upbeatppl
I just came across a 1970 240z that a friend of mine have for sale, even though it has a pretty low vin # 6235. There are lots of rust under the doglegs (both sides), doors, near the gas door, rear hatch, battery tray. He's asking for $1700 for the car. I was thinking is this too much $ for the car in current condition? Please give me some advice, I would greatly appreciate thanks. rturbo 930
Where are you located? Can you weld and fabricate? Personally, I wouldn't touch that car.
Derek
Run away from that car. The only way you won't be revisiting the rust is if you strip the car and have it blasted. I have a rust car and the only reason I stuck with it is I already owned it. Derek

rturbo 930
i live in Califonia and it's very interesting that CA has this car this rusted out > There's plenty of nearly rust free examples in CA. Don't even give that car a second thought.
upbeatppl
thank you so much for the advice, i live in Milpitas, California. i was thinking if rust spot like that i can get fenders and doors from other Z cars from 70-77? i've double check the only rust problem is the exterior panels, no frame damage, it does have factory A/C, E31 cylinder head, everything is original including the spare tire hahaha. With this all been said do you guys still think the car worth it? thanks
Meph
that would be a mint car to find here. If you have some fabrication skill, a cheap hand held sandblaster/compressor and get it for 1/2 the asking price you might be alright
Nelsonian
Looks like from the provided pics, you would be in for a lot of rust repair. Alot of time and energy/work if you can do the work yourself, even more $ spent if not, which I'm only stating the obvious. I must imagine that the bushings, hoses, etc, are in need of replacing as well being an original car. There are still plenty of other good candidates all over California, that I personally would pass on that one.

With this all been said do you guys still think the car worth it? thanks You have rust in the doglegs, roof, hatch sill, fuel filler door, and somewhere near the battery tray and it looks like it got the frame rail as well. I PROMISE there will be more, and my car is a perfect example of that, and mine is arguably less rusty than that car as well, and I'm on the east coast. Unless you really want a big welding project (and there's nothing wrong with that), find another car. And to answer your original question, I would not pay $1700 for that car unless it was the only one left on the planet.
upbeatppl
Oh after a long hesitation about whether or not i should rescue the car I went a head purchase the car, his asking price is $1700 but after a long talk with him I was able to walk away with the car for $1200. On the way hauling it home we stop to get some food, immediately we saw there was a fire in the drive side brake caliber (the whole brake caliber turned red) we were like great now we have to call a tow truck :/ luckily after cooling it down with 4 bottles of water we got the fire to stop and able to free the wheel. so we continue on our journey, it's home safely... or not we realized the caliber is on fire again sigh.... so we got the hose to put out the fire. upbeatppl
After pushing the car in the garage, I was able to take a lot more pics of the car. Now I can see the car in a brighter environment. Immediately start to work on the car, spaying W40 to ease off some rust off.

upbeatppl
It took us a week to over haul the engine, and now we're starting on the the body work cutting out all the rust spots, treated, than apply POR15 over.

With this all been said do you guys still think the car worth it? thanks Be patient. I found a completely rust free 72 240Z in Santa Clara for $2,800. Runs perfect, perfect interior, and zero rust. Gotta just wait and search like I did for about 3 years before I finally bought mine.

Siberian Husky
can i come over and check your Z out? im jealous as f*** that you can weld and have the balls to take on this car despite everyones opinion on it. GOOD ****!
240zip
I admire what you're doing, but I would have media blasted the car to bare metal before doing the welding and other repairs. It's all going to come back. And since you already bought the car I'm not going to bother with my opinion on whether you should purchase it or not. I'm not a fan of the rust converter. I believe in media blasting then treating the bare unrusted metal and using an epoxy-based primer. If you're going to just drive the car on the street, it's not a big deal, but if you're going to do any spirited driving I'm not sure that your car will be safe given the extent of the rust you've shown.
