  1. I agree, you really should have bought a Pepsi. Coke is just too syrupy for me. It's ok though, just remember it next time. Nice turbo by the way.
  2. Hello all, I've been searching around for a quite a while on Hybrid Z and on the rest of the internet, but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I'm trying to convert my 240z over to CV joints using a Q45's shortnose R200. I plan on making these myself as I have access to heavy machinery and skilled welders to attach the plate the companion flange side I'm glad Ross provides this service for those who don't, but I don't need it. What I DO need however, is the length of the axle shafts to go between the Q45's inner CV joints that I will be bolting up. Every seems to say, "I got mine at Moser Engineer" Or, "I got mine at Speedway Engineering", and that's great...but what did you actually ask for? I can find the info on how thick the shaft should be and even how many splines are on it simple enough (I can always just go outside and measure with a caliper if I need to), but the length is something alluded me. I've heard the two shafts are of different lengths as well due to the R200 being offset to one side. If no one knows this info, or has it written down, or doesn't feel like disassembling their CV axle, even the compressed or extended length of the axle all put together would be of benefit. Thanks for the help hopefully!
  3. You could always just try lighting up the rear and checking for 1 tire fire? Sounds way easier than and more fun than taking the diff cover off.
  4. Hey Ron I just picked up a Getrag 217 out of a 2007 Z4 3.0si. It's only got 14k miles on it and it has very similar gearing to the standard ZF 5 speed, except that it has 6th gear with a .85:1. I still need to get the clutch and wheel for it, but considering that I won't be using it for a while because I'm horrendously slow about working on my car, if you wanted to try it out I wouldn't mine...especially considering you'd need to fab up custom mounts and probably a completely different drive shaft for it too Ya know, minor stuff. Anyway, I found mine at a B&R for about 1200. Considering that I'm gonna be running the diff out of a Q45 with its 3.54 gearing, it's definitly needed so I'm not winding the heck out of the engine at all times. Also, if you're just looking for a shorter throw... That may be helpful. I could go find ya one if you'd make me some engine mounts I'd throw in a beer too!
  5. So you can't attach your lower diff mount to act as a spacer?
  6. You're going to be running an RB25 yes? RB25 =/= V8 You'll be fine. But if you have the money and feel like never really having to worry about the rearend again, TTT's package will definitly be a good place to go unless you wanna just run a solid axle.
  7. You could also just make/have made an adaptor plate for your outer cv joints to your companion flanges. There are a few designs out there floating around. Wolf creek racing makes an adaptor for Porsche CV joints but you could use the same idea. A guy made some funky lookin steel ones that kinda look like a squashed spool with some holes drilled into it that you can find online if you google "240z companion flange CV adaptor" Or even just welding a plate that surrounds the companion flange and drilling the correct holes into it. If you notice, Ross offers that as well as his billet ones. If you're not gonna be running crazy insane torque with big ol tires I'd consider it.
  8. Thanks for the links, but I couldn't really find any dimensions on the axle widths. To me it really seems like as long as you have a decently gradual neck down to the smaller diameter end, it shouldn't put too much of a stress concentration on the axle vs. just narrowing it straight into the bar on a lathe. I mean, if anyone has an STI or Q45, or is just running either of those cars diffs, if you could get under your cars with a pair of calipers it would help me out a lot.
  9. Well, if anyone knows what the width of a stock Infiniti Q45 and Subaru STI, or even regular WRX axle is, I think that would answer my question. If they are the same, or even similar, imagine how awesome that would be!
  10. I had a question, and this might be mindless nonsense that I would like to have happen, even though it's impossible. Anyway, I get that the main problem with the Subaru R180 is adapting it to fit our companion flanges and wheel ends because of the odd outside CV that Subaru's come with. Well, as to run this setup custom axles have to be made anyway, would it be possible to attach an inner Q45 CV joint to the outside end of the axle and then use the methods we've been using for years to attach those to our companion flanges? It seems like if the spline count is different it wouldn't matter because you'd just have whatever shop make the ends have different spline counts when cutting them. However is the width of the axle going to put the stops on this crazy idea, anyone have any idea?
  11. Yes but back to his original question for people a bit more budget restricted. Can those gears be swapped into the 3.7 R200lsd?
  12. I was running around gear ratio's and kept noticing that almost all the LSD R200's all have ratio's that are kinda high. 3.545 was the lowest I had found out of an Infiniti. However, finally thinking, why not just look in newer Z cars, I found the 350z automatic has a diff with a 3.357 ratio and is a R200 VLSD like that of the Infiniti. So that leads me to my question: With the proper installation brackets to install a short nose R200 into a 240z, is there any reason as to why this differential will not work? Also, has anyone done this swap before?
  13. Last June I caught the Z bug and had to get one. A week later I was 500 dollars in the hole but plus one 1973 Datsun 240z. The engine was currently sitting in front of the car when I bought it, and the exhaust actually ripped off the car loading it onto the trailor, so I wasn't too keen on putting it back into the car. I wanted something a bit more modern. I've always had a love affair with older cars due to their simplicity and the fact that "lightweight" 40 years ago didn't mean "under 3500 lbs". However, I'm a younger guy and have always been facinated with modern engines. So this is why I started the project I did... ...that and because Ron started one at nearly the same time only about 40 minutes away letting me know that it COULD be done I'm not anywhere even close to done as of right now, but I don't exactly have a ton of pictures to show, but I do have something else. I've been keeping track of what I've been doing on youtube, taking a video every once in a while to show what's going on. You can find them all by searching for "Thomas' 240z Project" or you can just click on this link and then find all the rest of them Episode 1:
  14. Hey Ron, did you do an OBD-1 swap? You've got the M50 intake, just wondering if you have the M50 injectors and fuel rail and ECU? Also, isn't there an HFM that's suppose to go inbetween the filter and the throttle body?
  15. WOO HOO!!! 200 dollar ecu option! And my project is BACK IN BUDGET!
  16. Thanks Ron, I like both of those options. Also, the price is reasonable enough for either option. The GPS. Route looks to be the way to go though due to the ease of installation. I'm almost done tearing everytthing off of my car, so as soon as that's done, and the car comes back from the blasters, I'll be working on finageling with my new pile of German cast iron I just picked up. Oh, question about transmission: The stock zf 5-speed has a final drive of 1, with a typical R200 of 3.7 I'd be running over 3000 rpms just doing 60. I'm going to probably go with the lower 3.54, but I keep thinking that picking up the 6-speed out of a wrecked E46 330I or M3 might be a good idea. What are you planning on running?
  17. Hey Ron I have a question...well, I have about 100 questions but this is my current #1 question. How are you hooking a speedometer up to your car? I've heard multiple conflicting "facts" on where the vehicle speed sensor is from the transmission, to the diff, to the wheel so I don't even have a good idea on where that is. Is it just a sensor that sends a signal or does the zf trans use a cable and gear system that acturally turns the speedo. Or do I just really have idea how the f the speedo works?
  18. Hey Ron, so it's no go on the S54 I was hoping for, unless you feel like spotting me an extra 5 grand as there is a nice one for sale in Portland right now But...I did kinda track down an S52 from a guy who is, get this, doing an LS1 swap in his 97 M3 sedan...and it's NOT Braap...weird I know. Gonna check out the engine tonight (still in his car), but I may some serious motivation to work faster on my 240 once I get a motor.
