Cant wait to see that. I dont know if im going to be doing a vg swap in mine any more, Ive been droolling at the though of throwing a 1uz in something, but the sheer size and having to tackle the exhaust might get me to through a na vg33e in there.
-
If your talking about swapping the diff to hold the power you dont need too, im pretty sure its a viscous r200
-
9 years ago I was 10 haha. I might throw a na vg30 in there at first.... but still run reverse pathfinder manifolds just to clear and just run 2 pipes in the bay to a y pipe. Thinking about just trying to do it before I get all the parts just to get it done.
-
If it doesnt fit Ill make it, lol. it is a huge transmission that why Im going to use it. Why do the swap if your going to throw a junk 5spd in there(I know the z32 one is the same) but the 71c and others just suck compared to a r30. The t5 isnt bad but I hear it doesnt hold a huge load of power, maybe it is better in a lighter chassis, you know, less load. If I do the swap I dont want drive line problems, pathfinder transmissions are easy to find so I figure if I get it to work good then If i brake one I can find another one for under 100 bucks compared to 300 from a z32. I am just throwing ideas around as I still have the l28et in the car and it hasnt even ran yet, if it runs then ill drive it for a while untill I have everything for the swap, like money for a custom driveshaft, hx40 turbo, stuff to make mounts and custom manifolds, a engine(I have a vg30 sitting around but I want it to be a vg33 or bigger, if your going to go, go all out right? I already have a vg38 in the works, that might be done in a few months if I can get this maxima fixed and sold). It should be a hell of a car. VGsomethingET hx40 r30 transmission, welded r200, 4bolt z31 turbo halfshafts, nistune. And I plan on running a maxima intake which has the TB on the front, it is my favorite, im trying to get my friend to sell me his 200sx vg30 intake, it is pretty small and is side mounted TB.
-
This is just a guess but. To front mount the turbo I don't think you would need to if you used 2 custom exhaust manifolds. But you might still have steering issues if you just used an extender pipe from the stock turbo manifold. Ive been thinking about using 2 nissan quest or 2 Pathfinder manifolds backwards for a front mount instead of doing fully custom manifolds.

26 1/2 inches from front of bell housing to shifter for pathfinder trans. 32inchs from front of bell housing to shifter on a 1987 z31 na 5spd trans. I am not going to be running a cross over pipe so i think ill be able to fit it far enough back.might just run no radio and have bent mustang style shifter haha. Oh and on my friends wrecked z31 I think im going to cut up the front right of the car to get the harness out in one piece. lot of good info on wiring a vg30 up here http://www.z31performance.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6182
-
What diff are you using? I have a 3.73open r200 Im going to be welding up(I have 4 turbo z31 halfshafts for it too). but the pathfinder trans has higher gears so I want to go with a 3.54 I have a arsenal of spare parts that im going to throw into my 280 eventuall the l28et I put in there isnt even running. it might not ever drive if I get money to put the VG in it. I love everything about these motors(EXCEPT the stock intake, if these came with the front tb maxima intake these engines would be perfect. I want my engine smack dab on the firewall, have to pull it out to work on it or do anything, thats usually what I do any way. I dont want to cut the fire wall, might have to move brake lines(you say) to get it to work. Ill adress that when i get there. and ill be notching the frame rail, Id rather go that route. but ill go get measurements. you using T5 or na trans, 71c?
-
is that as far back as you can make it? where is the shifter, is it as far back as it would be able to go without modifying the shifter hole? reasons I ask is because im going to be using a pathfinder transmission(2wd)(pathfinder driveshafts are huge), which are very short(ill get a measurement of the shifter placement on it and a t5. and I was planning on a maxima intake with the TB in the front and the engine basically right on the firewall, going to mount the turbo in front of the engine. and Cant you just notch the frame rail for the alt? How much of the Z31 harness did you take out? im trying to remove one at the moment and it seems that the only way to take out the engine harness is to cut it at some places, unless there is a easier way. im going to run my l28et off of a z31 ecu with a z31 maf, and dist. its all the same basicly. so im going to go ahead and have the wiring done. How does the power and torque in the s30 compared to a z31, because my z31 rolls out(a 8.89 in the 8th isnt bad for a mostly stockish 3200lbs car)
-
I use the little bracket that extends above the powersteering, and the little bracket on the driver head with the 2 holes in it, just run a bolt through the hole with it going through a chain. done it like that everytime I lift a vg out.

