  1. The pictures attribute BRE and tend to simulate the BRE replica photos in the other post. BRE and Bob Sharp cages maybe very similar. What ever they are.... a good 30 year old design
  2. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6187&item=4557903257&rd=1
  3. Wait for your hood unless someone has a definite answer for you............The Z's may look similar but there are slight differences during the years and 1/2 inch may make a big difference
  4. I always wanted a dump bed.............Mike... I would sleep in the truck the first few nights until you get it broke in.
  5. if racing aspirations do not materialize,.....he could retire it out back for a chicken coop... plenty areas for roosting
  6. You could probably with the inexpensive BOP to Chev adapter found in Jegs or Summitt use the 7004R tranny. I have seen nailhead parts on eBay. I had a 1965 Buick Sportwagon with the "nailhead" short stroke-high compression 300 cubic inch engine that would haul between 60 to 90 mph. This short stroke Buick engine was a few years before the Camaro Z 28 short stoke 302....Nailhead V-8's were a favorite swap engine because they would fit in about everything. The 300 cubic inch Sportwagon got 13 in the city and 17 on the highway.
  7. That VW part number only fits the 2 inch sectioned 280 struts and I do not know exactly what VW model they are. I went to a Volkswagon shop and they pulled out about 3 sets. Of the three, this set was "fat" and similar in diameter to the 280 Struts but of course 2 inches shorter. You use the 280 front strut cartridges in the 2 inch sectioned rear strut tubes. (and add an +/- i nch spacer at the bottom to make up for lack of height. If you look hard, eBay has individual Carerra, Afco, QA1 coilovers in stated weight sizes. I just bought a pair of 225 pound Hypercoil 10 inch coilovers for $20.50 plus shipping. I requested a price quote for a (4) upper hat and spring perch washer from Ross Corrigan but he has not replied. I placed a low bid on a pair of rear Honda coilovers (?) in hopes if low enough price I can see what kind of (size) coilover sleeves and nuts they have and if suitable for serious application
  8. The late 260 should have a 280 strut suspension. Lot of work and money to change to 240 struts unless you have a lot of 240 parts available for the conversion.
  9. White smoke..... head gasket leak right in the middle.........My 78 had the same symptons... It will get worse....the big problem is head bolts in the vincinty of leak become frozen and tend to break when removing head. Coolant never showed up in engine oil....the coolant is beeing burned with fuel and the reason for white smoke.
  10. and that folks is called "shotgun welding".....just hook up that positive cable to the right barrel and the negative to the left barrel and fire away.
  11. Keep doing it and something will give....One thing I know about old Datsuns as a general rule of thumb : 5 speed equiped cars usually have better engines and running gear because in fifth gear there is less wear and tear on everything...the engine does not work as hard at speed in 5th gear. Down shifting that way puts a lot of force and pressure on steel parts. You were working the vehicle hard and as a native Oregonian on mountain logging roads you do not start downshifting unless the brakes are smoking......LOL I probably tore up more rigs that most will ever drive. Now that I pay for it, I am very careful..Had a truck driver friend whose company truck motor was getting a lttle ragged. He geared it down on a steep hill and blew the motor (on purpose).
  12. BRE racing seat mount http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/detail?.dir=a6b1&.dnm=142d.jpg&.src=ph
  13. here are some Z roll bar cage details to go with the other photos and diagrams http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/a6b1&urlhint=actn,ren%3as,1%3af,0
  14. They used to push the clutch in> shift to nuetral> let clutch out>rev engine.push clutch in and downshift...was called "double clutching" and done when brakes were inefficient years ago. Cheaper to replace brakes than a transmission....
  15. There are fender mirrors and there are door mirrors......you have a door mirror..you can identify by the pecuniary radius on the vertical angle.........if yoiu have a traditional G nose with traditional flares then you obtain the traditional mirrors that are placed on the fenders followed by blue metal flake tape..
  16. On 2 inch sectioned 280 Z front struts a VW strut cartridge in the $50.00 range KYB GR2 #364014 fits like a glove in the sectioned 280 Z strut tube.....somewhere in the archive is a detailed how to I wrote on sectioning 280 Z struts 3 years ago which is now under anonymous I posted under Tomahawk Zee http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/392a
  17. For $350 the "wow figure" is prominent but the pita may prevail heavily in the back pocket. Bargain for them...The price may be worth an occasional installation later on for wow purposes but a single large 4 bbl would suffice for a mild build with all that ground splitting tourqe
  18. What you want is the nose of the cam lobe on first contact within .010 to .015 of the rocker arm pad and this can be remedied with different thickness of lash pads. This is the last job you can do and by visual inspection.. You do not want the side of the cam lobe prematurely contacting the end of rocker pad.
  19. The Z roof is soldered on and seams could be welded after removing solder....I am not too sure about tunnel bracing and the connectors underneath may work better.. here is a scan of a roll bar design in my photos that may be of benefit http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/detail?.dir=/392a&.dnm=9bce.jpg
  20. E88 is a later head for 240 and 260 Z s in two versions.. small and large valve.... the large valve E88 is a later emissions head.... Many prefer the earlier and smaller valve non emissions E88.....the small valve E88 has machined ridges in the chambers... you may have a snappy Z motor or the potential for one... Craig's List for Portland had an equipped long block SBC 350 4 bolt main and 7004R for $350.00 a couple weeks back. I am out of Springfield in Fall Creek , Oregon http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/392a
  21. Hat.. I have to make every nickle count and I agree that Ross Corrigan of Modern Motorsports sells quality coilover kits. He sells a washer lower perch and upper hat that I cannot find made anywhere else for the Z struts. I am trying to obtain these from him now. If I had the money, I would buy about everything he offers for it's quality and convenience.....but I cannot afford it...I just included his website in response to a ground clearance question, but for my needs; my time and effort is spent sourcing parts that I can afford.. I do understand a little about spring weights and their manufacturers to make an informed decision.
  22. you may want to install adjustable coilover springs where you can adjust your rode height and ground clearance.. you may want to do some research on this site on coilovers. see this: http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=24_36
  23. Alpha..... every once in awhile the cross lace Daytons come up on eBay and whatever adapters could be re-drilled for the Datsun application.. Adapters come up too.. There is not a strong auction market for the 15 inch cross lace when 600 spoke 26 inchers rule.. If I see any on ebay..I'll post.. the Daytons have stainless spokes but chromed outers that I hear rust if not religiuosly maintained.. The spokes are also sealed with a thick layer of silicone on the inisde of wheel which would cause a problem in later powder coating unless Dayton would later re-line the silicone seal.;. Daytons came with my Stable kit in Datsun 4 hole adapters.. Watch my posts (Yahoo pictures) since I will be putting my Tomahawk Halibrands on the GTO kit for fitment purposes unless I find tires for the Daytons which have never been mounted. My Daytons are 15 X 8 with the rears widely reversed. Had I known better I would have opted for 10 inch rears with 3 1/2 inch offset as I later did for the Tomahawk wheels http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/392a
  24. Mike you need sime fiberglass skills....don't paint over those covers .. make a mold and save the originals or mock up some covers out of foam in the headlight wells and splash a mold from the foam buck.
