  1. Water takes up oxygen's space a little more when it is humid. This means you get less oxygen in the cylinders per given amount of work to pump air in and out. Remember, an engine is just an air pump... Wouldn't the effect be kinda like having a slightly clogged air filter? Also, I'm assuming modern fuel injected engines suffer less because they can adjust the mixture correctly, instead of a carburetor just seeing volume of air and not correcting for the water's presence. Definitely more resistance moving the tires through water. Pat
  2. He painted the louvres: ew He painted the wipers: ew He painted the friggin' quarter panel z emblems: EWWWW (cries) Otherwise, I'd drive it. It would just need some different wheels. Pat
  3. I think you mean to add crank throws and counterweights to the list. Ok, on the compression/power stroke the piston will be pushing against the connecting rod just before and after the moment it stops. On the exhaust stroke the piston will be pushing on the connecting rod before then pulling on it after the stop. So, the piston is stopped by compression/ignition once and yanked back the other way by the connecting rod once. This causes the rod to be compressed and tensed alternately, producing some heat from internal friction. How much, I don't know. The crank also will wiggle a little bit because of the rods' force on it, causing some more internal friction. The bearings are designed to cushion and absorb some of this "vibration" inside the engine. Was that any help? Pat
  4. "you will be stuck at the starting line, spinning one tire, while your (fwd?) opponent is at the finish line" Any of us members with V8 Datsuns can agree that this is the truth, we get blown away at the line. Ummmmmnnn, HAAAAAA HAAAAA HA. Cough cough cough. Right... Even with crappy street radials I own most every fwd I have ever seen/raced off the line. I love these guys. They make beating them fun instead of just a chore. Pat
  5. The Navy board has selected me to train for a pilot position. Supposedly I'm the first pilot app. from NRD Chicago to be accepted to train in the last two years. I have done the physical exam and Physical Readiness Testing (just did that today). Man, I need to do more pushups and situps or come OCS I will be screwed... My cardio/running is fine, though, as I'm a pretty good and active runner, but I just passed the pushups, with 50 in 2 minutes :} and situps, with 61 in 2 minutes ;} Being young sucks...LOL Also, I could use to lose some weight at 6'1.5" and 206 lbs. While I'm not fat by any stretch, I do weigh in heavy. Now I still have to do the security clearance and wait until they want me to start, which may be in August (recruiter's guess) or earlier. They start OCS classes about every two weeks, so the possibility of an earlier start exists. Patsky
  6. Bwahaha! I saw that when it was broadcast like 5 years ago and it is even funnier now! Pat
  7. Who owns THAT monster? Is it Darius's new modification?
  8. OMG, Dan, your GIF is hilarious!
  9. Same as Mike KZ... just a little hole in the gas cap... Probably wasteful, but whatever. Pat
  10. Yeah, the training is what really got me, too, except we were NOT paid for it and got NO free lunches. BEEEE ESSSS. Also, I have to call them out on it when they say their reps do no cold calls. Each call after you have done your family and friends is definitely a COLD call because you don't know the person you are talking to at all. You are a combination of door-to-door salesman and telemarketer, added to the fact that you have to call in all the time to report progress and go to unpaid meetings, etc. I don't know how anyone does it. Pat
  11. Yes, during college. Well, let's just say that I was not pleased with the company. They brainwash you during the week-long "training" into being their little zombie knife sellers. Also, they make you buy your demo set to the tune of $150ish. That, and the fact that they virtually force you to go to meetings three times a week, call in every day with tabs on sales, and don't pay you much at all makes for a bad experience for some. However, IF you know a LOT of people who have money to blow, it MAY be worth your time. After I quit there I got a regular hourly pay job and was much, much happier! Pat PS, sorry for the short description, I'm in a hurry...
