5 Stud Front Hub Conversion

Hi I’m new here but been scanning for some time now...

 

A bit of background to me. I’m currently doing a 260z 350 chevy conversion, I have decided to do this for the obvious reasons power to weight but also in Australia this is still fairly uncommon and i like to be a bit different.

 

Since I’ve had a spare 350 chevy, 9 inch diff, and muncie 4 speed laying around after doing up my current car I was searching for a suitable body that was light and would be able to be street registered with the gear I had on hand. After a lot of searching and decision making I decided on a Z for the fact of ease of install and in Australia it has been "rarely" done, so I bought a 1977 260z at a very reasonable price, a JTR handbook for the engine mounts and general walk through as it seem REALLY common in the US.

 

I opted for the 9 inch conversion for a few reasons 1 the obvious one I had it collecting dust and 2 the standard 260 wouldn’t hold up to the 280+ hp my engine put to the wheels of the old "doner" car. Now i have ford 5 stud pattern on the rear pretty sure its 5 x 114.3mm pattern as its a hybrid new falcon/old 9 inch diff, new falcon axles resplined to 28 to suit the centre and the axle tubes from the new matted to the old 9 inch there for having new ford wheel bearings and disk brakes and a really strong centre.

 

Sorry for the long intro but wanted to show my reasoning for the topic title and give all you HybridZ members a little on my build. Now I have a 5 stud rear and the standard 4 stud front.... now I know that the Toyota hilux 4x4 callipers bolt up to the 260z with little to no drama at all but what I want to know is are the whole hubs and disks compatible with the 260z??

 

Would really like some input on this/peoples experiences as i have scanned the forums for days and have come up with not much more than a few websites that sell 5 stud conversions for the standard 260z components at around 450 - 500 USD.

 

As one can grasp I’m TRYING to do a reasonably budget build although as always is slowly spiralling out of control it went from:

 

Buy car (all in AUD) ~$2500

JTR handbook - $ ~50 to 100

Engine mounts - $0

Engine - $0

Gearbox refresh - ~$250 (small parts kit) + idler and 1&2nd slider

Diff New Ford - $150

Diff Old 9" - $20 (Centre backlash after I fitted Detroit locker and 4.11)

Shortening/Aligning/Respline axles - $600

4 link coilovers and fitment - ~$2600

Drive shaft - ~$300

 

And the recoupe from the:

Standard engine 160HP (Claimed RWHP dyno sheet) - $400

5 speed gearbox - still to advertise

Standard diff - still to advertise

 

Would have been a cheap build BUT!

 

The Mrs couldn’t have me driving around in a fast car that looked like "****" in her eyes so...

Paint job - ~$2000 + (2000 hrs of bodywork well Feels like it anyways)

Interior - ~$500 (Know an appuluster)

Rims - ~$1500

Full autometer gauges - ~$1000

New bumpers - ~$800

Exhaust - ~$800 (Stainless mandrel-bent) she loves the shinny stuff

Flares - ~$250 (Big dish rims intended)

Front coilovers - ???

 

Kind of blew out the budget built.... What i would like to know is the most cost effective way of getting the same front stud pattern (Adjustable coilover preferable) that’s not to difficult to fit and obtain.

 

Keen to hear the answers as you lot seem knowledgeable, again sorry for the novel but would rather you know the foundation to the question and the intentions of the build.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?? I thought this forum was all about people that have the knowledge/experience helping others that don’t (amateurs like me)

To gain knowledge.

 

I have extensively searched the forums and have come up with nothing, can anyone give me something to go from? I’m sure this topic has been covered numerous times can someone link me to something that may give me some guidance?

From what I understand, the Z31 turbo 5-lug front hubs are compatible with the S30 front spindles.

 

I have a 5 lug front hub from an '87 Z31T in the garage right now that I will be checking this out to make sure it is true.

Most use the 5 lug 300ZX hub (it does have a 19mm offset). Staggered wheels could compensate for that. I have two different 300ZX hubs in my garage. The difference in how the seal is installed. I don't know what years (85 and 87, I think) they came from because I NEVER mark anthing for what it is. I'm using the later hub with the seal that mounts over a machined lip, not pressed into the hub.

Both seals have the same I.D. of 1.811 while the S30 has a slightly larger I.D. ( don't have that in front of me). It takes some effort to get the 300ZX hub over the S30 spindle. Some cut off the inner lip to make it easier. My intention is to machine a simple ring that presses over the machined lip of the later hub. The I.D. of that ring will accept the stock S30 seal. It will be a perfect fit and factory spec'ed.

 

The other option you have is contacting Ross and Moderm Motorsprots Limited. He produces a custom zero offset 5 lug hub for the S30 machined from billet aluminum.

The rears of the Datsuns are stronger than u might think. You can also just upgrade to a R200 very easy and not have to go with a 9". I've put a R200 in a few, and being near the 300hp mark never had a problem. In my LS1 project that should be about 450HP going to go with the R230 from the second gen 300zx and probably end up going with the hardened stub axles from Modern Motorsports.

I have a question, I just did the z31 pentagon hub swap with the JSK rotor hats and Wilwood calipers. I swapped out all the bearings and seats along with the seals. When I pieced everything together and put it on the spindle, the z31 hub doesn't slide in all the way. I have about a 1/4 o 1/8 gap. I installed everything correctly i am sure of it because its the gap is the same on both sides. Can anyone verify if this is correct?
