  1. Have HICAS on that turbo? Thoughts?
  2. Oh ya, what transmission did you use? The one that came with the RB or the 300ZX unit - can you do that?
  3. Is that a RB26? Intake and throttle bodies look different, not that I'm all that knowledgeful on the RB series. How much clearance will there be between the radiator and alternator / etc. ? Looks pretty good, the stock engine really fills out those Z32 engine bays.
  4. Very nice!! I have a M24/47 Yugo Mauser, a dream to fire, but I can't hit a barn. Glasses and I don't do well at the range. Then again it wouldn't matter with my Mosin Nagant M38 carbine, I just try and hold on when that goes off Match grade ammo cheaper in 7.62 than in 7.92? I got a bunch of surplus, not very spendy, just have to clean thoroughly after each use though.
  5. ENGINE Q'S head gasket on the 7MGTE aside, what issues are there? fuel consumption: how do they compare? I climb up ~3,000 ft fairly quickly, much difference in mid-range torque to push the weight up the climb? The VG30ET seems to be regarded as a very reliable motor stock with stock internals going up to 450+hp. How about the 7MGTE? Might not use all the opportunity right away, but it is nice to have. CHASIS Q'S Weight difference - the Supra is heavier but by how much? Handling - with new shocks, lowering springs, some good tires, how do they compare? Styling isn't to big of an issue with me, though the not-fully-closed-while-closed headlights on the Z31 aren't my favorite. Any answers will be appreciated! Oh yes, I've been doing digging for an affordable, NOT a 240SX, RWD coupe, S12 200SX, Mitsu Starion, seem a bit too small. S12 needs a swap for some performance, and the Starion's TBI injection didn't get me going. What might I have missed?
  6. That is alot better mileage than what I've heard the 300ZX-T gets. I heard mid- to low-twenties. Did some reading over on http://www.supramania.com/, a MKIII site, and it seems that there are more reliability issues with the 7MGTE. Heat, headgasket -what a pain to have to get a metal headgasket and the machining for it. Issue closed in my mind
  7. I live up several thousand feet, ~3,000, and it is a fairly steep and steady climb. From what I've gathered the 7GMTE and the VG30ET have similiar mid-range torque, but how about fuel consumption? Off of boost, will one suck more gas down in an appreciable ammount?
  8. I'll probably be burned to crisp for this, but how do the two compare? There aren't many good condition 300ZX turbos around here, the good ones command prices equal to or a bit above that of nicely maintained, ie new headgaskets, belts, etc, MKIII Supras. The 7MGTE likes to blow its stock head gasket, besides that the two seem very similiar.
  9. Thanks all for the info, went over to club-s12.org and read up. Seems to be a good deal more work getting moderate levels of power out of the CA18 as opposed to the VG30ET. Lighter and more mpg's cruising though necessitates more research into the rebuild costs of both engines and subsequent power levels. Living several thousand feet up and 35 miles out from life makes that an issue worth fiddling for.
  10. That is the problem, almost all the data out there is for the CA18 "DET", JDM only, while the one I'm interested is the "ET". Which has weaker rods, but to what limit can they be pushed? A metal-ish head gasket to keep things from bursting and a good tune, but what are the limits of the motor? So, anyone have much experiance with the SOHC CA18ET, and not the DOHC CA18DET? Things stay cheaper if parts are here stateside in junkyards
  11. I've done some searching and haven't really found much quality and first hand info on this engine. How much can the stock block and head take safely? From what I have found, a T25 from a SR20 gets a good bit more boost than stock and just takes rotating the turbo assembly to fit, but what is the limit with that turbo vs stock?. With an intercooler and a T3, what would be possible? What are the limits on the stock injectors and ECU? Seems like the engine is reliable enough - what goes when something does go wrong? Thanks!
  12. How fast was he going on those passes? And I'm assuming that the engine isn't on a massive reduction gear, but blowing thrust out instead of cranking for rwhp?
  13. If anyone get get a close to typical build cost for such a motor setup, that would be great - I haven't heard almost anything on such high power 2.3's. Not really around that stuff
  14. What is the advantage to going to a carb? The EFI can be tuned, can't it?
  15. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I read that article the dyno was at the crank, so 2/3's for rwhp. I've also read that the high-rise intake on the truck motors flows rather well, what is keeping anyone from using the stock EFI setup? Just swap on a LS1/6 intake for clearance on zcars and you can save on stand alone ignition and carbs.
  16. How much did that turbo run? over on turbonetics website turbos cost _alot_ . . .
  17. I noticed that you fitted S14 suspension - how hard is that? What advantages are there? I imagine that brakes are much easier to fit, but besides that? Wouldn't a set of stiffer springs fix the 'squat' issue that the 280ZX's are cursed with?
  18. I've searched and turned up almost nothing so . . I know the frame rails on 280Z's are reinforced farther back than on the 240Z, but that is just about all I know on the chasis strenght of the various Z's up to '89. The wheel base on the S130 and Z31 is the same, but the engine bay is fairly different, as is the weight - always a few hundred more pounds. The trailing arm rear suspensino also appears very similiar. How much difference in strength is there with each new generation? Thanks!
  19. What years of the RB25 have NVCS? All RB25s, or just the RB25DET?
  20. Bolt in as . . . stock mounts, stock driveshaft? Sounds very interesting!
  21. Pete84

    Z31 mpg

What is the rear diff ratio on turbo and non-turbo cars? 3.73s or higher?
  22. Pete84

    Z31 mpg

With the boost lowered when not needed with a boost controller, would oversized injectors still bring down mileage?
  23. Pete84

    Z31 mpg

I've used the search function and it hasn't turned up much at all. . . so What sort of highway mileage do Z31's get? There are a good many for sale not to far away, the SF bay area - 3-4 hours away, and the prospect of getting a 5spd NA 2+2 and ending up with a turbo'ed engine seems quite reasonable after looking at a number of the how to's. With a boost controller, intake, exhaust, and possibly a FMIC how would a 9:1 turbo engine do on the highway? almost all my driving is there, and well, I do enough that it needs to be pretty good.
