The new rotary design places the the exhaust port on the opposite side of the motor. In the 13B and other designs by Mazda up until now (as I understand it) placed the exhaust port right below the intake. With the older apex seals, sometimes the extremely hot exhaust gasses were pushed through into the intake area. The intake charge was heated and detonation occured. This was perpetuated with a turbo added. As far as I know, a new style apex seal has been created to help tremendously with the exhaust in the intake (Which also explains the poor emissions of the these motors). I think Mazda, Apexi, and other companies sell these. Again, I'm not sure, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. These new style seals in conjunction with the new placement of the exhaust port should lengthen the life of these motors. Placing a turbo on one won't be as much of a problem as it has been. Again, I could be wrong, and I'm definitely open to someone who knows a lot more.

Anyone thought about the newer Celica seats. I was extremely impressed when I sat in them. Just a thought.
-
Anyone else? Come on guys, it would be lighter, cooler, and cheaper than a new dash from Nissan. Anyways, just trying to get some interest going.
-
PDK Fabrications was nice enough to start a run of dashes if we find enough interest. As I understand it, we need 10 or more people for either dash to get it made. They can do either a fiberglass one, which will run $600 to $700, or a carbon fiber one that will run around $900. The will also do consoles if enough interest is shown. Again, I think they can do either fiberglass or carbon fiber. Personall, I'd go for a carbon fiber dash and console. Anyone else interested and willing to lay down the cash?

Thanks Davy, I think it was Z's by the Bay. It was a good show. Good assortment of cars and Mr. K with the new Zs. Anyways, is anyone still interested knowing the price and all? Maybe some are more interested in the fiber glass one. I know its going to be cheaper. Any more questions? Please post them.

Guess I got so excited that there was a link that I didn't see the price you quoted. As for the strut bars, I ordered them before Christmas. I saw the sale and the good shipping deal, so I jumped on it. I did first see the bars at the Zfest (I think this was the one). I'm really happy with the build quality, but I have to install them. I'm hoping to get the tranny in and the car off the jack stands in a few days. Just been busy with school and work. It may be easier to just install the bars while its up on the stands, but I want to take a before and after drive. Anywho, thanks for all the info on the CF dash. Do you know what the price would run on the fiber glass one? Or, if the CF one is reflective at all? I'll probably put the carpet on top anyways to protect it from the sun. Thanks again, you have been very helpful and definitely held my interest in doing so. Oh, and if you need any help with that website (I think it could flow a little better) just let me know.

Thanks for the reply on the vent stuff. I know it doesn't have all the mounting stuff, but I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't look like crap if you cut it up for vents and all. I just didn't want to ruin the CF. The fiber glass would be up to the task IMO, but the "wow" factor of the CF is awesome. Do you guys have a tenative price on either dash?
-
What about cutting for vents and all that stuff? How will that affect the longevity and overall well being of the piece? I'm pretty sure that a few of us want to use these things in street cars.

I believe they have something on their website: Click here. There should be a picture, but I don't know how detailed it is. I saw the fiber glass one at the car show, and it was a good looking piece. Any of you guys from PDK got any pics to post? Thanks for the response so far. We still need more people though. Looking through their website a little further I found a few pics. Here's the carbon one

I've got the strut bars. If the build quality is the same for the new dashes, I'm all for them. Hopefully, I will get the tranny up in my 240 this weekend, so I can try out my bars. They feel very solid, and the design in awesome. I'm pretty sure we can get at least ten people to get a carbon or fiber glass dash. Like I said, if we can't find them here, I can put stuff up on zcar.com and zdriver.com. I'm definitely sure we could get a good response there. So, the question is, who wants which dash? I'm in for the carbon as long as it's under $900 or so.
-
I'm hoping this works out. I guess we better just keep bugging them until they make the stuff. I'll wait to see how many people we get here. If it's not enough, I'll post some stuff on zcar.com and zdriver.com.

If I remember the tentative pricing correctly, PDK Fabrication had the fiber glass somewhere between $450 and $650. The carbon fiber one was somewhere between $650 and $850. I think their biggest problem is poor website advertising. Very few people know about them. I was really looking forward to picking up a carbon fiber one. We should get a list going. I bet we could get them to seriously start working at it again. I'd even go for the fiber glass if they couldn't get the carbon one out. I guess the question is who's up to buy one?

Going to a junior college, DVC, in the Bay Area hoping to transfer in a couple years to UC Davis (Currently in my second semester). Don't really have a major yet, only an idea. Think molecular biology, genetics, or bio-chemistry. All the required classes for transfer are the same. As for work, I'm at Starbucks. I pick up roughly 20 hours a week or so. Would get more, but I still play soccer and want to leave Saturday afternoons open for karting. Hoping to go to Jim Russel's karting school when I can finish paying my parents for all the recent Z work (Head reworked:$750, PDK Fabrication strut braces:$450, and audio stuff: $250) Sometimes I wish I was just going to school and not working, but then I think of the poor Z waiting for money. I can't complain though. I know some guy that works 40 to 60 hours a week a pizza place and takes upwards of 20 units (Full time student is 15 units). He's insane.

