RB26powered74zcar
I use this for anti virus>> http://www.avg.com/download-file-stb-triaav And this for spyware etc.>> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html Both are free but you can upgrade to paid service (that's me)
Tony D
Ditto, both those are on my corporate laptop from the corporate office. Run the AVG scan regularly! I don't go to a lot of places that should infect me. But if you have a porn proclivity...
Guest Rolling Parts
XP or Vista? Only way to idiot-proof it would be to log into the laptop with "guest" rights before surfing. You "switch user" to an account with zero privileges before surfing. You can then delete the profile after surfing so any malware stored there is deleted before it can be activated/used again... The new System 7 actually does that for you...
cygnusx1
AVG and SpybotSD. I agree, both have free versions that work great. I run them in parallel. Keep them updated regularly. I also keep Avira running in the mix (also free) but it pops up an ad once and a while to buy the full version. I might drop that one because of the ad. xchaosx
I've had success with adaware (lavasoft) and spybot s&d
judas_light
AVG is an Anti-Virus and Spybot is malware detection service; you still need a firewall to prevent yourself from even getting unsolicited entry to your computer. I would suggest Zone Alarm and set exceptions for programs you use all the time.
Careless
if you have spyware... start with malwarebytes.org and download the free version of their program. Not sure how the free one is, as I downloaded it last when there was no pro version. also, for anti-virus that seems to integrate with the new windows 7 or vista quite well, I use NOD32. it even tells me when windows itself needs an update... something i thought only the windows security center did. annnnnnnnnnd lastly, i use Outpost Firewall Pro... But it can get a bit more technical for the first 2 or 3 months. Lets just say I've never had a virus attack within the last 6 - 8 years, and malware has never existed for more than an hour (due to my stupidity) on any of my computers... figures. I let my guard down for one hour to play an online game with my brother and he sends me a link to a web page that had phishing software running in the background. Careless
btw, I've made tons of cash fixing ppls computers and I usually start with malwarebytes.org and it clears about 80% of the problem on the first run.

It won't do on the fly protection in it's free form, but on the other hand, it is robust enough that if you just run it once a week you won't have any problems. Also, the MWB support staff will help you with any problems it can't fix even if you have the free version.