  12. Thanks for the clarification , Pop. I fully realize that the cream fly transports. Why do you hate America? LOL. Or am I? ANY PILOT SPOT IS A TOP-TIER POSITION IN ANY FORCE. There, I said it. Also, diesel mechanic and cook are ENLISTED positions, so remember that one. My GF's older broter is a Naval aviator (F14's are on their last tour right now) and has given me a lot of advice and support. Also, he has said to definitely get it in writing that I will be going for a pilot spot. /Sorry, I just had a long day at work. Pat
  13. Also, I should say that I'm not ONLY looking to join for the pointy go-fast planes. I would also like to fly the S3 Viking, Sea Hawk, or whatever. Pat
  14. Well, I do have one more extra skill. I have my commercial pilot's license, instructor certificate, etc that supposedly make me competitive as heck. Yes, though, the one thing is my contacts. PoP, Bitter? Do you have any personal experiences that you wish to share? I actually have a friend that did engineering and AFROTC. Now he is a button (as in, the big RED button) pusher in ND and doing well, going to move to Cali soon to train button pushers. Pat
  15. Got my grades today, too.... This is the email I received from a recruiter about my Air Force Officer's Qualifying Test, or AFOQT, scores. Patrick, Here are your AFOQT scores. Pilot 99, Nav 94, Acad. Aptitude 97, Verbal 95, QT 94. I showed the old OTS recruiter and he said you should be a shoe in. I know they are some of the highest scores I've seen including engineers. Here is the workbook and the applicant profile. Just complete them and e-mail them back. Pretty good, I think! By the way, I also did the Navy's officer test and am applying for a pilot spot with them, as well. I know that they are looking for pilots. Also, this was all spurred by the recent addition of a waiver for soft contact lenses as long as you have 20/40 without them in and correctable to 20/20. Which I am... I'm excited. I've been thinking about doing this for a while and thought I would share the results with you guys since I feel you have shared so much with me and the rest of the world. Tell me what you think. Pat
  16. Yeah, I had recently installed the b&m shifter on the 350/th350, but did NOT hook up the neutral safety switch. Then I proceeded to start the car in first gear (didn't even check it) and ram it into the back of the parts car that was sitting just in front of it in the drive. Needless to say, a bumperless 280 will loose every time to a chevy caprice in a head-on collision. Bent my hood and grill all to hell... I can get pictures if you want to see them Just damn glad that the parts 280 had a decent hood on it! (Otherwise I would have to buy one on eBay for $500 LOL) I told my parents that somebody had hit my car in a parking lot! The saddest part was that the motor didn't even fire because the two cars started only about five feet apart, making the starter motor and my hand the only real culprits. I just sat there and let it happen . Pat
  17. Ok, I feel like a dumb@$$ because I didn't try it earlier, but the mode door actuator was the problem. I just crawled under the dash while changing the heater/defroster controls and noticed the actuator diaphragm not being sucked in, so no defrost or warm heat. All it needed was a nudge the botom of the diaphragm to unstick it and now the system works like a charm. Pat
  18. That should work fine to get it started for the first time. Then just set the idle speed and needles like you would do with any other carb, using a vacuum gauge to find the highest vacuum at idle. You'll be set, it's easy. Pat
  19. LOL! That gets me every time it's posted on this board. My favorite will always be the drill press because it's all so true. You get extra points if you combine tool functins, e.g. using the drill with flat stock to shoot your damnit tool across the garage. Pat
  20. Hey, thanks. I'll check that then and let ya know if that was the problem. Pat
  21. Hi guys, I have a 77 and this winter my heater/defroster has not been working. I have already made sure all of the vacuum lines are in good shape, but only cold air comes out of the "panel vent" holes. This happens in vent, a/c, heat, defrost, etc. (every) position. Also, the heater control valve appears to be working because once up to speed I can feel some warm air coming out of the heat and defrost vents (depending on which is selected), but none while stationary. What should I be looking at to fix this? It seems like a door is not being switched, but which one? All I have is a Haynes manual and it's next to useless for this matter as its more geared toward 240's. Patsky
  22. OHHHH, It was funnier when I thought it was actually some ricer being serious. I knew that looked familiar. The original "Taxi" was definitely the best and the remakes/sequels sucked eggs. Pat
  23. Nah, It's so you can get your hands in there to loosen the nuts, right?