I will keep those rods in mind next time, I am sure they are easy to get too, huh?, but I want this to be kind of a budget build, kind of like my car, I dont know of anyone that is faster than my car for the money that i have met(I have like 300 bucks in actually increase hp parts, which would be nistune, mbc, and injectors. It is easy to make z31s go fast lol. I dont know how much the titan pistons will hold, I plan on building another 3.3 later one with more money. I am simply doing this because the titan pistons came out to be 98mm, and everything looks like it will work. I have 150 bucks in buying the motor, 80 in buying the pistons. That is 230 then + machine work. It should be sick for the amount of money I spend. I have a really nice crank out of a z31 and have a whole spare motor for the cams, dist, oil pump, everything needed. all I need now is custom headgaskets(found a place for that), normal rebuild vg30 parts, I still dont know the condition of the heads that were on it, the exhaust or intake has some rust in it from it being in the junkyard but it doesnt look bad, I took them off of the engine and put them on a shelf and havnt looked at them. I found a "good" machine shop after searching around for a while. But what all machine work would I need, I want to ask yall instead of a shop, I dont know if they would BS me and say balance everything or tell me not to balance anything... I trust people on here more. -boring+honing -resize the wrist pin holes -shave the sides of the rods to fit into the titan piston, if machine shops can do that. -balance what???? confused on the whole balancing thing. since the rods are being worked on I think they need to be balance, the pistons wont be machined so why balance them, if they are all from one engine? Any good sites or reads on engine balancing?
-
yea it was around christmas, I always have loads of candy around then, still have some on my desk, haha. But I havnt done anything with the pistons yet. I found a good machine shop but my clutch on my 300zx just went out, and my 1990 maximas auto went out, so I got a whole 5 speed swap(pulled it myself with the help of 2 friends at a junkyard), got it all for 81 bucks out of a 1992. So thats at the top of my list to get running so Ill have something to drive around. and gotta get a new clutch for my 300zx. but it looks like the titan pistons should work, wristpin hole resized to 1mm bigger, rods shaved on the size to fit into the piston and balance the rotating assembly then stock rebuild with titan rings and custom headgasket, found a guy to make one for 50 bucks with a bore of 98mm. what would that be in boring? 256 thousandths over?
-
I guess Ill go ahead and make a thread about my turdcutter. I got it for 75 bucks, and so far this project has costed me 300-400 including price of car. Specs of this race car -1978 l28e(hope it works) -1978 4spd manual -1981 turbo parts 90k milage on parts car I had(crushed it) -1985 300zx maf(not hooked up) -1983 turbo dist. -1985 turbo injectors, 260cc, with new fuel lines(obviously) -1983 starter, dont know if its original or reman, all i know i got it for 18 bucks from a JY -1981 oil pump and pan -still havnt installed the z31 wiring harness and turbo 85 ecu. -hacked up stock harness -everything else is stock Exterior -walmart spray paint!! I just sanded the surface rust and painted over it with black paint, and had fun with whatever red paint i found. -1981 mirror on driver side, dont know if im going to put it on both sides I like just one mirror. the s130 mirror does look out of place but I like it more than the s30 one. -everything else is stock inteior -just got some seats, didnt come with any. -no floor pans -no ignition, hanging push button(it was like this when I got it), I dont even know where I put the keys to this car. and it has no title LOL. but here in south carolina there are ways to get around that. Rust: it has bad floor pans, not much rust under the seat area but mainly where your legs go. suprisingly this is what I would say a 90% rust free car... the battery tray has surface rust and thats it. the fenders are good, the front valance is iffy, the rear suspension is rusty but not bad. the inside of the fender wells are good. im happy with it, and think i can manage that much rust. some surface rust on roof. but its strait. anyway here are pictars Got this seat for 20 bucks, Im picking up the other one soon!, I think it was a steal, needs to be washed. a intior shot, before I got the seat, after I get this running good im going to start on floor pans. The donor car(friends v8 project, he sold it a while back), its a 2+2 so that means I have the good flywheel and clutch. I put oil on the clutch so it wouldnt rust when I changed the oil pan, but it may slip now cuz of oil but if it does ill get a cheap ebay gripforce clutch... im trying to see how much of this car I can use used nissan parts . so far its going good. the 78 motor, and my 1990 maxima in the back ground, nissan ftw any way thats all for now, ill be starting the wiring and if it runs right ill try to make a right up.