Which Shifter is best for a T5 and Camaro Bellhousing?
Moridin replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I know he is working on a T5, but that is the tranny the company originally designed their stuff for. I figure that their quality is across the board. I love it. A good smooth and mechanical feel. -

We put the Pro 5.0 on the '03 Cobra. It made a world of difference. I would suggest this part to anyone. Not only does it work well, it's also tranny insurance. Don't waste your money anywhere else. -
I have that optical distributor. I guess the car had an MSD box, before my friend (guy who I bought the car from) fried that and some part in the distrutor. I wonder when he put the new dist. piece back in, he messed up the timing curve. When I get the tranny again, I'll have to see if it stumbles now more than it used to.

I bought the front and rear strut bars from them for my 240. Good quality stuff. I haven't managed to get them in yet, but feel extremely solid. When we talked to PDK on the phone, they said the fiberglass dash was coming along. They weren't to sure on the carbon fiber. Maybe that has changed. The fiber glass one runs in the neighborhood of $400 I think. Good quality stuff though. Lots of good things will come from this company. Keep up the good work.

I haven't heard anything about cable operated ones. That would be pretty cool though. Might be able to do something with some an industrial plumbing slider attached to a cable and/or servo of some type. That's way cool that the Trucks guy has a 240Z. That guy knows what's up with automobiles.
-
PDK Fabrications is working on a fiber glass and carbon fiber replica of the dashes. The orginal look without the weight penalty I don't know how they are coming along with it, but they had a fiber glass one at the Z show at Ohlone college (I apologize for forgetting the name of the show).

Well, if opportunity does arise, I would check out Golden Eagle Mfg. They do the resleeving on the Honda stuff. They may be able to do something for the VQ series. The cool thing about their stuff is it still allows excellent coolent flow. Hopefully someone will help you out. Just send some stuff out to different companies to see if they can give you a hand sponsor wise.

I was at a little dealership and talking to one of the guys. He said that Nismo will not be going turbo, because of the complications involved. He said with the research done by Stillen, Nismo is supposedly going with a supercharger. This is what he told me. How much of it is true, I don't know.

I totally agree. I'm hoping that we get some more car shows goin on. There are not enough tuner shows. The only ones I know of that are any good are HP TV and Trucks. I haven't watched that much of 2NR TV yet. I think an old 240Z with a V8 or some other type of install. That would be awesome. I don't advocate the street racing either. I just don't like the damn hogs runnin around with unbaffled exhaust puttin out more noise than a jet. If you would like to help TNN out with automotive TV (They call it the Powerblock) than visit PowerblockTV and take their survey.

Did anyone watch trucks this last weekend? I believe it was project Copperhead that he was working on and he had an interesting exhaust setup going in. He had a Y pipe (one on each side) hooked up with one part going to the muffler and everything, while the other went to an open side pipe. He had some electronic slider/openers to basically "uncork" the exhaust on demand from the cabin. I apologize in advance for any Harley people here, but I get really tired of all the damn bikes running around here that are insanely loud. I'd love to pull up next to one, uncork mine and give them a taste of their own medacine. I know this is hypocritical, but I hate the damn things. I've thought about following them to their house and blasting something extremely loud. I hear them every once and a while in the middle of the night, and especially when they are coming out of the bar next to my work. A few of them step on it just to be noisy and swerve in and out of traffic. Sorry to go on here, but kinda needed to vent. I also apologize for those that get a bad name from these few. Anywho, I thought the exhause idea was a cool one and wanted to mention it.

I think I'm getting around 10 to 12. Its hard to tell. This is with Triple Mikuni's on the small 2.4L. Of course, I'm having problems with it. By the MPG and massive carbon in the tailpipe, it would seem way too rich. On the other hand, it hesitates big time until I wind it up. Planting my foot in it at low RPM sends it gasping for breath. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

The best way to go IMO, if your son can afford it (I'm also a kid a with a 90' hatch and a Z car that I am both trying to build a little. Well, the hatch isn't really mine, but it was given to us by our cousins. It's going to be the car for my little bro and sis. Brother hasn't gotten around to getting his license, but we are still doing stuff to it) have the B18 resleeved to 2.0L. Build the bottom end a little and them get the turbo set up going. From what I understand, don't mess with the VTEC if you are going turbo. That thing will have torque so he won't be reving the crap out of it all day long to get it to go anywhere. That little civic has been quite a ride though. Never fast enough to get me in any trouble. Now that I've learned a little more control, the Z will be nice. Oh, I just got the PDK strut braces for the Z and my tranny should be done in a few days. Maybe some ZF racing suspension parts on the way when I'm done paying my parents for the head work and strut braces . Sorry to ramble javascript:void(0) Wink , but I'm a little excited. Just my 2 cents
