  1. Brian, you plan on taking a bull elk with a .50 BMG??? now that would prolly be a waste of meat! Shooting through concrete walls? OK, ventilating engine blocks? sure! but taking a game animal that you plan on eating??? A hunting buddy shoots a .375 H&H, and it's too much gun IMO., I have taken a couple of big bulls and several smaller, and a single cow, all with a .300 win mag, out to about 400 yards. I kind of wonder what kind of grief you'd get from a DOW officer for toting around a .50 BMG... I don't know as it's illegal, all the Colorado (where I grew up and still hunt Elk) DOW says is you must use a centerfire rifle in a .243 or larger bore, I'd guess that would certainly qualify for "larger" I'd bet that after a hit from a round like that, the typical Elk would already be quartered! Maybe save you a step there...
  2. Ferrariferg, if it's a Marlin lever action model 336 chambered in .35 REM, it does have quite a bit of push, great fun to shoot and mine is very accurate out to 100 yards, past that and the bullet drops badly, I've shot deer, wild hogs, and coyotes with mine when nothing else was handy, great little gun. I just picked up a Browning Model 65 lever gun, chambered in .218 BEE, and WOW, it's a little lazer gun! I don't know for sure how fast that round is, but it's up there for sure. Rounds are not cheap though...
  3. Nope, talk to Eric or Steve at http://www.automotivemachine.com/ tell 'em Chris with the turbo 240Z sent ya, they know me. And my credit card number LOL
  4. I'll mark that on the calender, I dig brit stuff, heck I even drove a Triumph Spitfire once! Josh, next time you need some ceramic coating done, check with Automotive Machine and Supply in Ft. Worth, they did all the coatings on my engine, very nice stuff with quick turn around, they farm it out to Jet Hot I believe, but they do a lot of business with them, so they get pretty quick turn around.
  5. Lipo batteries and brushless motors are no joke! I used to race way before that technology was around, still have a ton of Associated Electrics RC-10 stuff, 2 or 3 complete cars and trucks and loads and loads of spares, was WAY into it about 15 years ago, I haven't touched any of that stuff other than to bash around the yard in the last 10 years at least. I also had an HPI nitro RS-4 several years ago. this kit has me thinking nasty thoughts. also, jc052685, I've seen your R/C vids on YT, very cool stuff... Big-Phil and I shot a video of one of my buggies racing him on his CRF-50 on the street in front of my house, although I don't think he ever posted it anywhere... it was a dead heat with old NiCads and a Reedy 8 turn, but his 50 is actually a modified 88cc death machine, I've managed to come off of it more than once.
  6. Yep, got one, nope, it doesn't work. At least not very well, it sure does make all the blood fill up your noggin though...
  7. Hey, my 10 year old daughter told me that knock knock joke! Apparently 4th graders think poop jokes are the pinnacle of comedy, sorry to disappoint...
  8. easy, just put a stock L-28 back in the car, if you feel it would be too much power for him, adjust the throttle linkage so the thing never sees full throttle, you could also put an aftermarket ignition box with a rev limiter on it and set it to something like 4K, a friend did this with his '78 turbo car when his son would drive it, worked like a charm. A KA swap would be going through a lot of work just to change it back later IMO, plus they are not a whole lot less powerful than a stock L-28.
  9. Cool car Drax, and a great excuse to spout off one of my favorite car jokes! What's the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? a porcupine has its pricks on the outside!!! a good friend of mine has an '07 M-5, what a car...
  10. Thanks Gabe, trans and turbo are no big deal, I knew running another B box was a mistake, but I have several (now mostly broken) and I had for sure gotten loads of grins out of the turbo, and it still boosts just fine, and the car runs as it always has, but I'll have to have the seal replaced, probably just get it completely rebuilt. Sparky, who is a member here, auto crossed my car at the 2006 ZCON here in Ft Worth, I had not signed up for it, and he didn't have a running Z, so I let him run mine, he did super, and I got a sweet poster made of the professional photos taken that day. I'm sure you'll have a blast!
  11. I first visited this site sometime in 1999, so if I keep on like I have been, I may break 100 posts by 2020 or so. Man, I wish we had gotten the Phil and Tommy 2 up wheelie on video, that was classic.
  12. Yep, work. Moving Americas rail traffic at maximum authorized speed! Getting paid to surf HybridZ, apparently they have redone the servers here at the office, so I can now get onto the site for the first time in years, Yeah!
  13. Oil smoke! I lost the turbo oil seal on the second ride and drive, I've been running the same turbo for about 5 years so I'm not really shocked, it seemed to suck just enough oil at high vacuum/rpm to spew out the vapor trail in the video. Then the transmission blew sky high, it sounds like a coffee can full of marbles being shaken around under the car, it locked up in 4th at around 125 MPH or so, putting me WAY off the end of the longest straight, I should have maybe brought a change of drawers! all in all, not a great day for the home team. Still loads of fun though. My car would be brutally fast on the road course if it didn't have quite such a hack for a driver, although I didn't spin at all this year, so I'm improving. The best part of the day was Brian in his N/A 280zx, his car made 132whp at our Dyno day last year, has a relatively mild suspension set up, and the same Falken Azenis tires I'm running (rears now flat spotted, ugh!) and he was probably running the lowest lap times of anyone there, the guy can REALLY drive, he holds an SCCA license, and it sure shows. Anyone who has the opportunity to run a track day really should consider it, we had everything from stock and built up 350Z's, S-30s, S-130s (Club president David was looking strong in his S-130 turbo, until the brakes went away) a couple Z-31's and a lone Z32TT, heck even a stone stock Honda civic and a couple Corvettes later in the day. I'll be back for sure, but I am absolutely done with the early transmissions, I had completely gone through this trans, all new bearings and syncros, seals and shift rod pins, and it lasted about 30 minutes on track, I'm curious to get it apart and see what failed, I'm guessing either the front countershaft bearing went, or 4th gear is missing a bunch of teeth and they're rattling around in the bottom of the case. Good Times.
