just a quick question the 4spd I just got has a lot of play in the shifter, are the bushings easy to replace? I have a 81 fsm I dont think it will tell me how, I havnt taken a super good look at it, it might be easy... how stiff will the shifter get? I know my t5 is pretty stiff. but any way is msa the only place to get them, it seems like good prices do I just need these 2 things Shift Lever End Bushing, 72-81 Z/ZX Non Turbo Shifter Pin Bushing, 72-81 Z/ZX Non Turbo http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/SDC02A video http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=32894986

My First Z! Lots of Pics!
Comrade_Charlie replied to Nick56289's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Yours looks better than my shell I just got, how much did you pay for it? I paid 75 bucks for mine, it needs floor pans, both doors need to be fixed, and has rust(nothing I think is all that bad, the worst of the rust is in the suspension componets in the back... im hoping I can swap stuff from my 81 that isnt rusted but I dont know. yours looks like a solid car. -
There are 2 Pathfinders at my junkyard, 1 is 4x4 and 1 is 2wd... I think im going to buy the 2wd one, even if I cant use it, It is only 45 bucks.

88 VLSD SS model- who all has one?
Comrade_Charlie replied to RB26powered74zcar's topic in Drivetrain
Yup that is a lot, that is why I dont like the vlsd diff for the 300s -
I have been hearing that the 2wd 5spd pathys have the z32 trannys(internally). Are there only certain years that have this trans or all 2wd vg30s/vg33 5spds? I think there is a 5spd 2wd pathy at my junkyard so just wanting to know if I should pick it up, should I pick anything else up, or will everything from my 85 work(starter, flywheel, clutch?). I searched but I couldnt really find any realy information on this.

I think my cousin showed me one that costed around 5k or more I dont remeber, I remeber it wasnt cheap.

Can I swap 81 floor pans to a 76?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I would guess the answer is no, I remebered msa sells floor pans and I figured that if they were seperated by year, that would mean that they are indeed different. But I remeber looking in the 76 and I think the seat mounts are different(Ill check tomorrow, I remeber how the 76 went but not the 81). So if the seat mounts are different then msa would have 2 different kits. I really dont know without having the two cars together but im crushing one to get the other, so I think the best idea is just to cut the floor pans out of the 81 since they are rust free. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/SBC1B10A And then this site talks about 240z's, 280z's and 280zx's(but says 75-78). eh ill just cut them out. http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/240z.html -
280zx Donor Picked Up Today!!
Comrade_Charlie replied to 260Z Guy's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Yea the comp is 8.3 for na pistons and 7.4 for turbo pistons. My Z31 has 7.8 and ive done as much as 16psi(usually 12-15psi) without any problems for over a year, but thats a z31, so I dont know if L28 pistons are any better or not. the L28 pistons are not forged, rods are. Why supercharger? I like supercharged v8s but not a big fan of superchaged imports. to each his own I guess. -
I know the 81 and 76 bodys are different but are the floor pans the same, I tell people I have a 76 with rusty floor pans and I have a 81, and they say cant you just take the 81 floor pans, I dont know, the 76 is at my budys house so I cant measure it. are there any difference in floor pans(I dont care about see mounting, im replacing those.

getting a 76, crushing a 81
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
That sucks man, I couldnt ever see my self crushing my 85, after all the crap ive fixed on it, if I total it ill leave it in my back yard. only reason I got the 81 was for turbo parts got it for 100 hoping to get that or more money back from crushing it, to buy the 76 so its getting crushed for a good cause, and im sure Ford needs more metal to try to make more cars to try to beat Nissan. -
I have a 81 turbo car I got for the motor and what not. I have all wiring and all engine trans parts... what else should I take off of the 81 before I crush it, what is an upgrade to a 76 280z from a 81 280zxt I think im going to keep the diff from the 81(doesnt have haft shafts but I have 300zxt halfshafts), any suspension parts or just anything I should keep? crushing it soon to get the money to buy the 76 280z from a friend. the 76, getting for 100 bucks, does that sound fair? no engine, no seats, no trans, has driveshaft, has rust but not bad in my opinion, floor pans are worst, I was thinking 50 bucks. the 81

V8 swap in a super clean 72?
Comrade_Charlie replied to XCYTER's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
You could always do a l28et swap and keep it looking clean and it will look stock and clean under the hood. unless your stuck on a v8(vh45 ) it may be worth more down the road but if you want it and have it for a long time, why not have a clean v8 Z. unless you were looking for a beater project car. -

ok cool, im getting a 76 soon(for my l28et), I have set of 85 turbo halfshafts. is your diff welded? or some kind of different lsd so you have this? http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_45&products_id=46 ive heard of people breaking halfshafts on the z31 forums, maybe its just because some are old I dont know. the N/A shafts I believe are weaker, that may be it. im using 89 turbo halfshafts. I see your in Columbia, have you been to midland dragstrip, its overpriced and looks like a really old strip, I went once and ran a 8.89 in the 8th, some blue 240z was there running a 8.9 with a 350sbc, just wondering if you know him. or if you've been there. im near charlotte. -

