LS/T56/240z Project Mentor Wanted

Recommended Posts

The only thing I will do there is promise not to buy any more until these are all broken. I will probably use my 3.70 LSD as the case/carrier donor for the upcoming 3.18. 3.70 is kind of a limbo ratio for a higher horsepower Z car. I may let the 3.36 go at some point at a very high price-that diff took some work to get. But it would be a good auto cross diff for the way my local club sets up courses, so I dunno....I think I would let the Shiro VSD with axles go, but I might be greedy and try to get something like $1200 shipped. I think it's a 3.90, though. 3.90 is a good ratio for 1/4-mile at 126mph on 26" tires, but you are out of 1st and 2nd really quick. Probably not great ratio for a 150mph turbo car. That ratio is good for 150mph, but you'd need to get into 5th gear. I better save this for PMs or a classified ad before the moderators get me for thread jacking.

I finished a buddy's '66 Mustang up last Sat, paid a local shop to replace the delaminating harmonic balancer on my wife's Odyssey and I got lucky on the truck and repaired it today. The roll pin that attaches the hydraulic line to the slave cylinder had backed out and I was able to just push it back in with a long screwdriver. The remote bleeder worked like a champ and I'm back to the point that the Datsun is my only project. Hoping to get back on its front suspension work next weekend.

We like narrowing down the projects. Tooquick has all his cars running. 4 now,

But there is always the unknown. Projects change and keeling focused on one goal.

Son dragged me to pick n pay today. We yanked a rear axle out of a 94 pathfinder so he could put it in his 90 hardbody he just picked up.

Congrats on the record runs. Keep up the hard work.

I have the front crossmember slotted and most of the parts here to put the front end together.  Just a matter of making time.  Have ordered a couple of lifts for the new garage-one of which is an alignment lift.  Hoping to use that when the front suspension is put back together.  Don't know how long the lag will be between ordering the lifts and having them installed and ready.  Have bothered Rockland Standard Gear a bunch trying to learn about their custom-ratio T56 Magnum-they dont have a good way to make 6th gear a .75-ish ratio, so it looks like I'm staying with my current transmission.  I'm gonna be going with a 3.18 rearend ratio to take the car to 200mph.  Between that diff ratio and an S1 sequential shifter, dollar per dollar, it will be a break-even with getting a T56 Magnum, and perhaps less work, I was just really hoping to come up with a clutchless transmission.  I'm pretty sure all those Liberty, G-force and Jerico trannies use external shifter linkage, and I'd really like to stay with a top-loader style for simplicity/reliability.  I may be the first guy to buy one of the S1 Sequentials (really just a vertical gate shifter), but I don't want to bother them until I have the funds to commit.  I may still waste some time talking to Liberty about face-plating for my spare tranny.

Edit:  looks like a 3 week lag time on the order due to the size of the package (the lift, not mine).  Time to go review my aircompressor advice thread and start working on that.  Then all the big items are done.

Just found out that the regional Porsche club is gonna have their annual autocross here in Florence on April 15-16. I need a tough deadline to force me to get the blue car off the jackstands that it has been holding down since July. I'm gonna get back on the project of putting the front end back together to try to make that event. I need a kick in the pants of some kind. Talking to a couple of the turbo smart guys on the site about a turbo to go ahead and get so I can start planning some routing.

Car off stands and reassembled. Aligned on new lift. Ran autocross Saturday. Car did fine. Driver was average at best. Always lots of fun. Used lift to help fix a buddy's Mountaineer after church. Z is up on lift to pull gas tank for mods anticipating need for second fuel pump and to allow fabricator to instal parachute mount/trailer hitch. Gonna call him today to see what his backlog looks like. need to get chute on hand and rear spoiler installed prior to sending it off to him. Next milestone is Ohio Mile or GA 1/2-mile in Sep.

so you going to do anything to the motor in the between time?

say, Hawks headers, fast 102 intake (some used on eBay every now and then), cam, and a dyno tune?

Yes, turbo is a couple years down the road, but that's the plan. It will take one to go 200. The track record at Ohio is 244mph. Ordered the chute today from Stroud via Delaware Chassis Works.

No, I don't think so. All that work might get me to 180 or so. Lotsa money just to push the record up marginally. The next couple years will be chassis development only. Likely won't see the record go up unless someone else does it. I may take this power plant to Loring, Maine for a 1-1/2 mile run before pulling it. That would be 2 years, more safety, and a different diff ratio from now. Just gotta hope nobody else gets into the game by then. Once I go 200 with a turbo motor, I hope to put this stock motor back in it. I love this motor. 9 months on blocks and it started on the first crank.

Working on high speed stability as I prepare for the Ohio Mile. Drilled the rear hatch to be able to make a pass with no rear spoiler, then to quickly mount a small BRE-style spoiler for a pass, then to go on up to a larger rear spoiler. The BRE spoiler has 6 studs already bonded into it. The Larger spoiler came with 2 rivet nuts in it from the supplier. I drilled it and epoxied (10) 1/4" aluminum rivet nuts into it. This is the first mod I've made to try to get the car to go straight better. Next is to drop the fuel tank and to get it to my chassis guy to have the chute mount built. Pics to follow.

The wing itself is very rigid and well made, except that it is too close on the drivers fender. But mounting composites is always an issue. The rivet nuts insert into very thin carbon fiber (and) the deck itself is very flimsy in this area. And the doubler panel makes it hard to install hardware from the backside. I guess if it was easy, all the kids would be doing it. MiKelly installed the same or similar wing on his car with just the two bolts and silicone adhesive. Mine doesn't match the contour well enough to use adhesive, plus, I wanna be able to try different spoilers easily. 1 tuff z, I think this spoiler is similar to yours. With varying wind speed and direction it will be hard to provide perfect feedback, but I will do my best.

Keith, I have the same spoiler, in fiberglass.  Mine had to be clearanced on both sides to avoid quarter panel contact.  Instead of sealer I used a dense foam tape [like what is used to seal a truck cap to the bed] along the front and back edge, leaving a gap for the water to drain at the low point where the lock is.  I then purchased some large diameter washers as my backing plates.  A bit challenging to hold the washer in place and get the nut started but got it done.  I've noticed greater straight line stability at Watkins Glen but I only see a bit over 145 there, not the speeds that you'll experience.
