/ exaught leak, but it is too hard to say.
turbojohnny
hmm, well i posted on the zdriver forum and they seem to think it is air escaping from somewhere.
Tony D
You realize that the valve at the back of the J-Pipe is your boost control device, right? Failing having an external wastegate, the old systems like this would simply dump boost. If the thing is leaking, you get a terrible hissing noise... turbojohnny
i realize that, and that is not what's leaking, the sound seems to be coming from the front of the engine around the exhaust and intake manifolds, if it was a leaky intake manifold i would have a vacuum leak and it wouldn't idle smoothly, so i'm guessing it's an exhaust leak, if ony there was a dye you could put in your exhaust to show you where it's leaking. turbojohnny
maybe there is a carbon build up on the valve seats? the spark plug from the cylinder at the front of the engine, #6? looks like it's not firing properly.
1 fast z
How is the extra fuel added with this setup?
turbojohnny
your guess is as good as mine. i don't know much about these cars yet. my other cars are a '95 saab 900 se turbo, and an '82 pontiac trans am with a vortec 5.7 motor, these straight 6 motors are a whole new monster to me, but nothing i can't handle. I see a Hobb switch wired to a cold start injector, this would add a nominal amount of extra fuel. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/rajay.php http://www.kellyaerospace.com/articles/Turbocharging.pdf You can still get some rebuild parts for the old Rayjay turbos, using a stock turbo exhaust manifold as some of the Rayjay turbos used a T3 flange which will bolt to the stock manifold. A rising rate fuel pressure regulator ( as much as I don't like them) would supply fuel to the stock injectors and evenly distribute the fuel supply under boost. http://www.lextreme.com/FMU.htm I remember "back in the day" several VW guys using Rayjay turbos with blow thru Delortos with decent results. For what it would cost for a aircraft rebuild kit, you could probably pick up a decent T3/T4 turbo. A box like this could be used to retard timing under boost. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850604/
turbojohnny
the turbo kit has been on the car for as long as i can remember, since before my uncle even bought it. unless you're suggesting ways to improve the system, to the best of my knowledge it all works fine. Jesse OBrien
That sounds EXACTLY like Gollum's l28et that just has a leaking exhaust manifold. If it isn't seated on the head correctly, it's sputter with every revolution. It's not a problem with his, and won't be a problem on yours unless it were on the intake side. That would make you run lean. ... based on how rich your plugs look, I'm guessing you're rich. You definitely have a leak, it could even be on the cold side of the turbo. Can you feel where the air's escaping from? ... it could also be your EGR, unless it's capped off.
turbojohnny
i can't really feel where the air is escaping from because the fan keeps blowing over the engine, i'll have to stop the fan and see if i can feel it leaking. also, i know in the pictures there are no clamps on the charge pipe from the turbo to the TB, but that's not the problem. I had pulled the pipe to clean it up a little and didn't put the clamps back on right away.
turbojohnny
the egr isn't capped off, but it doesn't sound like it's leaking back there, it sounds like it's leaking more towards the #1 cylinder
softopz
wouldnt hurt to put some ne NGKs and change gasket. That will be a huge improvement and a good start.
rossman
I had a similar setup on my old 280z. There is a thread with a link to pictures here: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=126119&highlight=school+turbo. The main differences are 1) The air flow meter was relocated in front of the radiator. 2) It had a rising rate fuel pressure regulator.
