I Am So Screwed. Help 4, 3, 2, 1
Okimoto replied to MIBPreacher's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Do you get spark whilst cranking the car? i.e., holding the high tension end towards ground and looking for a spark? I know on the L block, the temp sensor is near the distro wire and knocking one out will tug the other out. is there gas on the plugs? If not, are the injectors firing? (noid light maybe?) -
I didn't like the Painless kit. I installed one in BANG's Z car. It's much better to grab about 10 different color spools of wire, a pegboard, and a weekend to do it yourself. I did a basic install in my car that used 6 fuses and had everything needed to be legal for the street, except the horn. I'm in the process of tearing it out because the car is going to have to get some major work done and its easier to do it over again. Also it helps that i enjoy wiring up the z.

Well, I am getting rid of one of the saturn parts cars... so now I have a place to move the RV to and can finally pull the Z car out of the garage! I might even be able to fix the termite damage on the garage. Just a thought: Have any of you guys had any luck finding commercial property just to work on your car on? I mean, like short term rental of a year or so where you park your car, bring some tools and set up shop?
-
Wow, you have an empty space to work on a car at! I think you should put the compressor outside in an enclosure, if possible. Working next to my compressor gives me a ringing ear. I'm kinda lucky the Z car is so small... it's alot smaller than a standard one car garage... and even then I have trouble finding the space to work on it with, haha. and yes, my grandma has found some creative storage solutions in using the engine compartment as a place for neon beer signs and boxes.

I think you need to mow your lawn, it looks kinda long. Is that marathon II? I have an 05xB. I'm trying to save the car money to spend on the Z since the scion is kinda a economy car. I get 29mpg in mine though. It's funny to see all the cars slow down on the hill whereas my car is already in its peak power range and has no problem making it up at 80mph. I gotta admit, I kinda want the stock spoiler though. noooo must resist temptation! The Z needs my money!

How do you guys do it? I can't work on my Z car until I clean my garage up, but I have nowhere to put anything! I've tried the search function and the only thing I found was grumpyvette's thread on how he organized his twin 22 drawer toolboxes. right now there is crap in front of the toolboxes, there's crap in the engine compartment of the Z, and there's crap just about everywhere. there's a shed in the back thats full of crap too. The big problem is that I have a grandma who's a damn packrat who wont let me throw away a stinky sleeping bag, or a baby bouncer, etc... when I throw them in the trash can, they wind up back in that damn garage. I've resorted to taking a camper shell and building a shelter to hold all the z car parts... but my grandma is now using that area to hold cardboard and pillows, etc... I would sell the stuff but I don't have the time for that. I don't live there and get about 8 hours a week into that garage, and every time I go there it gets worse. It has to stop. I'm thinking about renting a dumpster when my grandma goes to bingo and dumping everything in there... but if she sees that dumpster, she will remove everything in it... so I would have to do it in about 6 hours or less. Any suggestions / ideas on how to organize the mess? I'd like to try and co-exist with it, and was wondering on organization systems that you guys use to co-exist with your packrat wives, etc...

What fun, decent performance cars would you consider for $13-14k?
Okimoto replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
For 14 grand, you can buy a brand new scion, no? I have a scion xB, and while some may call it a wussy car with no horsepower and the aerodynamics of a borg mothership, I find it to be a great car to drive. It has plenty of power for me, (get the 5 speed) and can be reliable with 150 horsepower if you opt for the supercharger. The power? 100 horses, but once you figure out how to drive it and squeeze every last bit of power from that 1.5, you'll be in great shape. I don't have passing problems if I downshift. The mileage? I get a solid 30 with my lead foot. 29.5 with a/c. Maintenance? little to none. It's really nice to have traction control and ABS. I activate the ABS daily on my way to work over a gentle S on the freeway offramp so I know it works. 32k and still on the original brakepads too. -
40 hours flat. I don't work more than that unless someone has my balls in the salad shooter, and in the last year that's only happened 3 times for a 44 hour maximum work week. My previous job I was working 50-60 a week, every week and didn't like it at all. I work in architecture. Currently doing multi-family and commercial.

Car Idles - but won't rev up
Okimoto replied to trwebb26's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
I had that same problem with the isuzu, turns out it was a fuel issue where the pump was pretending to provide the full pressure when the truck was idle, but moving caused the same problems. Replaced the FPR and I got 35 at idle, but 10 after the car warmed up. Finally replaced the fuel pump after leaving a pressure gauge connected at the tank for several runs. -
The easiest solution is to get this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8065623039 attach it to your scion and get a harbor freight dinghy, haha. I was going to do that when I was thinking about selling the truck. I have an 05 camo green 5sp as well. It's a great daily driver compared to my isuzu spacecab. the ride could be a bit nicer though... its sorta harsh with the factory kyb's. What's your budget on the truck? 3000, 4000, 5000, 35000? Budget constraints can make a difference. I've heard that the older diesel surburbans make about 20-25mpg and come in the 3/4 ton variety for pretty cheap. (I've seen them for a few grand with claims of 30mpg?) Maybe someone can give input on the 6.2l.