  14. Yep, that would get it done, I personally like Nitrous Oxide Systems kits, mainly because that's all I have experience with, but I'm sure other name brand kits are probably just as good. I threw out the $700 figure to include nice to have, but maybe not must have features, like throttle micro switches, fuel pressure safety switch, a purge kit, ETC. a sneaky pete system is a total waste for this application, much too small, get a good adjustable single fogger system and make sure there is a shop with a fill station somewhere close to you...
  15. 200hp out of an otherwise stock L28E? easy, a 75 horse shot of nitrous oxide, a nice kit could be put together for less than $700 or so, including a supplementary fuel pump and throttle switches etc. I plan to run a small shot on my next L engine...
  16. Happy Birthday Bro. I will be sure to roost some mud and rocks in your face this weekend, as your BD gift.
  17. Wow, that exhaust is not good, after seeing the resonator in that muffler all dislodged and pinched down like that, I'm a bit surprised it made the power it did! that is one serious cork in the air flow! a new 3" exhaust will do wonders! Getting a regular single blade T/B intake in the U.S. is not a problem, as well as a 60mm T/B. Myself or someone else here could pick you one up, but I'd imagine shipping would be out of sight. Building up an intake from scratch with larger runners and plenum would be best, but surely a USDM intake would be better than what you're running now, just a thought. edit: get at least a screamer pipe on that wastegate discharge before you give yourself brain damage, I'm pretty sure that's what's wrong with me, DATSUN FUMES!!!
  18. a 2.5" crush bent exhaust? that right there is killing any chance of making decent top end power, you'll pick up a bunch of top end HP going to a 3" mandrel bent set up with a straight through drag type muffler, I like dynomax, cheap and seems to work fine. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see your combo pick up 40-50 WHP up top with a decent exhaust. Your timing map is also very conservative after 105kpa, by several degrees, have you run an EGT on the engine? I bet they're high with that much retard... I'd do the exhaust first, 2.5" is way small for a stroker turbo, and the crush bends are no good for sure. Try to bump up the timing after 105kpa a few degrees at a time while on the dyno, I bet you'll be closer to 20-24* under max boost as long as your AFRs and EGT are in line. Others have said the intake manifold and TB, and also the pretty severe bends in the I/C system, which are for sure leaving some power on the table also. just for bench racer sake, I built a friend a very mild turbo set up a few years ago, totally stock junkyard L28ET, Haltech E6S, 440CC injectors, a modified starion I/C, 60mm T/B, 2.5 mandrel downpipe into a 3" mandrel exhaust, dyno max muff, and a 57 trim T3-T4 turbo with a .63 turbine, and made 280ish WHP and 290WTQ at 17 psi, your combo should make much much more power than that, you just need to remove the bottlenecks to airflow, the biggest I can see is the exhaust for sure...
  19. I work close to there, 35 and western center. what exactly are you wanting to do with your motor? I've built several, N/A and turbo...
  20. Just a quick reply for those that ask why the GT-35R as apposed to the HY-35, I helped Phil select this turbo for his new "built" motor, and although it's been a while since I researched it, look at the compressor maps for both... the GT-35R pumps something like 12 -14 pounds per minute more than the HY-35 at the same pressure ratio, that means more power at lower boost, as well as a lot less heat. Phil decided he wanted the .63 hotside to maintain a very quick spool. I personally would have gone with a little "looser" turbine to make a little more power up top, but th .63 should make excellent midrange power, and hopefully not sacrifice too much in the higher RPM range. The ball bearing center section should also help with spool, and for sure be a lot more forgiving of the abuse Phil will dish out I imagine Phils new motor will make very good power, as well as be very responsive, just what every street Z needs!
  21. Yep, metal = strong, Tommy KNOWS!!! and he can demostrate!
  22. IMO there's no way he's making enough power with a 57 trim hybrid to run anywhere close to a 10 (or 11) second 1/4 mile. A very good friend of mine has a 57 trim, .63 stage 3 turbine 3/4 hybrid and makes 275whp at 14 psi, I tuned his Accell DFI system and the car is quick, and a blast on the street, but 10 second quick? not even close. My friends car makes that power on a pretty conservative tune, and there's more power in his combo, but not more than another 60 - 75 whp or so, at least not with a stock engine on pump gas... although he's collecting the parts to build a new motor, including a ported head with the same cam I'm running, now that should spool that "little" 57 trim really well. I just read the ad again and it says it's tuned now... he also didn't mention it in the ad, but there's no way he ran very quick in the 1/4 with the 14x6" all season looking tires that are on the car now~! what do I know, maybe he's got another set of wheels with some big slicks on, and a couple hundred horsepower worth of nitrous hidden somewhere.
