As far as cost of stroking the 3.5 or 3.7 there is always the truck 4.0 VQ. Sure the guys at crower would tell you to run there kit, but I think the truck crank is worth looking into.

There is a 280z on Athens Ga craigslist with full C4 suspension for cheap. I would buy that before I ever considered fabbing it myself. Just a heads up.

I have an n47 with a fresh valve job, and a p79 with a fresh deck (didn't need a valve job) that was shaved .008. You can have either one for $100 plus shipping.

You can get a subie 3.7 lsd. Remember the r160 is actually stronger than a z car r180. If you look around you'll find 510 guys and subie guys putting a fair amount of power through the 160's (400+rwhp). Look here and on ozdat.com, there is alot of info about the 160 swap, I'm not too sure about the svx stuff though. Good Luck!

Welcome to Hybridz! You will find this site very informative, and its members very helpfull, as long as you do your own research. It sounds to me like you are looking for a "best" for the money drag car modifcation list. Around here there is no "best", there is; however, a TON of information on drag racing l28et's both here and on the search engine of your choice. Check Bernard's posts. He has a really quick 280zx auto car.

I doubt Garrett can beat the $2200 price tag with all the accesories included.

It is just from memory, I have shipped 3 complete power setups; rack, crossmember, pump, lines, and pulley, in addition to one non power setup. I may be confusing the power rack figures with that of the recuiculating ball system (that thing is heavy), but it is definitly more than 10lbs. Hell, theres probably 3 lbs of fluid in there.

Go to a junk yard and look around the euro section. You will see many Saabs, BMW, Mercedes with SETRAB oil coolers. They are usually around $10-$15 and they are great pieces. IMHO much better than that $100 flimsy fin generic crap. By the time you get it mounted and run your oil line you should save a couple bucks and have a much better heat exchanger that is way more durable. Just my .02

Yes, it is about a 40lb weight difference. And for those that don't think 40lbs is a lot; remember, the majority of that weight is hanging off the front of the engine!

I've always been a hot rod guy. Prior to my zx I'd been around way more chevys, mopars, fords then any import. Of course upon purchase of the first z the plan was to swap in the old 30k mile seasoned small block that was in the garage. Since it was my daily driver it saw alot of road miles before the swap came to fruition, and with that comes maintenence. As I worked on and tuned the car (intake, exhaust, ignition, AFM) I realized that she had alot of character with that little engine in there. It wasn't long after I first pulled the valve cover to adjust those darn lifters that I sent that 350 packin'. So I guess it grew on me.

No offense, and its totally off topic, but if one spent $2800 on the rotating assembly and $900 on heads in an effort to make n/a power he is doing it all wrong. As for the 400hp 400ci for $1000 is quite do able if one is resourcefull enough. If you are not very resourcefull just spend 4 or 5 times the money on a crate motor with a warranty. Thats what I would do.

Look into the z33 r200. Its a shortnose and I don't know about the axle flanges, but most of them have 3.36's and a VLSD. They usually go for $300-$400. Not the simplest solution but may be better that scouring for years.

Love it! Its a functional origonal option. "that horrific oval hole" would remove more weight to compensate for the addition of the scoop, and would probably move more air/heat as well. I would install it as designed.