s30 2+2 door panels compatible with 2 seaters?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Interior
eh i wont bother with them, thanks. without door panels its a race car -
found some really nice 2+2 door panels, would they work on my 2seater
-
I looked it up but the intrawebs are always right.... it says 1968 and newer have to have emissions in nevada... so id say you need a cat and a muffler, or just a cat and strait pipe. I had just a cat on a corolla I had and it was pretty quiet.

here are pics of the vg33 rod vs the vk56 rod. the wrist pin side of the vk56 rod is like narrower than the vg33 rod so I dont know if a engine place can machine that down to work. Because as they sit right now the vg33 rods will not fully go into the vk56 piston... take a look at teh jdm picTars. red lines is where it would need to be cut at, x being the material cut side obviously, paint brush ftw vk56 rod vg33 rod random picture of the vk56 piston 98mm vg33 compared to vk56 from left to right, titan, villager, 300zx

Thanks everyone!... I got a set of 8 off of ebay for 80 bucks from a truck with 2000 miles on it, and I believe it, these are in good condition. They are dished with 4 valve reliefs, and a shorter compression height so Im hoping it will come out to 7-8:1? And I think a stock t3 with be too small for a 3.8 liter, I was thinking a hx40 with custom manifolds and running 5-10psi. 5 to 10psi from a hx40 should be good LOL, huge turbo but im crazy and like used stuff.
-
Ok I have a set of Nissan Titan pistons(8 of them), My plan is to put 6 of them into a vg33 bored out to 98mm(which is what the stock titan pistons are, 98mm), on the stock vg33 rods with a vg30 crank, oil pump and oil pan. I beleive the compression height on the titan pistons are slightly shorter than the stock vg33 pistons. I cant find the site where I got that info from. I know the vk56 compression height is 31.something mm and the vg33 is just about that. But how do I find out what the exact compression ratio will be, I will be making a custom headgasket for this since its being bored out from a 91.5mm to 98mm. So if it will be to high with a stock thickness I believe I can make a thicker one. And another question The wrist pins on the vk56 are bigger than the vg33s too. the vg33s is 20.98, and the vk56 is 21.99. Can the rod be resized 1mm bigger, or will it make the rod too weak? this engine will only see probably 10psi of boost, the pistons are cast so I dont want to run too much boost through it, if it gets built.

na 5spd, I doubt its a 6spd LOL, maybe something is wrong with it, 5gears and reverse=6 I dont know? I know those are not z31s trannys. and the t5 looks nothing like those. datsun b210-b310 trannys?

Hood with later style zx scoops?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Joking about the hp thing , but I guess it could to a certain extent but im not worried about that, never thought about the brakes and stuff, I guess hot air would get trapped up in there. I just liked how they looked, and I think the stock hood needs something on it. It is so long. all this time I was searching for a picture of one with both scoops and I had one on my computer. I don't know whos car this is but found it on google a while back so, I think people with Zs don't care if you post their cars as long as you dont try to make money off of it or something.... anyway cool looking car so I saved it. -

scoops add HP from the cold air:-D -
Hood with later style zx scoops?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Cool, looks like it fits pretty good. I think I might try to make a template or something out of cardboard paper. my hood is all dented up any way so it doesn't matter if I mess up. nice car! -
cut stock engine harness still in car
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Ignition and Electrical
I amm pretty good at reading the fsm stuff. Its just all the fusable links and crap, Ill go ahead and get a harness from a 300zx. Thanks for the input. The altenator is on a separate harness though isnt it? I think on the 300zx the engine harness is by it self and connects to the ecu only... -
Hood with later style zx scoops?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Thanks but i dont think those are the ones. no not those, I think those were on the non turbos? these on a s30 hood I just found this on google, this is what i was talking about, but I want like a front shot with both scoops