Comrade_Charlie replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
what is the difference between the stub and cv axles. Im pretty sure the older Zs used the axles where you bolt it to the diff, and bolt it to the wheel, unlike my 89 clsd when it has a input shaft and bolts to the hub? -
is the input thing the same, im a z31 man, every z31 trans uses different size crap... (I think its the yoke?) any way sry for taking thread off topic, I need to weigh my 300zx
-
cool, thanks. the 5spd im getting might be broken, and I only have a driveshaft for a 4spd, I dont have a 4spd trans but my friend that does dirttrack does.
-
This thread is awesome thanks, im getting a 76 280z shell for my l28et I have and was scared they weigh a ton more than the 240z, I think it was because more eltronics and wiring were introduced, and tad bit longer, I know when I pulled all the wiring and I mean all from the car it must weigh 50lbs(and some eltronics). If I use a 4spd(with the 4spd driveshaft) vs a 5spd(with the 5spd shaft) will the 4spd be lighter?

what is needed(wiring harnes). l28swap
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
Also just some pictures, when I got the 280 I was told it had a "slight rod knock" LOL check out the pictures. I think one or two of the other rods are bent also, its a 100,000 mile motor by the way too. I still have not gotten that piston and rod out because it needs to be cut out, I cant bend it back or push it through the bottom. I am getting another motor(one that runs) and a 5spd tranny(and other parts like a altenator and bracket) from a friend for 100 bucks, he is putting a v8 in a 280z. The l28 and all its glory the messed up crank The 280 was never much to look at, but I consider it a steal for 100 bucks as it was close to me, my cousin towed it and it has one of the smoothest spinning turbos I have ever felt.(only parts missing were the alt. parts and the ecu. and the afm was broken) All the wiring is sitting in the floor board of the corolla. The Rolla -
I finally got the wiring harness out of my 81 280zxT and im wondering what off of the harness I need to keep and what I can cut off... im putting a l28et in an old Toyota Corolla(only way toyotas are fast right!!lol) or attempt to, I have nothing better to do with my time and have the parts and services like a fabricating shop my cousin works at and my school, but any way. I figure I need all the fuse junk, all the relays, the harness from the ecu to engine(injectors, afm, o2 sensor(planning on swapping to a z31 ecu seeing as how Z31s is all I used to work on I have 3 turbo z31 ecus and wiring harness and dizzys for them)(but my harness is a 81 so I need a 82-83 zxt dizzy so keep that in mind) I read something sometime ago about needing something to do with the fuel pump and the car wouldnt run. The corolla was carburated so I figure I can just rig a external walbro fuel pump up. I didnt take any of the wiring from the passenger seat back(so all the fuel pump wiring is still in the car should I take that out before junking the car?) Im going to run a 5spd trans so I dont think there is any wiring there. I figured I dont need any wiring that is under the dash(except for fuses and ecu stuff).

L6 Engine Crane Connection Points
Comrade_Charlie replied to jojothemonkey's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
I used a head bolt... the head was off of the engine... -
grounds? my cousin couldnt start his 300zx because some ground on the tranny was disconnected, just an idea. I dont know about the altenator doesnt seem like it would matter.

L6 Engine Crane Connection Points
Comrade_Charlie replied to jojothemonkey's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
I just hook chains up to good size bolts on both ends of the motor, I know on my 300s engine there are hook hole things... but when I pulled a l6 and the auto transout of my 81turbo, I just found some bolts and put the chains on them... -
is there a link to a list of what years and what cars came with what blacks and heads like a 81 came with ? head and ? block, the search isnt working "The HybridZ database has encountered a problem." Im getting a 82 280 turbo im just trying to find out what it has...

Can a l28et fit in 30" lengthwise?
Comrade_Charlie replied to Comrade_Charlie's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
Well I went to the junkyard finaly its all the way on the other side of town... they have 3 or 4, the l28 I guess is roughly 30-31" long by 20" wide by 23" tall. these dimensions are just eyeballed because of lines and stuff, I checked and double checked though I didnt think it was going to be 30" I measured my cousind mustang inline 6 which is bigger than a 3 liter it was like 27 or so... the main thing that adds like 2 inches is the fan pulley, I think if it was cut down the engine would be 27-28 inches long from the block where the trans mounts to, to the end of the pulley, I guess its the water pump... I think it is highly do'able, and should keep me busy for a long while..... thanks for yalls replys