my Z is trapped in a garage 30 miles away, but you should have 12 volts going to it. If you jump the flasher connector... and turn the turn signal indicator, the indicator bulbs for that direction should light up continuously. [another edit] If you jump the flasher module, and turn the turn signal, and the signal light lights up continuously, then replace the flasher module. Also if they dont, you might be reading the 12v from the emergency flasher module, maybe? not sure, I didn't wire emergency flashers into my harness because I'm a rebel without a clue. can I try suggesting something? (this applies to my 1/70, maybe not to your 76 with EFI (formerly), but chassis wiring should be similar.) When you're under the dash, you should see two aluminum cans, 1 inch in diameter, between 1 and 2 inches high. one might be larger than the other, doesn't matter which, they both do the same thing. Doesn't matter if one plugs in a white base, and the other in a black base, as long as they're both two blade flashers. Since you said your hazard lights work, switch the two aluminum cans, then try the turn indicators. If the turn indicators work, it's the flasher module. If it doesnt work, try turning the hazards on. If the hazards turn on, the flasher module is now known good and you can go to your turn signal switch for troubleshooting. when I got my Z, a rat chewed out all the wiring. I rewired from scratch so that I could get the car street legal. Now that the engine's out, I'm going to rewire it again because I like chassis wiring. I know that has nothing to do with this, but check for rats, maybe? (edit) if you don't have 12 volts going to it, check the wiring to the flasher. You can bench test the flasher by using a light bulb and a battery. Hook them up in series and then see if it flashes. It might be alot easier just to get a new electronic flasher, with the extra loud clicking noise they sell at csk, then plug it in.

I'm new to differentials but was wondering: Can you gut the VLSD and place it in the standard r200 casing? I see the VLSD's for cheap sometimes, compared to r200 LSD's.

You kept the AC compressor! Does that mean not only will this car go fast, but will do it in comfort? My buddy BANG had that maxima and dreamed of a 350 swap... but smog would have been difficult. Does the rear end squat when you put it in gear? I like this hybrid.

There are 3 in my driveway. My brother has one also. 97 SL2 Parts Car 120k 96 SL2 5 speed 120k 95 SL2 Auto 100k Brother owns the 93 5 speed SL2 with 250k on it. The 93 is the fastest, it had factory headers and was just faster than the other ones for some reason. The one thing these cars have in common: They all seem to burn oil. I had a 91 saturn that didnt burn oil, but it had electrical problems. the 91 was just as fast as the 93. I blew the engine in the 96 after an injector failed and caused a lean burn condition in the aluminum engine. I bought the 97 and swapped the engine from that to the 96. By the way, I hate saturns. the only reason my family has them was because my dad bought them. For the price, I guess they're ok and they're easier to work on than a honda of the same yr, but I still dont like em. I'd rather drive a bentley or a porsche than a saturn. Will trade the 97 and 96 for someone to complete the bodywork, cheap paint job, frame repair, and rust repair on the z. haha. [edit] If you buy a saturn, feel free to take my parts car.

I was under the impression that you needed to use AC with aluminum due to the nature of the aluminum having embedded impurities which is assisted in floating up by the alternating current?

In the later 280's there's a box in the back above the passenger side strut that contains a very small lady who is hell bent in notifying you whenever something is wrong with the car. I have found several threads about this on zcar and I'm going to try and get some time in the junkyard tomorrow in an attempt to get one for my 240z, which does not have a lady. if you go to the junkyard and find a nice lady who isn't too beat up, you can wire the black-red to ground out when switched... then wire red to key-in, black to ground, and black white, and black to speaker. I think brn might need to be hot though, i wont know until I find a nice box. a look at the wiring schematic tells me that green from lady's box means lights out. if you get the wrong message, keep grounding the rest of the pigtail out until you squeeze that lady into saying what you want.

burned out O2 sensor heaters
Okimoto replied to Pop N Wood's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
yeah, I think a timer would be good for it. Maybe time it for 10 minutes in the morning or if you have some kind of choke system, you can tie it into that with a relay. -
I was out in the garage today... and I took a chisel to some rust bubbles on the doglegs for the very first time. After 3 layers of paint of different colors came off... I can say that the doglegs on the car have been replaced prior to my owning it, and have very little rust! I'm glad!

burned out O2 sensor heaters

check this relay, maybe it's stuck in the on position. Maybe you can set it on some kind of timer to go off after 9 minutes of driving? -
Hey, do you have a clean rear deck section on the car I can cut? I have beer signs for trade if you're interested. Or cash. Please email me at mkokimoto@gmail.com, thanks!
